My personal methadone taper suggestions/writeup
I was on 10yrs at 140mg and I tapered slow over a few years long story short, towards the end I got down to 40mg an got off in 3.5months. Plz read all info below before clicking links.
NOTE I'M NOT A DR AND I'M NOT GIVING MEDICAL ADVICE. THIS IS JUST WHAT I DID PERSONALLY AND PEOPLE I HAVE MET ALONG THE WAY.
I didn't take a single opiate or benzo to do this and here is how. This is IN MY OPINION the best protocol for making tapering easier! I will include resources.
Never taper fast or jump off! Never drop more than 10% of your current dose at a time. A good rate overall is usually 1 to 5mg every 2 weeks. Usually it takes us 1 to 2 weeks to adjust to a drop depending on how big. Read more at bottom.
1- Have blood work done regularly by private dr for the following:
Thyroid levels/antibodies: long term opiate use is shown to affect the thyroid known as opiate induced endocrinopathy. Thyroid controls so many systems. Opioid-induced endocrinopathy is one of the most common yet least often diagnosed consequences of prolonged opioid therapy.
All vitamin levels for deficiency like d3, b, b12, k magnesium, Potassium and more. Many long term patients are usually severely depleted on these and can cause pain, anxiety, leg pain, bone pain, back pain, insomnia, constipation and more.
2- switch to a healthy diet, no fatty stuff, no high sugars, no fried stuff, no sodas or junk food. Eating all these causes low metabolism and causes us to stay backed up and not break stuff down properly. Digestion is important esp with good health. Also we need to up our intake of fresh veggies and fruit to boost immune health and help your body feel better. Lean white meat or fish is best meat.
Drink tons of water. I recommend a high ph water or at least good spring water. Water labeled Drinking water is usually acidic and causes stomach issues.
3- exercise and get sunlight, keep you body moving and sweat and workout when you can. Ridding your body of toxins and fat is always good
4- Epsom salt baths at night. Helps with leg cramps and pains but also is good source of magnesium for bone health.
5- good quality cbd oil has been shown to help a lot with pain, anxiety, depression and overall good immune health. Good quality oil is legal and won't make you high. I recommend finding a full spectrum with at least 25mg per dose rating. I use charlotte's web plus. Don't waste money on cheap stuff at vape shops or adult stores. Usually there very low grade and contain no real cbd. I couldn't have slept or got by without cbd oil in many of my beginning days. I sleep like a rock now and my anxiety is gone. I still take cbd 4 to 8 drops of cw plus and a 30ml bottle last me a few months.
6- ibuprofen and Naproxen and Tylenol can be used in moderation but try not to rely on them daily. They can cause gi issues like acid reflux and gastritis.
7- clonodine can be used in moderation also gabapentin if absolutely needed. I did it without it.

Keep your mind and body clean and tapering is much easier. Your body is going under more stress now and is relying on a lot of diff systems and diff systems are learning to cope without methadone so it's important to supplement and repair their functions and be sure all levels are good. That's the best things I recommend to anyone tapering or not. I'm not a dr and it's not medical advice just my personal experience and have helped a ton of others with the same thing. There's a huge correlation with people on methadone and opiates for a while that have all these issues and many confuse them with withdrawals and a lot of times it's just not the methadone causing it. Tapering works and can be as easy as you make it! A Lot of times it's our minds making us think it's worse than it is. Also most people don't know about their health nor care esp if you were on opiates or methadone a long time like I was. Join good support groups, stay away from anyone who uses and any places and people you used with. Getting clean and staying clean is easy if you put in the work and stay healthy and do it right. If you get impatient and jump off or try this without being healthy your chances of staying clean and pain free are slim.
I will be updating this and adding stuff to it so keep a check on this thread. If you have any questions please pm me or reach out. I'm glad to help.

i would love to hear about these things that can help me get off the methadone without withdrawal. I am tapering now but am trying to conceive. I am 37 and my boyfriend is 32. He has no children and I have 2 so he wants one of his own. I dont want to wait the 6 months it will take me to taper off completely. I go down 2 mg every week and so does he. I am currently on 46 mg and he is on 26 mg. We have been trying to get pregnant for 2 months now. I realize my age affects my chances too but we really want this. He is planning on quitting cold turkey once he gets a little lower.

My husband was on methadone for quite a few years but has been off of it for 2.5 years. Could he have problems being fertile?? We are trying to get pregnant with no luck but I also was diagnosed with PCOS. Anything will help!

Hi, my boyfriend has went from 80 mgs of methadone a day down to 40 but now back to 80 mgs . He had been on it for 10 years. He says he is fertile but I don't believe he is, I've been on 80 mgs for one year. I think I may even be having problems with fertility. What do you think? Do we have to get off methadone to get pregnant? He said he will never get off it. He is 45 and I'm 28. So I'm worried we will never have a baby. I have 2 from previous relationships. So I know I'm able to have them, he said he had gotten a girl pregnant I think two actually but they didn't keep it. Not his choice, but my biggest question is. Will we have to quit methadone to conceive? Thanks

Long-term use of methadone can cause a loss of libido and significantly lower the desire for intercourse in both, men and women. In medical studies, menstrual cycle irregularities, erectile dysfunction and sperm damage have been noted. So, methadone abuse can not only lower your interest in sexual activities, but can also harm your fertility. It is a fact that methadone helps addicts stay clean and live a drug-free life. But, when it comes to libido, fertility, conception, pregnancy and breastfeeding, it’s best to listen to the doctor’s guidelines, thus risks will be minimized. If you have any further questions or concerns feel free to ask us by posting your questions in the comments section below.
