I took a health check for life insurance and my count was 17 They checked for liver spleen and so on. I wonder if this could be from Rheumatoid arthritis I have been positive but alway dormant or mononucleosis as a teenager. I am 54 now and very curious.

Hi there, I am going through similar sypmtoms. I had a Dr. appointment last week and was told this week my WBC was high, and that they want me to come in for more test, as he feels I have an infection somewhere. He told me that I shouldn't be so nauseous, but I am, all the time. Did you get any answers to this?

My husband has a high white blood count and has seen our GP who seemed like he was not so concered. He finaly sent him to a Onacolgist and has had all the test for cancer. But they came back negative. His runs between 17-23 thousand. He sleeps all of the time and is very moody. It has been this way since last year at this time. He feels sick all of the time lately. He has another appointment in 10 days. Don't feel like you are the only ones out there. There are more of you than you think.

Hopefully i can offer some reassurance to people here.
A high WBC count is simply down to an infection of some kind the large majority of the time. Having a cold or the flu or as someone mentioned above, a bladder infection, will all cause your WBC to rise. However if your WBC count is high and you havent had an infection recently then there can be other reasons.
Certain medications can cause a rise in WBC, as can severe stress or a recent injury of some kind.
In the worst case scenario it could be a leukaemia.
If it is an acute leukaemia then you could expect to be suffering anaemia symptoms aswell (lethargy, pallor and shortness of breath). Also a tendency to bleed would be another bad sign caused by thrombocytopenia. Symptoms of this would be small cuts bleeding for a long time, tendency to bruising and bleeding gums.
Chrnoic leukaemias present similarly but if the leukaemia is lymphocytic then you could get swelling in the neck, armpits and groin.
I must stress that leukaemias are unlikely, particularly if you are below 40.
A simple differential white count and blood smear with a competent haematologist behind the microscope should give a diagnosis as they would be able to see a proliferation of mature WBC in chronic leukaemias aswell as a proliferation of immature blast cells in acute leukaemias.
As i say, a high WBC count is almost always down to infection, and you shouldnt be worrying about leukaemias unless you are suffering from the range of other symptoms and are in the right incidence categories.
Let the doctors and lab workers get on with their jobs and im sure they will sort you all out :-D

In September I started feeling very tired at first and then the fevers, chills, and a horrible headache started. It was the worst I'd ever felt. I was never at a normal temp, if I didn't have a fever, I would have the chills and shake uncontrollably. I also started having a pain kind of under my ribs, below my sternum.
I finally went to the doctor and she had no idea what was going on since I didn't have a sore throat and I wasn't vomiting. So I had a strep and mano test as well as other blood tests. My white blood count ended up being 26,000 and I also found out that I am anemic. My doctor was very concerned and told me to stay home and not go to work or school (I am a college student). She also prescribed me the "Z pack" and told me to come back in a week to see if anything changed. The next time I went back my WBC was down to 13,000 and the following week it was back to a normal level and I finally started to feel like myself again. My doctor was relieved that I was better and said she was worried about me for awhile. I still get very tired, but I think that's from my anemia and I'm taking vitamins for that.
I still don't know exactly what was going on with me, but I hope it never happens again. I missed 2 weeks of school and work and basically slept for 2 weeks straight.
While I was sick I searched on the internet to see what I could have and, as many of you, I was worried about leukemia since I had many symptoms (fever, chills, night-sweats, headaches, sensitive/bleeding gums when I would brush my teeth, etc). I turned out to be ok, but I can understand why many of you are concerned. It is reassuring to know so many others have been through the same thing.

Actually - I'm familiar with that pain on the left side - its usually associated with problems in the large intestine - my got really bad and turned out to be ulcerative colitis but there are also other disorders that can cause that pain without any significant change in bathroom habits. I had a long time lingering infection in there.

