im in mma doing wrestling boxing and grappling but im a 5'2 15yr old and ive been lifting weights for about a year and i have packed some muscle. i need to get taller but stronger but i cant do both because everyone is saying that lifting makes you shorter. so does it really stunt your growth?

no that is not true you can weight lift but it will not affect you if you lift the right amount of weight. Lift weights that you are confortable lifting dont lift weights that you cant do cuz if you do then it will affect you and remember to allways have an adult with you at all times when your weight lifting.

Ok well could someone tell me if this will affect my growth. I am 13. Currently 5"2. I'm short mainly cuz my growth spurt hasn't started yet. I do workout but it's only with 20 pound dumbbells. I don't want to go to serious until 18-19. I'm confused because I don't do such a serious workout but I don't want it to affect my height. Also my dad is 6"1. So can I still make it to 6"0 or close if I workout with basic routine. Could someone please help me out. Thanks:D

Yes i have seen many of the people i know who started doing weight lifting in a very young age and they are not any taller.I think the reason behind it is that when you lift the weight up it will stop growing height.

Ok. They're r pple that r short cuz they workout but that could be in genes. Cuz then again Shaquille Oneal started in early teens n now he's 7"0. Even if he was 6"8 when he was in teens the whole myth is that u completely stop growing n he still grew 2". So I'm just gonna workout n see cuz I grow about 4 inches every year so if I'm not growin then I'll just stop

Um, maybe you have genes for tall, and he has genes for short?

Just saying :P

A lot of people think that lifting weights stunts your growth height. It is so widely accepted as true, because it seems like a perfectly plausible explanation. If stretching and other limb lengthening exercises help increase your height, any pressure applied the other way should decrease it, right?

Well, not quite! The body really doesn't work that way. Your body will grow as much as it was supposed to (depending on your genetics), irrespective of the exercise. Sure, you can push your body a bit with some limb lengthening exercises, but there is no evidence that weight lifting routines stunt your growth. So, don't fret! But when your bones are growing, they are a little soft, so it is not advisable to put undue pressure on them. But, doing regular weight lifting exercises will not affect their growth. It is essential exercise, but do so in moderation till your bones are over with their growth stage. And being a beginner to a weight lifting workout, it is always advisable that you work out with the correct technique and perfect form, so make sure you have a reliable trainer to teach you the right way. Powerlifting workouts, on the other hand, may be bad for teens. Remember the formula: Take as much weight, as you can do at least 10 reps with.

Its true it is definitely a myth, I started weight lifting at the age of 14, back when i was 5,5 now i'm 16, 5 10.5, and still growing. This stunt your growth thing is a myth, you could stunt your growth if you do your exercises wrong and end up hurting yourself, but don't worry workout as much as you want, and if your really worried about this myth, then wait until your 17-18 and start lifting from then on, 90% of people stop growing at 18, but you could be growing up till 25.
