I am considering this Diet and I too have 140 pounds to lose. What was the average amount spent plus maintenance.

I've been doing this diet for a couple of weeks and frankly am really happy with the results. In 2 weeks I've lost almost 10lbs and I only have 30 to lose, so wow 1/3rd there! For those who want the scoop, I'll give it to you. For the first 5 weeks you're going to pay about $700 - that includes injections 3xs a week, buying their vitamins (no markup $16 a bottle plus potassium/calcium for another $16) And that's about a 4 week supply. It's expensive, but there is value. You see a doctor every few weeks and you get weighed 3xs a week where a nurse reviews your diet sheet and makes sure your'e following the program. If you cheat and don't write stuff down, they will question your diet sheet because they test your pee for Ketosis (basically fat in your urine). If no ketosis then you're probably cheating. Truth - You will be hungry. I mean hungry. I work in an office with muffins kicking around and it's hard not to take a tiny piece. If you cheat, you will not lose as much. However as the weight falls off you are so thrilled you don't want to kill the momentum.... I was so excited after 9 days to box up pants and shirts that were already too big! So fun to try on all my clothes and see a difference every day....keeps me embracing the hunger:) The diet might vary depending on your weight when you start, but for me, I'm allowed 2 servings of lean protein (about 6 egg whites and 3.5 oz of chicken breast) 2 serving of carbs ( 1 serving is 1/2 a peice of multigrain bread - so I get etiher a few crackers or one piece of bread) 2 servings of fruit - so an apple and an orange, and up to 16oz of veggies (i can never eat that many). What I do along side my diet sheet (yes you write it all down) is I track what I eat in my app (I use Lose it, others may have my fitness pal). For me logging in the app is good because I'll keep doing that when I stop going to the clinic (best way for you to stay on track, keep logging your weight and understanding why you might be gaining). So that I make sure I don't exceed 1200to 1500 calories a day to maintain my weight. IF I gain 5lbs, I would make sure I cleaned up my diet and knocked off some calories so 5 doesn't turn into 30. NEVER STOP WEIGHING YOURSELF and always lose the 5 if you gain it. I was a bit disappointed when I read people saying they don't teach you how to eat. The diet is pretty clear. No added fat, pretty much 0 sugar other than what's in your fruit and keep the white flour and carbs down. Eat a ton of vegetables. Eat Fruit. Get your protein - lean protien. I agree with some of the comments on the fact that some deli meat and processed cheese and crackers is allowed as well as aspartim. I agree that those are not healthy choices, but the diet says to limit those to 2ce per week. I think you have to have them so people can sometimes feel indulged. for me a piece of processed cheese with a slice of ham and a couple of egg whites once in a while has been a godsend. I also use up my carbs with Cheddar breton bites. I am allowed 7 in teh afternoon and I eat 7 in the evening as my TV time snack. Thin people don't eat deep fried mars bars and fast food. They watch their sugar intake, they eat until they are satisfied, not full and they generally skip over the fish and chips and if they go to Mcdonalds they order a cheeseburger and a diet coke, not a Big Mac, Large Fries and Large Orange drink. 300 calories versus 1000 If you are going to pay to lose this weight, it's a huge commitment. You don't really have a life because eating out is hard and if you do, If you go out, you're ordering greens, no dressing and 1/4 of a chicken breast and hope they didnt cook it in oil. But it's doable. Try to eat a bit before going to a party and bring your own snacks. As far as your life when you're done, you have to continue to follow the basic principles. Cut out the sugar. Be careful of what you order in restaurants. Don't fry your food. Eat fresh fruit and veggies everyday. I can preach this because I lost 30lbs when i was 20 and kept it off for 17 years until i had my daughter. now that she's six I'm sick of still having those extra 30lbs i put back on. I know exactly why I gained 30lbs and it was because I slacked off. Started bringing back some bad habits.... eating the junk in the office. Too busy to hit the gym... popcorn every night... treats for me when I bought treats for my daughter... let's not even talk about the chocolate binges at easter halloween or christmas. I know once i hit my goal, i'll probably shell out some money for a couple of weeks of maintenance becuase my bod has been eating so few calories for so long, i'm concerned it will hang on to what I eat so I need to slowly re-increase the calorie intake. My plan is to continue to eat the Bernstein recommended foods but in larger portions as I won't need the deficit.... and maybe a cheat or 2 every week (not everyday). Good luck in your journey and I hope this helped you understand the diet better!

