I found this thread quite by accident while I was looking for what could cause a 2 week period. At the bottom of the list was 'some steroids'. When I researched the specific drug Kenalog, prolonged menstruation came up as an additional side effect for women. I also found a medical journal who had researched the unexpected side effect by asking 77 women who had had cortisone injections if they experienced menstrual disturbances. 39 of them had (Just over 50%!!!!!)

It seems that those least affected were those who were currently on birth control. A definite correlation with hormones.

I began my period a couple of days after having a shoulder injection of Kenalog. My period has been very light and has conitinued for 2 weeks, sometimes acting as if it does not know whether it is starting or stopping. Color is back and forth between brown and red.

I have an appointment with my regular doctor but will go in armed with printouts from the med journals and drug side effects websites.

I'v had keloids from three ear-piercings gone bad for years, I was so relieved when I heard that cortisone injections could fix my problem ..fast forward to today -three months down the line & 6 shots later; I'm on day 17 of my period, and really thanking God for all of you who'v writn about your experiences. The doctor's assistant totally rubbished my claim -that my abnormal period was a side-effect of my last shot, I thought I was dying of some unknown disease because I had a full check up and they couln't find anthing wrong with me! May God bless all you ladies & shame on all those doctors who give people cortisone shots without disclosing all it's side-effects.

Day 29!! of period after having a shot 33 days ago and another one 12 days ago.  OMG! Had no idea this would happen.  NO ONE said ANYTHING about it.  I have a doc apt tomorrow and was going to have her do something about my "perimenopause" but now I know that it's the shots. :P this stinks ... and they didn't even do any good!!  and mine isn't light spotting either.  It's non-stop regular with bouts of heavy and clots and oops I just peed myself oh no I didn't yuck! I have to take a shower.  It's disgusting.  I haven't been this bad since I got food poisoning!!  OMG! Okay, totally off topic but NEVER get your period and food poisoning at the same time... it just isn't pretty!! LOL

I had a Arthoroscopy nearly two weeks ago , a few days later i started spotting , was worried to death as last year I had a bit of a fright and it made me ill , I thought i was dying. I am post menapausal now for five years and last year started to bleed heavy , had to undergo the scans and the painful biopsy , while having no sedative lucky for me everything was normal but when this bleeding started again albeit spotting I went straight to the GP. she examined me and said it was nothing to do with my injection she had never heard of it and is refering me again to the Womens Hospital to undergo everything again .

I found this site and was so relieved ,to see the stories on here. today ive been back to the orthapedics to have my stitches out and mentioned it and he said he had never heard of it and there is no connection so how do you go about proving that there is a connection where do we get the proof ladies?

I rang the womens hospital and i explained my concerns to them they put me through to the lady that did the biopsy examination and she had never heard of it either. This is a well known  Women and baby hospital in Manchester ,The nurse said its better to come on the two week urgent referral just to be on the safe side .

I know she is right but just wished i had some back up and proof of the side affects of the steroid injection i had . Very frustrating but thank god i found this site .

I had a cortisone injection in my lower back about 10 years ago and my period started early and it took a few cycles for it to sort itself out. About 3 weeks ago I had a cortisone injection into my shoulder and my period came early and I've also been bleeding for 7 days now and I normally bleed for around 4 or 5 days. The bleeding isn't heavy but it's just persistent. As I've experienced this before I'm not unduly alarmed and I did anticipate it would happen again. It's just annoying that the doctors don't pre-warn you. I was only offered an explanation when I phoned the doctors after the first injection years ago to be told that it was indeed a side effect.

Glad to find this thread! I too had a steriod shot to get rid of stress related hives. The shot was administered on the second day of my menstrual cycle. I am normally like clock work, every 28 to 30 days and only normally lasts 3-4 days... I am now on day 14. Glad to see that it is common.

Really glad that I found this thread.  I had a steroid shot 6 days ago for my shoulder and was prescribed steroid packet to take.  My period are ALWAYS normal.  Every 28 days or so and last about 4 to 5 days.  I had just ended my period, had the shot and starting taking the oral steroids.  5 days later I had another period.  So far it is only lasted 2 days, but I was kinda freaking out because that it is a abnormal l for me.  Glad to know that there are others.  Wish the doctor would've told me the side effects.  He didn't say anything, just gave me the shot and sent me on my way.   :'(

Hi! I had the same experience? did it resolve on its own? I have an appointment to see my doc on Thursday but I was thinking of just letting it resolve on its own.

Hi, how long did it take before you started having your regular periods again?

I've spoken to my doctor and physio since the injection and I have been told that it will take a couple of months for my cycle to return to normal. I posted on this forum about a month ago and I'm finding my period is just starting to sort itself out now and that's been just about 2 months now since the injection. I was bleeding for 6 or 7 days and then my period would stop for 3-4 days and then start again. It will sort itself out but you just need to let it run its course. Bit of a nuisance but hey-ho.

So I am reading alot about people having prolonged heavy periods but here is my story and wondering if anyone has had this problem. I Received 5 (yes, 5) Steroid shots two months ago. I received them just shortly after I had gotten my period. I have had this issue before with previous steroid shots. - I don't get a period at all for a few months after getting the shots. Then when I finally do get a period it is the goliath of all periods, very heavy, with clotting and lasting for DAYS....I am almost at my two week mark as of now. Just wondering if anyone else experiences this type of reaction to the steroids.

My irregular period was from a kenalog shot on my keloid scar on May 1st. Since then i had a period starting may 7th for 10 days, stopped for 5 days and started again and is still going on up to the present day.My dermatologist said i will have an irregular period for 2 cycles but she also said that every patient is different.I was not informed of this side effect when she gave me a shot of intralesional kenalog 10. I would prefer a concealed keloid scar on my chest to a never ending vaginal bleeding that i am experiencing now plus breast tenderness and cramps. I do not know how long i can stand this. If i go to my primary doctor i am sure she will give me birth control pills or have me undergo a gazillion tests.when will this stop?

I have had the same experience as some of you.  I have very regular periods that come like clockwork (only made more regular by BC) and have only missed two.  The first one was after I took a two week course of Prednisone orally a few years ago.  Pregnancy tests were negative and my period picked right up the next month.  This past month I have received three separate steroid injections in my knees and I have missed my current period (was due to start Monday).  I've taken three pregnancy tests over the last week and they're all negative.  The only connection I see is the steroids.  I didn't think it was as likely this time since it was a local injection, but after reading other peoples' reactions to injections I'm convinced that's the cause.  Oral steroids have a warning in the Rx packet that it interfers with birth control pills, but I didn't receive any warning from my GI doctor the first time or my orthopedic doctor this time.  Thankful for this thread.
