Given that there is a correlation with SD and yeast/fungal growth on the skin, I'm wondering how many of you were prescribed oral antibiotics prior to going on Roaccutane?

I firmly believe that the use of antibiotics as a first course of treatment for acne and the subsequent damage that they cause to the gut flora is the root cause of a whole raft of other skin conditions like SD and rosacea etc.

I'm speaking from first hand experience as I've got pretty much every recalcitrant skin condition one could hope for and I was on antibiotics from about 14 to 20 and didn't go on Roaccutance until I was 30. I still think it's one of the best things I ever did and don't blame it for the other issues I experience, I seriously think it's to do with antibiotics.

Both my husband and brother took Accutane in their youth and both now have SD. My husband’s SD is so severe that it affects his entire face and scalp. He has several topicals creams, ointments and prescription shampoo that helps but none actually clear the SD completely. His SD is caused by an overgrowth of yeast which (as women know) is usually kept under control by the good bacteria. I, too, suspect Accutane use is the cause of this long-term effect because my other brother who also had acne, but never took Accutane, does not have SD. Additionally my sister-in-law (husband’s wife) had severe acne in her youth was unable to take Accutane and does not have SD today. Seems a bit too coincidental to me.

Terrible advice. Do not listen to this.

I am 23 years old, and I also took accutane when I was 18, and developed SD on my scalp and ears immediately after stopping the treatment. What is saddening me more than the itching and flaking, is the colossal hair loss. My friends are trying to be kind about it, but they all seem a bit worried, and keep suggesting I see a doctor (which I of course have many times by now)... I have lost OVER half of my hair, and the treatment I am receiving in the country I am living in is not helping a lot so far. The doctor said there is no correlation between any medication and SD, but I have read too many accounts online about similar stories to fully believe it. I just wanted to share my experience to the suggestion that accutane and SD might be correlated.

I had cystic acne on my chest and back and some acne on my face from when I was about 17 to 25. It really wasn’t that bad in retrospect although it did leave some scarring on my chest. I took accutane at 25 for 6 months. It cleared my acne but it dried me out a lot. Shortly after I stopped taking accutane I noticed my scalp was extremely itchy. My scalp had always been perfectly healthy prior to accutane. I’m 41 now and I still have dandruff. Doctors say it’s mild seb derm and it’s from oil but my hair and scalp are very dry still. I highly regret taking accutane. I also have dry mouth which has caused gum recession and dry lips still that I need to treat every day. I also have calloused heels that I have to constantly scrape and moisturize. I think the accutane damaged my oil glands and changed the composition of my sebum. I actually miss the acne at this point compared to being itchy for years. Acne is just your skins reaction to oil and it wasn’t worth damaging my oil glands long term.
