it is your kidneys doing their job. Be careful not to overwork them as I'm sure you don't want them to pack their bags.

It is due to swelling of the large intestine. Alcohol causes a toxicity reaction to the large intestine which inflames it to the point where it places pressure on the surrounding muscles, the result is lower back pain which can become almost intolerable, usually a week off the alcohol (or a month or more for high daily usage) and it will subside. Ignoring the pain and continually drinking may lead to further problems such as extreme diarrhoea (to the point where you only pass liquid water).

Basically once the back pain starts, stop the alcohol for awhile if you can, and let your intestines recover and repair themselves.

I went to hospital with extreme back pain symptoms along with extremely bad diarrhoea, their tests showed it was due to alcohol toxicity in the large intestine, I was also dangerously dehydrated, the large intestine is where all water is absorbed in the body, so when it gets to this stage and beyond, the damage to the large intestine renders the body unable to uptake water which can lead to extreme dehydration if alcohol use is not stopped for a period of time.

In my case, I had lost 10kg body weight attributed to water loss, I was placed on a drip to bring my fluid levels back to normal.

Strong back pain, and passing water as stool are major warning signs that your large intestine is not coping with your alcohol intake.

Cigarettes also contain Acetaldehyde, the metabolite of ethanol when it enters the liver, smoking a cigarette when you are experiencing alcohol induced back pain can actually increase your pain as the chemical passes through the body.

Hope this helps

PUJ obstruction. Look up the symptoms and see if this matches. If you can get to a nefrologist/urologist they will notice immeadiately that something is wrong with the kidney/ureter (unlike other doctors that say everything looks good) when using an ultrasound. Most likely a CT scan will follow to confirm, because the fix is surgery and no one wants to cut you open without knowing for sure. Just diagnosed with this today. I had the pains since I was 9 and got them from something as simple as drinking too much water to soda to energy drinks to a single shot of alcohol.

My girlfriend is having a severe problem with this, I think maybe she's allergic? I don't know but even if she only drinks the slightest bit of alcohol her entire back well tense up and start hurting like hell. She can't sit still, she can't lay down, she can hardly breathe and if she sits at all she clutches her sides and rocks back and forth. This whole process only lasts for about 15 minutes before it wears off. She just experienced it now so I gave her a bottle of water and she downed the bottle, as a result of downing the entire bottle of water it helped speed the process up and the pain subsided in about 10 minutes (five minutes less then it normally takes). I have no clue what causes this but if anybody ever finds an answer, please let me know I would love to know what it is as I can't stand watching her in pain that intense. She want's to be able to enjoy herself as anybody does but if drinking causes her this kind of pain she doesn't want anything to do with it.

For me it's usually my middle and upper back and it doesn't take much alcohol to really knock me on my ass in pain. It's why I don't drink anymore. It didn't used to happen, and I've never been a heavy drinker- in fact I pretty much stopped drinking for a year. First time I drank after that the pain had me in near tears. I didn't make the connection until after I drank a few more times over the next year. So yea, pain can happen from alcohol use.

please let me know if you figured out what was causing this. i have had this problem for over a year now. i have had every test done possible. MRIx2, CT, Ultrasound, bone scan, colon test, you name it! NO luck! i have also been to the ER twice for this. I cannot live with the pain anymore. I always told them it was a lot worse with alcohol but the doctors said it was something wrong with my muscles so i continued to drink. Please help!

ok, I too have this problem. First came on after a day out where I drank 2 pints of normal strength beer. That episode lasted about a month and was treated with codeine for pain. Since then, even a small amount of alcohol caused the pain, so I stopped drinking. That was nov 09, in about may, I found I could drink again so started drinking regularly, not massive amounts, just a beer with dinner or a glass of wine etc. Then met some friends for the weekend, drank a lot and the pain came back really bad, never really gone away. Now for the interesting bit...

As many have said before, "I'm not a doctor", However I am a paramedic with a lot of education and experience in acute medicine.

