I just got a peppermint chapstick last week. It cause my lips to burn and dry really badly. The cherry chapstick does not have this effect. My lips stay moist and soft. There should be a warning label on it.
bought lip balm at sugar factory in vegas.my lips kept swelling 5 x normal size finally figured out it is balm it is octinoxate7.5% andoxybenzone 4.5%
I discovered that SPF-15 in any lip balm can result in a reaction for me. I can't use anything with the SPF ingredient or kiss anyone with it on their lips because I get bumps, slight swelling, dryness then peeling around the outside of my lips. The higher the SPF level the worse it is for me. Once on vacation I put SPF-30 on my daughter so that we could go to the beach and inadvertently got some on my lip. OMG, my lips swelled 3x their normal size; the pain from the stretching of my lips was awful w/numbness and tingling. I had to take a Benadryl and it still took 2 days to go down. I now use Blistex lip ointment, ONLY.
I had the extreme burning but none of the rest. I just today forgot how it felt last time and used that chapstick. It was some kind I got in a convention registration packet the cheap stuff I figure but it had never happened b4 then
I can't use the cherry camex with spf it breaks me out
Same for me. Think lypsyl is the problem even though I can't remember not using it and I'm 57 now!! Started to clear and dry up by just persevering with cleaning with tap water, then popped some lypsyl on and up it came again. Found a blog recommending calendula 10%. This had a very promising impact immediately. Skin felt almost normal as soon as I applied it. Better hydration is eucerin aquaphor or intensive urea". Google both for further info. I sympathise with all you guys. Thousands of us suffering!! No guarantees with either recommendations but neither made it worse so figure it can't hurt other than your pockets.
When i use peppermint lip balm (burts bees) and it does burn but not too bad and nothing happens?
I have had similar experience. I wonder whether it is the the oxygenzone or octinoxate that is in them. I find that Burts Bees (Vit E and peppermint) is ok. Using vaseline type products inthe sun may encourage sun burn on your lips.
I exactly had the same situation before and now, because of using chapstick. It happened to me twice.
What confused me is that, I was using chapstick before during my college years, but it was fine and okay. But now, it had a very different effect.
The first one,
I stopped from using chapstick and use a different brand. And then, when i returned back to chapstick, my lip swollen, just exactly like yours. It even develop small pus on the corner of my lip (maybe because of the cold ckmpressni made). My lip is like burnt, swollen and pouting, as if there's burnt plastic on my lip. It even had wound because i cannot stretch my lips.
I went to the dermatologist and he gave me topical ointment (i forgot the name, but she told me not to apply it liberally because it has steroids in it). It had a positive effect, 2days after using it, the as if burnt lip started to dry and eventually peeled off revealing a new beautiful skin. As if it was baby's lip. Since then i never used chapstick again but maybelline instead. (It makes me sad because during my college years, i really loved chapstick because i had a pink thin natural lips with it)
The second one,(the most recent one)
Since i really wanted to go back to chapstick again, despite the fear that the former may haplen again, i decided to try chapstick again (strawberry flavor). Unfortunately, the effect was instant. I felt my thick thicker, as if i spread grease and oil on my lips. Overnight, my lip swell again. It started to have red line then eventually turned hard as if burnt. It cracked due to dryness. I cannot smile wide because it will cracke and bleed,This time it has no pus, because i read that it has to remain dry so it will dry up and heal. I avoid licking it but instead dry it always. I put a herbal toothpaste in it, and let it sip overnight. And now it dried up. To this verh moment, i managed to peel it the skin off. I used cotton buds to lightly peel the dead skin. Now its fine. I am just waiting for the upper lip to dry up and will do the same.
I dont know what happened to chapstick that it gives such reaction. It was fine before. :(
I was thinking that its just an adjustment period for lips that it first peel the dead skin and after revealing new skin, will stop from giving such gross result. But i was too afraid to try again.
You saved me!!! Thank you for sharing how to cure your lips after an allergic reaction. I tried the mango sunrise Chapstick for the first time and I had a really bad reaction to it. The top layer of my lips burned off, my lips were super red and swollen, and hurt very bad. After I tried your suggestion, my lips have made almost a complete recovery and it's only been a few days, so thank you!!
I've decided that I'm allergic to Chapstick brand lip balm. When I use I get this itchy tiny bumps on my lips. Then my lips will swell up a bit. The best thing for me seems to be aquaphor!! After using it for 3 days I could already feel the bumps going away. I've been trying other kinds to find a common link, but no luck yet!
My husband used Chapstick hydration lock as it was all I could find at the store. His upper lip swelled after about two days and then the lower lip also swelled and both lips are sore. Needless to say we are not using it anymore even though the old Chapstick, the common one with the black and white label was one we used normally. But that one was not available - all I saw at the store was all these flavored ones and the one mentioned above. Apparently something in it is giving him an allergic reaction.
Wow I have had this problem for years with my lips! It turns out after many dr appts and years of research my lips cannot have anything on them that contains sunscreen. even a tiny amount and my lips get really bad. I make sure no sunscreen go on my lips and they are fine. I don't even use sunscreen on my face in the summer. i use zinc oxide
When I was really little I used the same old Chapstick as I had always used before bed. I woke my parents up an hour later because my lips were so swollen and painful. After much experimenting we found that I am allergic to sunblock on my lips. Dr. Dan's Cortibalm is the greatest thing to ever come into my life and has made my lips much healthier.
I forgot my chapstick at home one day so I went the whole school day without any when my lips were chapped. So when I got home my lips were burning pretty bad. When I applied the chapstick they got really puffy and swollen. It only happens when they are really chapped though, not when they are just a little dry. Any answers?
