I've come to this forum time and time again looking for an answer to my lower left side and back pain from drinking alcohol. I had the pains for just over a month, and I went back and forth to the ER multiple times because of it.
They told me they didn't think it was anything on one visit, it was muscle on another, and on the third or fourth visit they referred me to a gastroenteroligist because after reviewing a CT scan they said the rectal part of my intestines was inflamed(This was AFTER they took a fecal sample, and if you're not used to something going in that way, I would assume it would be slightly inflamed.)
I went crazy trying to figure out what was wrong with me, and I thought it was something related to my intestines because of the way the pain felt. It was kind of an inside feeling to the pain, nothing like a muscle pain. It felt like something was inside me rotting, or dying slowly, or as if there was something there that shouldn't be, if that makes any sense. I did go through stages of pain though. Some days were more bearable than others. Most of the time it was more a weird discomfort than others. I never took pain killers because I was afraid if I took them, I wouldn't notice when something went wrong because the pain was numbed. Also, if It had something to do with my organs, I didn't want to eat a pain pill and make it worse.
I did have blood in my stool once, but I'm starting to believe that that was self inflicted from trying to go to the bathroom. I say this because immediately after, I went to the ER and the doctor said that if I was bleeding, it stopped, so it could have been from straining, or something to that effect.
As for the poster above me, my side effects are more along the lines of number 2.
I don't get the pain right away, it takes a good while for it to creep up after drinking alcohol. The first time, I drunk a bud light 23oz, and the pain came for about 3 days and damn near dissappeared. The second time, I drunk a bud light 23oz and it lasted for a month (until now.)

Now for what you all have been waiting for, the cure!
This going sound really dumb, but what I did was force myself to drink water ALL DAY.
The docters couldn't find anything wrong, and they said that it sounded just like a kidney stone, so to drink lots of water.
ITS NOT A STONE FOLKS, so don't worry about that.
What it could be though, is chronic dehydration.
See, when you short supply your body water(and you can do this without realizing it, because you won't necessarily feel thirsty, as is my case)
and you drink alcohol, it dries you out even more. Now, when you finish that drink, and let say you drink a glass of water or two before the next day(and some people don't even do this, because they dont FEEL thirsty)
or if you are drinking sodas and c**p like that, you're not getting enough water. I have come to the conclusion(and I'm no doctor, so I could be wrong) that my kidneys and such, or my stomach lining, or whatever, wasn't getting enough water to stay moisterized.
I could have also had some grit buildup(small deposits of calcium like stones, but much smaller) in my kidneys or in the pipes that lead to my p*ss hole(not big on anatomy.)
I do know that your kidneys start in the middle of your back on the left and right sides, so if you feel pain from there on down, it could be kidney related.
Bottom line though, I don't think I was getting enough water.
Now, I can't stress how dumb this would have sounded to me before I tried it, as I don't drink ANY Drink except water, cranberry juice, tea, lemonade and alcohol!
To make it sound more dumb, since the pain(over a month ago) started, I dropped alcohol all together and ONLY drank water!
Still, I guess I didn't do enough to flush my system or something.
So, I drank about 4-5 gallons of water or more that day, and I swear I p*ssed about a good 20-25 times. What I did do, was keep my kidneys working. Once I p*ssed, I went and drank another glass of water. I was so suprised that my body took all that water in! You would think that you wouldn't possibly be able to take another sip, but I did. I took my last glass right after using the restroom before I went to bed, and awakened to a pain free back folks!!!! Well, it hurt just a small little bit, but I think that actually is muscle related, due to me sleeping on a futon.
Trust me folks, try this, and let me know what happens the next day.
I know how you all feel, as I have no insurance, and I was wondering if I had cancer and the whole nine.
Honestly, I still don't really know what was wrong, but I know the water(and God) helped me through it a WHOLE lot.
Wish you all the best. Any questions

I just got these pains today after about 3 days of heavy drinking cheap vodka.
I did 115 days sober, and 96 of those days were in rehab. I'm an alcoholic, tomorrow I'm going to the hospital, and my drinking career is now over. I don't want to die.

Hey, no need to go in to details since it sounds like everyone else here knows what I'm talking about. I get the sideaches too. This is with alcohol, as has been discussed. But I ALSO will get the sideaches with carbonated water, soda, and energy drinks- energy drinks being a big one. More likely when I DON'T drink it quickly, like more often when I drink it over an hour span and also when I don't exercise or something after it. Does anyone else have the same thing happen?

I am 24, and I have had this problem for many years. It is incredibly painful. Tums do not work, any medications like Zantac do not work. I found a few alcohols I could drink and didn't cause the reaction, but now those I can't even drink. I would like to mention that I hardly ever drink. Maybe 3 or 4 times a year, and I usually get pain about 1 drink in. Its incredibly annoying, what the hell is causing this.