I have had high white cell count for 2 years it now appears that this may be caused by an inner ear problem. funny symptons, feeling like you are drunk, can not stand bright light, do not like being in shops or in crownds, get a woozy feeling, but look perfectly fine. Hope this helps l have had years of frustration, being told it is panic attacks, depression, ect.

I went to my dermatologist few weeks ago for my skin had this unbearable itching, tingling sensation after exposure to cold temperature. He gave me a blood test to see if I am allergic to any foods, but instead, he found out I had very high WBC. So I went to my PCP and did a more detailed blood test, and the result freightened me more. The WBC actually became higher. My PCP decided to send me to a Hematologist who is also specialized in Oncology. Again, the doctor drew my blood and sent them for more tests. I am so worried about the result, and I won't know the answer till next week. Just hope nothing serious is going to happen to me.

What ended up happening? I'm having a high blood count - pain that can't be identified and itchy skin on my upper chest.

i went to the hospital as well a few weeks ago with severe abdominal pains, after 6 hours they determined my WBC was doubling every time. after a few days, they let me go with no explanation. a few weeks later i went to see yet another doc. (4) they also tested my blood got a call back that my WBC count was extremely high. With that they told me to come in and have more test done in 4 days. They must not be to worried about it to let me wait 4 days? So at any rate i think the flu seems to get worse every year and this year being the worst thus far, the CDC is starting to run out of options to combat the problems.

well i've been sick for sometime now.. probably around a year!.. i'm 17 a very healthy girl, active all that. Well for the past year i've had HORRIBLE migraines, i mean like crippling, I've laid in bed for the past 3 weeks with them. I'm tired all the time, i dont feel like getting out of bed & everythings worse when I sit up. I've had every blood test out there, thyroid iron levels all that.. I have a b12 deficincy and have to get shots. So my levels are now normal. I've had CT scans and MRI's .. they show up with bilateral hyperintensities..which just shows my brain is stressed from the headaches. I sleep about 20 hours a day, i'm really confused alot, and just not myself. I had blood work done in december & my white blood cell count was through the roof & i was even doing better health wise at this point. My doctor never said nething abotu it to me. So i had a test done to see if i had a PFO in my heart, and i have a little one, nothing major tho. I just had a spinal tap, which came back normal & now he wants to look further into the blood thing. I have all symptoms for lukemia and i'm not very enthused. I'm pretty scared. I go back monday for more tests.. any ideas of what could be wrong? please help!

This sounds a lot like the symptoms I was having when I lost my daughter at 7 months pregnancy. They never diagnosed it in me, but my husband got the exact same thing 2 months later and he was diagnosed with Mono. He got worse and I had to take him to a hospital which was closer to our home, than where he had gone when he was diagnosed. Well..I told them that this is what he had, but OF COURSE, they had to take their own tests and said that it was not Mono. Well...They didn't tell me until after several days in the hospital and numerous tests that they did on him...that it WAS Mono. Hmm..How's that possible?? Well...they didn't let me in on their little secret 2 DAY TEST which is much more accurate on diagnosing Mono.
I thought I was dying...I had determined that I had one illness, then thought it was another. I was like that with terrible pain, chills, night sweats, migraines, nausea, dizziness, high fever, bone pain (like with the flu)...and on top of all these symptoms, my husband also had pain in the upper left side of his abdomen. Well...the spleen does enlarge with Mono and would very likely cause pain when it does.

Hi,

My wife has a WBC count of 26 and I was curious as to what the "Z Pack" was that your doctor prescribed. Thanks, Stan

This sounds a lot like what I had. I had no symptoms, however, just pain in my left leg and a high WBC (White blood cell count). I was given a whole battery of tests, including a CAT scan for enlarged spleen and other organs. They found I was fine inside, but usually the elevated WBC is indicative of CLL, which I found I have through one of the blood tests they gave me. Thank goodness this kind of disease has a very slow growth (about 12 years on average, though some people go to 30 years with it). The disease itself doesn't kill you, but the elevated WBC is not good if you get something else, makes it hard to cure.
