I too woke up with an enlarged uvula. I think its due to dehydration because i was drinking a lot of stuff last night, not alcohol, but sodas, juices..water.
Its also prolly caused by snoring, yes u definitely snore if u have this, or had this happened to u.

I drinked some tea(camomile tea), and I took a tablet of Claritin D 12hr, im not suggesting u guys take it, but i took it and i dont know if its that, that helped, but its like i feel its not that big enough anymore, and it was only 20-30 mins later after i took it and drinked that tea that i realized that its not big anymore.

I woke up this morning with my uvula touching my tongue. It's also hard to swallow. I did some research and it seems that the cause is dehydration.

I didn't eat much yesterday and foolishly drank tons of wine. I was also eating chips and salsa(mild, with no jalepenos). I really don't think my uvula is swollen from the combo of chips and salsa. I am telling myself it's from dehydration.

I know I don't drink enough water in general. It's a combination of the Alcohol, which drys out the mouth anyway, Salty chips, acidic tomatoes. Vomiting all night long can't help either. Yuck!

I hope this goes away soon. It's 10am now.....I am drinking water and juice.
I have learned my lesson and will drink at least eight glasses of Water not wine.

I got hammered last night, drank my height in beer (16ish beers) and woke up with this. I'm glad I found this because it looks like its something that will subside in a short amount of time.

I didn't eat spicy food or anything like that, I just drank a ton of beer, so I think its safe to say dehydration is probably the problem. Or overconsumption of alcohol in general.

The same thing happens to me as well. Maybe once every month or two and is almost always a result of drinking. My doctor suggested that it could be an allergy to alcohol and be sure to drink a lot of water while drinking. The water will dilute the uvula. My doctor also gave me an epi-pen, which I never used because it's not too serious. Extremely uncomfortable, but usually gone after the day is through or at least close to it.

It's not life threatening, I'm not sure where some of you guys came up with that.

I never had this problem with the uvula swelling in the back of my throat but I went to have a procedure done where the ENT Dr. puts a scope down your throat and into your stomach because I have been having problems swallowing.(I am 32)When I awoke and before I left the hospital,I looked in my throat in the mirror and discovered that the Dr removed my uvula! I have no idea why and I won't find out until Monday when I go for my recheck but let me tell you,it has been 7 days and I am still having some mild pain from the surgery. The first few days were really painful..I have heard that the uvula, scientifically, serves no legitimate purpose..
I also knew of someone who had this problem after a long night of drinking alcohol.Maybe from the constant swallowing and loud talking of a night out irritates it...I have no idea..But I would like to know why mine is gone!!!????

Reading over some of your posts and hearing the different explanations is very interesting, i too have an enlarged uvula.

Its been enlarged for a couple of days now, this is probably the 2nd or 3rd time this has happened to me in recent years.

Alot of your conclusions are drink related, anyhow i do not drink, havent done for the past 12yrs.

But drink does lead to dehydration, and this i where i think the problem lies, along with breathing dry air, i.e sleeping with central heating on or in a room that is poorly vented.

THIS IS NOT LIFE THREATENING, and panicking will only heighten your anxiety and will lead to stress inwhich will only make you even more dehydrated. (vicious circle)

Although, very uncomfortable it will dissapear in due course, some may take longer than others depending on body responses.

My advice, inwhich i am no doctor is to relax, do not get down or upset about this minor problem, if you feel your self noticing this issue and start to become panicky, take your self away from the situation by doing something that will simply destract your mind from this.

Play a computer game, have a chat on the phone with a friend, go for a walk, take up a hobbie, anything that eases your mind.

Also you can try different solutions if you just cant sit there, how about warm salt water gargle, mouth wash gargle, sucking a mint, cold icy water.

Also i find it very important as to how you approach the mental side of thinking, instead of thinking "what if" what if i cant breathe, what if my throat closes up, what if i have throat cancer. change this process of thinking to "so what" so what if i have discomfort in the back of my throat, i can still breath and swallow, and i will still eat that big steak dinner im gonna cook for my tea later lol

Its important to keep things in perspective, you are not gonna choke, its only the sensation of feeling your gonna choke, your always gonna be able to breathe, you will wake up in the morning.

as i said before i am no doctor, this is just an observation and the opinions i have through my own experiences of this annoying issue.

IT WILL GO AWAY AT SOME POINT AND YOU WILL FEEL NORMAL AGAIN,

If you sleep with central heating on, place a bowl of water in the room or under the rad to keep the air moist or simply hang a wet towl over the radiator.

As scary as it feels you will be ok in the end, try to drink plenty of water based fluids during the day, or if you are really concerned seek medical advice.

I will keep you posted as and when my uvula has gone back to normal size.