I have absolutely the same problem when I drink. My back hurts so bad that it takes my breath away. I am 27 and have been drinking for 7 years. I have only been experiencing this problem for about 2 years. I thought it was probably due to stress. I have also been to the doctor and all they tell me to do is stretch. I want some better answers

I've been a beer drinker for many years. Just recently I've experienced the same problem, Really bad lower back pain after drinking. Mine is mainly on the right side, sometimes shooting to the left and into my hips and pelvic area. It starts after a night of drinking and last 2-3 days. I keep thinking it's my kidneys and so I drink lots of water after drinking but the pain is still there. I have been diagnosed with gastritis(swelling of the stomach lining) I think it's time to give up the drinking to see if I still experience the pain....if I still experience the pain I will see the doctor cause then I will know it is something possibly serious. I'm glad I found this site cause I couldn't find anything else relating alcohol to my back pain. Now at least I know I ain't crazy.

I have lower back pain and a dull aching pain in the upper buttocks after heavy drinking the previous day. My doc doesn't have an answer to this but ruled out a kidney issue since they are much higher up on the body and I have no symptoms of kidney problems.

I've come to the conclusion that although the problem presents itself after heavy drinking, it is a back strain problem rather than an alcohol problem. I believe alcohol simply adds another negative factor (dehydration) that pushes things over the threshold. I suspect that if my lower back were in better shape the alcohol would no longer present a problem.

I first suspected this after noticing that the problem seemed much worse after laying on my bed for awhile. My bed is quite firm but if I switch to a different bed with a softer mattress the pain would subside. I also noticed that I get pain if I lean over the sink while brushing my teeth. (this is known to put a strain on the lower back.)

I believe The lower back muscles have become weak over time and there are a number of contributing factors such as sleeping on my back (which I always do and this is very bad) and too much time sitting and leaning over which stresses the lower back.

I read some great tips about lower back health that caution about sleeping on your back and sitting with bad posture. They say that most back pain comes from muscle weakness and I suspect that this is where many on this blog should focus their attention.

Here is one of their suggestions: "Lie on your stomach, then bend your arms, placing your hands flat on the floor directly under your shoulders. Slowly raise your torso onto your elbows for ten seconds, lower your body and repeat. This movement forces nutrients and oxygen into the disks of the lower spine and forces out waste products like lactic acid".

hi there
I too experience this pain after I drink... been feeling that for about 1-2 years.
Last weekend ( 5 days ago ) a went on a bender for ca. 3 days, drinking beer. Two days before that I had a mix of some cocaine and speed and I noticed the day after I was very sore like swollen (maybe from dehidration?) in my rectum, and had very dark urine for about two days.
As I said, two days later (friday, and on going over the weekend) I drank a lot of beer, all too sundaynight. On monday I was really sick in my stomach, had ache in my lover tummy area (and lower back, slightly up to the middle (both sides)) and a bad diarrhea (yellowish at first but in the end it was just clear as water). The next day I was very woozy and low energy... and still am (weak later) but my fecies are just a bit harder now... and the urine has got brighter in color but I've been urinating less frequently per day this week than usuall...
The thing that bothers me most though, is that when I drink ANYTHING at all now (water, cola etc), I get a slight pain on the right side of my back, stretching to the front, for up to 5 min maybe... I don't know...

Thinking about seeing the DR. (and maybe a urologist) after the weekend to check my blood (and urine) for something (and tell him about my last two weeks)

My problem has never been this bad, and this was the only site I found someone with the same experience... read a comment here who told to drink ALOT of water for a day, gonna try that - never been really thirsty for water :-)

I'll write if something comes out of that...
Thank'yall

I'm not a doctor but I had the same issue being described here. The back pain was being caused by muscle and nerve irritation due to a vitamin deficiency brought about by alcohol consumption. I was also standing improperly by over arching my back which contributed to the problem. Here is the cure: For each 130lbs of body weight you will need to consume 3mg of Thiamin, 3.4mg Riboflavin, 40mg Niacin, 4mg B6, and 20mg of Pantothenic acid. These doses represent 200% of the RDA per 130lb of body weight. Ideally you will want to take these with water 2 hours before drinking. As an additional benefit you should notice reduced hangover symptoms. Also, if your belt droops down in front when standing you are over arching which causes stress on your lower back.

Maybe it would if it were due to kidney issues. It may be good to have a ct scan.

Hate to go against the grain here but I find my back pain is only under control when I am drinking.

@eviltwin: How can you diagnose Hodgins lymphoma based on one non-specific symptom. DONT LISTEN TO THIS GUY!!!!!!! He is the kind of virus that sends everyone to the emergency room for nothing. Occams razor: The simplest explanation is most likely the correct one. In this case my bet would be on GERD and muscle pain from over consumption of a muscle relaxer (alcohol) Unless you have enlarged lymphnodes, night sweats and weightloss I would not go to the doctor. Just cut down on the drinking instead.

Good luck.

Best,

Anders

I had this problem a week ago. Turns out that it was a kidney stone. Not caused by the alcohol directly, but it did occur after an evening out.