So, Kidney pain is generally a sharp griping pain that will come and go. It is often described as a horrific pain, worse than childbirth. Often there is associated sickness/shaking/high temp etc. This is usually a result of kidney stones, urinary tract infection, Pylonephritis (infection of the upper urinary tract) or generalised kidney infection. The main thing with kidney problems is you will usually experience urological symptoms with the pain. Either less urine, strong smelling, dark coloured urine, urine with a pinky hue to it (blood in urine) or full on bleeding (usually small amount). All of these conditions (except stones, thats a different kettle of fish) can be treated with antibiotics and drinking plenty of water. Most doctors stick to these conditions as "kidney probes" as they are really common, and can be a lot worse than you'd expect. UTI's and pylonephritis is more common in women, however when men get these infections it is usually worse as they don't experience the symptoms until the infection is more established.

Generally speaking, the only reference you will find to "dull kidney pain/ache" is kidney cancer, which is rare. However, there are other options. Cysts can grow on the kidney causing a dull gripping pain. usually diagnosed by ultrasound, also there is anecdotal evidence of people suffering from inflammation of ureters form alcohol consumption, which could cause a dull ache in the kidney.

All this is very good, but why do i always get pain in my left kidney and not my right?

So, ultrasound and blod tests rule out infection, cancer, cysts, inflammation and report that kidney function is excellent. But, my spleen is 14cm (normally a spleen doesn't exceed 10cm) it is on the left side and swelling could put pressure on stomach (causing a full feeling/loss of appetite) or the kidney, perhaps causing the pain?

So the doctors all got excited that it was probably hodgkins lymphoma, but bloods came back fine and my lymphnodes are not swollen.

Currently waiting for haematology to 100% rule out hodgkins but it seems unlikely.

I'm sorry that other people feel this pain, but at the same time i'm glad its not just me!

Most people are a little dehydrated, and that certainly will help, but don't go crazy drinking gallons, you can upset your electrolyte balance and cause all sorts of problems doing that!

watch for the urological symptoms and keep on at the dr, there must be an answer for this!

I've had mid to lower back pains since august of this year. It first started after I had got a new car and I had went on a party binge for about 5 days straight. I remember waking up to a terrible ache coming from my mid back that was very irritating and would go away after a day or so. The pain hasnt went away since august and now its november. I had an appt with my doc last week and i had an ultrasound. All of the results ruled out a kidney infection and she said that my kidneys and organs are working just fine. I had went out this past weekend and had a couple of drinks n the pain still persists. I do think that it is related to alcohol and i use to drink energy drinks n would have the same results. I plan to stop drinking for at least a month to help my kidneys repair and hopefully this will solve the problem along with some over-the-counter medicines.

I myself, have this problem. I'm not a big drinker, and never have been. I'm nineteen, and the pain started about six months ago. After at least three drinks or to the point of being 'tipsy', the lower part of my back would start aching. The pain would get very intense, but went away as soon as I sobered up.

I have looked at alot of different websites. There are many different opinions on this subject, but what has personally helped me;

Hydrate. I found that drinking alot of water/cordial/juice in the day before I started drinking helped so much. I had no aches or pains whatsoever and was free to enjoy me evening. I have since tested this theory many times. It worked. Every single time.

So my advice to you, have a cheeky glass of coke or something when your out. Just a few. Keep hydrated. The pain won't surface.

This also may help a few of you -

I have recently been surgery after 3-4 years of back pain on the right side after drinking. The pain would without fail come on after a night out, start at the back right side then move round to the front and last for up to a few days. After originally being diagnosed by GP as kidney stones a renal specialist (after describing relation with alcohol n pain) diagnosed it as a classic PUJ obstruction.
It is a narrowing of the Ureter going out of the kidney and you are born with it, many people do not realise they have it until later on in life i.e drinking.

This may not apply to all of you but looking at some of the posts but I once trailed these forums looking for an answer as well so hopefully may shed some light on a solution.