you will have better results following everything to the T! Don't cut out anything. The diet is well planned and when I was on it, lost 15 lbs month, without excercising. I was on for 2 months and got to my goal. Managed to maintain until menopause came along. I am trying to follow the Dr B food plan and since I am only looking at losing 15-20 lbs I will try on my own and if that doesn't work, I am heading back. good luck

I have been on it for 23 days now (I signed up for 4 weeks), and I have lost 21.3 LBS. I needed a quick program to get me motivated and to get me going, and it has done it. I will be going off program in 4 more days then taking it from there. This program works! No doubt about it. You need to be dedicated though. I have not cheated once, I eat exactly and only what I’m allowed, and nothing else. It really is not much food, and a lot of water. I don’t think I could go much more, I’m getting tired of the same sort of food every day. If you’re thinking about it, go for it. Men usually lose more and faster than women just a FYI, and if your going to do it, it's expensive keep on program and don’t cheat or your just wasting your money. I figured it was better spending money on losing a little weight and being healthy, then buying new fat clothes which fit me. Good luck!

The ads actually say 20 lbs a month. 20 lbs a week is impossible or you would be dead. So you did an actually more reasonable amount about 10 lbs a month. And if you exercise you are gaining muscle so you won't see weight loss but your inches should have gone down. I am on the diet but I am not interested in their 20 lbs a month standards. I don't find that safe. And I haven't started exercising but I plan to. Weight loss and being healthy with a healthy blood pressure is up to me, not an attachment to the numbers on the scale or blame of the vehicle to get me there.

It's NOT 800 calories a day...not unless you are eating a pound of meal or chicken at two meals. It's only about 500 calories a day, which is basically a starvation diet.

Your hair will definitely fall out. 500 calories cannot be long lasting so eventually you will need to go off it. If you don't lose weight, they take away all your fruit servings. So you're not eating very much. 3.5 oz of meat is very little. You are eating VERY LITTLE but if works because you are starving your body. The body goes into keto-acidosis which is fat burning stage because again, it's not being fed but you will lose weight. This is not a lifelong diet. It cannot be maintained. I've been on it twice, lost weight and put it back on. It's not realistic. Each time I lost tons of hair, but once I added fat back into my diet, the hair grew back.

It is not "Keto-acidosis". Ketoacidosis is deadly. The bernstein diet produces fat ketones in your urine which is a process through the liver. Two very different things. Your hair may fall out and so might your teeth if you really think about it but lets be realistic. It works differently for everyone and everyone's body reacts differently as well. Positive or negative. It isn't a lifestyle change. It is a diet. If you lose the weight and hope to keep it off by going right back to eating and living the way you were when you were over your target weight then that is a you issue and not a Bernstein Diet issue. There is a reason why it is medically supervised. To make sure that you are safe and losing weight. It is reasonable on any diet to lose 1-2% of your weight each week. You need to consider that with any diet. If you only have 10-15 lbs to lose and you weigh 160 lbs to start, you may not experience the same loss as someone who is 280 lbs with 140 lbs to lose.

I am 4 days into the diet, liking it so far but it is very tough to not be hungry with the small amount of food servings. This morning since I wasn't in Ketosis, yet down 5 lbs (water weight for sure), the nurse told me to take out the fruit. Obviously everyone is different and will reach ketosis at different times. I know many who have done the high fat, low carbs diet and taking 2 weeks to reach ketosis. I figure I will reach ketosis in another day or two, BUT I will not eliminate the fruit without adding a bit more protein or veggies. The calories are extremely low as it is.
