I have this same exact problem. My boyfriend gets mad and goes into the living room to sleep. I have done this for as long as i can remember. And i know its my tougue it sticks the roof of my mouth then clicks on the way down. Has anyone found anything that works? I am in desperate need of something to work.

I used honey to coat my throat.  It worked for a few hours.  Enough to finaly get some sleep.  I also plan on getting a humidifier.

I click too. I think it is coming from my soft palate. I've heard it a few times when I'm almost asleep. My husband says I do it all the time when I'm asleep. Very strange! I do have allergies.

My husband makes this clicking noise.  It drives me crazy.  I got ear plugs and it helps some, but I really don't like the feel of them.

I am curious, if those of you who click are open mouth sleepers?  My husband is and I wondered if this was part of it.

I'm a mouth sleeper, too, but when I'm awake, laying down with a closes mouth, I still hear it.

I read elsewhere that a nasal spray and/or neti pot will work. I'll have to try.

Here's my question... I didn't seem to have this problem until I gained weight (same with excess snoring). Anybody else expirencing this also have a weight problem?

Im currently 7 months pregnant and this started a few weeks ago... it is driving me crazy. Between my allergies and my swollen nasal passages ive gone from the perfect nose sleeper to a clicky beast. It used to only be my right side but now my left side and back do it. I (obviously) have Gaines weight, bur don't know if that is to blame, or the swollen sinuses also due to pregnancy. So irritating. Ive also been told by my husbands that last week was the first time (minus colds) that he caught my snoring.
It is your throat sticking together, and it unsticks when you breathe out. If you take pressure off your neck it will go away.

Hi

I do the clicking thing due to mucous. The mucous actually comes from the nose. It is called post-nasal drip and is best treated with a steroid nasal spray such as beconase. Use the spray every 12 hours and don't let up.

Hope this helps

Finalorbit - do you ever fall asleep in inappropriate places? Do you ever wake with a morning headache? If the answer to either of these is yes, please google Epworth Sleepiness Score

My boyfriend does the same thing and I have been trying to figure out why he does it, not how to stop it. I feel it will be easier to prevent once I know why he does it. Personally I feel as if it has something to do with being breast fed as an infant and he reverts to it as a comfort mechanism.
I also feel as if maybe his sinus's play a part in it... since he does have allergy and or breathing problems. That's the only other rational explanation I find..

I have had this problem for years. It is so frustrating and my husband has times of total stress out about it. I have been to the doctor, had my nose cleared in the hope that I would be able to breath through my nose only at night, but most recently I have used a mouth guard which works some of the time...I think. It is still not perfect. Sometimes we have to have sleep holidays and sleep separate for awhile. Not the best solution to the problem but we both catch up on sleep for awhile.

Same problem. For most of my life I was a SILENT sleeper. It used to freak people out. As I got older, this problem popped up. Happened at the same time I started snoring, grinding teeth, and gaining weight. I notice the clicking as I'm falling asleep, and my wife doesn't even hear it. Night guard ($500 for teeth grinding from the dentist) helps, but not all the time. Happens more when I'm stressed out and tired or dehydrated (or had a couple drinks) with dry mouth. Drinking water helps, as do pretty much every kind of snoring aid. The click only happens on exhale, I'm definitely sure it's my soft palate, it started when I hit 15 lbs. over my ideal BMI, and has been getting worse the more weight I put on and the less water I drink. I guess I'll update when I finally lose that 30 lbs. that l bet everybody who has this problem talks about losing. Oh, smoking and lack of exercise also make it significantly worse as well.

My boyfriend also does this in his sleep. His mouth does not move, he does not have a cold or allergies that we are aware of. He says that he does grind his teeth, but to me it sounds like his tongue being suctioned to the roof of his mouth and then the clicking comes when he lets go. We were going to buy a mouth guard, but were afraid of TMJ. I doubt now that he has TMJ as he is not in any pain. He is not even aware that he does it, except when I wake him up for keeping me awake. I think we may try the mouth guard to see if that works.

I woke up to find myself clicking. As soon as I lifted my head an inch it stopped. If some of your mucus/post nasal drip theories are true, apple cider vinegar will cure it. I occasionally take a spoonful before bed if I feel congested or icky in anyway. The next morning I am completely cure. Take a spoon or capful before bed in hot water (you can add honey) or apple juice it should be the remedy. I guess I will treat the clicking with that method as well. Good luck!

My son started making this clicking sound about 2 months ago but he is also complaining about pain where the jaw line meets.  Every doctor says he's too young to have TMJ.   He is at the 95% with his weight.  Nothing shows up on any scans and the ENT doctor says he can't find anything medically wrong.  Puzzled about what to do next for him.