Stay chilled

I too have an enlarged uvula but this just happened now while working. I was eating Pizza flavored Goldfish crackers and drinking Orange Juice and my uvula began touching the back of my tongue. Before work I had nothing to drink so that might have something to do with it too....I hate this feeling it never happened to me before.

My uvula became enlarged through the night. This has happened to me before, but this is weird because I ate JALEPENO POPPERS last night.. TADAAAA here i am with this irritating problem.

Does anyone else have issues with tonsills or adnoids as well? I have all of the above n am curious as to if that is the issue.

This whole uvula thing sucks n this is the 4th or 5th time it has ever happened to me (spanned over 5 years)

I have had this happen twice: 1) After an entire night of vomiting (very sick! I thought I had stretched the uvula out by vomiting too much and that it would stay like that!) and 2) woke up with it after a night of nasal congestion/drainage - forced to breathe through my mouth and I think I was sleeping on my back and snoring (usually never sleep that way.)

The first time, it scared me to death, but it went away shortly thereafter.

Second time was this morning. I tried the salt thing, but I have a terrible gag reflex. I mixed baking soda, salt and some honey into about 1/2 cup of warm water (didn't really measure anything, just wanted enough soda and honey to make the salt coat the uvula.) I gargled once a few minutes ago and it already hurts less and seems to be less swollen! I made enough of the stuff to gargle a few more times.

My conclusion (for me, anyway) is that there are things that irritate the uvula and cause it to swell and hurt. It is an awful feeling, but I don't believe it is a sign of any disease.

DONT WORRY THATS FROM DRINKING IT HAPPENDS TO ME, ESPECIALLY IF A DRINK VODKA.
I HAVE GOTTEN IT BEFORE AND AS A MATTER OF FACT I JUST HAD A BIRTHDAY PARTY ON SAT FOR MY
DAUGHTER AND ON SUNDAY I WOKE UP WITH MU UVULA SWOLLEN JUST GIVE IT TIME IT WILL GO BACK
TO NORMAL IT MAY TAKE A DAY OR IT MAY NOT BUT, ITS ABOUT DRINKING. I DONT KNOW ABOUT DEHYDRATION
BECAUSE IVE BEEN DEHYDRATED WITHOUT DRINKING AND IT HAS NOT GOTTEN SWOLLEN. WITH THAT SAID
MY OPINION IS THAT IT HAS TO DO WITH THE ALCOHOL.

this is the weirdest thing ever. Last night was new years and i got completely hammered. At the party they had all these mexican foods like tacos chips and salsa and chimichangas. i went to bed but right before i did i threw up all over the place. this morning i woke up and could hardy eat or drink anything, and realised my uvula was touching my tounge! maybe there is something with mexican food and too much alcohol.

Interesting... as i type this i am sitting here with a swollen uvula. I woke up and the back of my throat felt extremely dry. I've had this happen a couple times before and as soon as i woke up and noticed how my throat felt i knew what was coming. I went and drank a whole bunch of water and gargled a bunch (but not with salt water, i should try that) and while it sorta helped it was only minimal.

I had about 3 beers last night, which isn't exactly a lot, nor out of the ordinary, and i also ate some chips as well. I find it very interesting that a number of other people in this topics have also mentioned that they had been eating chips and salsa (i didn't have any salsa though). Some of the other times that i've had this happen though, i had never eaten any chips nor been drinking any alcohol. I'm pretty certain that the air in my room is just really dry, and it only ever seems to happen if i've been sleeping on my back at all. If it was just dehydration though, i would have thought the water i drank should have helped more than it does.

It's been about an hour since it i woke up and it is better than it was, but it's still pretty uncomfortable. I really want to go back to sleep but i can't... It tends to last a couple hours before it's alright enough for that.

hello.my uvula is swollen this morning and it feels like i have phlem back there but there isn't. i notice this when i've been really tired and i sleep very deeply. i think it's because i'm actually sucking it down my throat while trying to breathe. of courese i have apnea and it's worse at times and better at times. it usually goes away after a few hours. this usually comes with a killer headache that only excedrine will get rid of. i think that keeping hydrated helps. i have actually thought about having it reduced, due to chronic tiredness and the headaches.

I get an enlarged uvula, It first started when I was around 12/13 years old (Wasnt an alcohol drinker at that age lol) I went to the doctor's & he gave me some tablets for it (An orange thing that dissolves on your tongue cant remember the name), I am now 24 and have recently figured out that I believe it to be an allergic reaction, I have noticed mine only ever happens when I eat prawns from a chinese takeaway so I stay clear of them now and touch wood it hasnt happened since. I have just learnt to live with it and I drink plenty of ice cold water when it does happen as I find it soothes the throat.
