I've used chapstick brand chapstick all my life and then after about 6 months of not using chapstick brand ( i was using burts bees) I switched back to chapstick and had apparently developed this allergy too. My lips started to burn at first and feel really dry so I continued to apply the chapstick thinking that it would remediate it, the next morning I woke up and my lips were enormous with tiny red dots all over and I stupidly kept using the chapstick figuring I had eaten something bad and was developing an allergic reaction. I was right that it was an allergic reaction but didn't think it could be to my chapstick until my roommate suggested it (I was in college at the time). I finally decided to go to health services when the bumps spread around my mouth and started oozing. The pain was also intolerable at this point, I had ice packs on my pace constantly, they burned and stung like crazy. Health services didn't think it could be an allergy to chapstick and just gave me some benedryl and sent me on my way and told me to be careful and watch what I ate to see if I developed a reaction again. I thought it was the chapstick and discontinued the use strictly sticking to vaseline. When I went home my little sister decided it would be hysterical to apply chapstick on my lips during the night and watch and see what would happen. Surely enough the rash occurred on my lips again and that was enough to entirely convince me that I was allergic to chapstick. My doctor recommended putting hydrocortisone on to relieve the pain and remove the bumps and also took several antihistamine pills a day. The hydrocortisone worked wonders and rather than having the rash last a week it only lasted another 24-36 hours after first applying it.
I WOULD DEFINITELY RECOMMEND ANYONE WITH THIS ALLERGY TO USE HYDROCORTISONE. It really helps all the symptoms, but also take an antihistamine to relieve the swelling and tylenol if it's as painful as mine.
The worst part about all of this is that if a guy is wearing chapstick and I kiss him, I will always start getting an allergic reaction and my boyfriend loves chapstick brand chapstick, inconvenient huh?

Well I know that we're officially bumping a dead thread, but for anyone else searching for sunscreen and lip reactions, I found out that I also have what's called photo sensitivity.  When the sun hits me while wearing a certain type of product I get that rash, while applying the product itself may not cause me an instant reaction. I'm allergic to most sunscreens and chapsticks.  The only kind of lip gloss I can use has to be spf free and come in a squeeze tube.  Oh and good ole vaseline.  You can even get cherry flavor.

I am allergic to chapstick as well. Actually, to all kinds of lip balm or lip gloss. The first time I used chapstick, I got the bumps and it was itchy and tingling. I have tried so many many many kinds of lip gloss, lip balm and lipstick but I still get the allergic reaction. Even with toothpastes. I can only use regular colgate toothpaste. If I use the ones with mints on it, I get the bumps and the itchyness. I haven't asked my doctor about it yet. Maybe I should get an allergy test done to figure out what is causing these allergic reactions.

You should stop using chapstick!! If it's the chapstick causing this problem to continue then stop using it.

This happened to me with the Blistex Lip Medex brand which was supposed to help with my cracked lips. It only made things much worse and resulting in a large amount of swelling and blisters. I wouldn't recommend this product AT ALL!!

I had a problem similar to this when I started using Chapstick Naturals.  The corners of my lips and the center of my bottom lip split and my bottom lip was swollen and had bumps on it. I thought it was just a change of weather so I started using crazy amounts of vaseline on them and it eventually went away.

After a while I started using chapstick naturals on my lips again and the same thing happened again.  I saw the doctor this time because I was worried that it could be something else.  The doctor basically told me that it was an allergic reaction and she gave me some cortisone to put on it.  She also told me not to use anything with menthol (blistex, carmex, softlips, anything minty)...she even threw away the tube of chapstick I had on me.  After I got rid of the lip balms and just stuck to vasline and cortisone my lips healed completely.

Now I only use petroleum based lip products.  They're a bit messier than the solid chapstick that I used before but KIEHL'S and HEMPS both make petroleum based lip balms in the little squeeze tubes so there's a lot less mess.  The reaction I had only seemed to be from the chapstick naturals so I do occasionally use other solid types of chapsticks when I don't have a petroleum one on hand, but I find that the petroleum based ones work so much better and my lips don't feel dry when I'm not constantly re-applying it.

**Medicated lip balms like blistex and carmex use ingredients to exfoliate your lips and get rid of excess skin but they also dry out your lips.  Like with dry skin on your face, exfoliation is not a good idea! Get your natural moisture barrier back and you will have healthy lips**

I have the same problems I try to stop mines from swelling so I put Vaseline . That's when I get the itchy and burning around the lips. I really hate this because I can only use Vaseline on my lips if I don't they will swell like they did for the very first time. That was when I was in 8th Grade . I am in 12th now and I currently have this problem going on as I write this. I wish it was something that can be done to help people with this certain kind of condition.

Same thing happened to my mom. She used blistex regularly and must have developed an allergy to it. She began using pure lanolin on her lips and hasn't had a single problem with swelling or the burning red line above her top lip or below her bottom. I believe she just orders the pure lanolin Lip balm on amazon.

Burts bees is actually pretty good. It is all natural......but everyones lips are different. But try burts bees and then eos. But if your going to use eos lip balm, I would suggest to only use the spearmint (its kinda teal) and it tingles when you put it on like burts bees. But I would say u should try them if you think you might like them.

This is an old remedy and free get 5 or 6 spoons put them in the freezer for about an hour take one out put it on the cold sore remove when your able to pull it without it tugging on your lips repeat until all six spoons are used , one to two days tops its gone works every time.

I have this EXACT situation!! I find that I am allergic to chemical sunscreens in products. Other sunscreen ingredients, such as zinc and titanium dioxide, seem to be fine.
