Someon mentioned electrolytes/minerals in an earlier post and I think this is the problem.
I had been under massive stress for a long time and as a preventative measure (against calcification) I started taking chelated magnesium in relatively small doses. After a couple of weeks my hear started pounding, but Foolishly I didn't make the link with the magnesium - but this is because if you react badly it can affect brain function and you don't think properly.
I then upped the dose by one tablet and bingo, heart pulsing like it was going to come out of my chest just as everyone described. I followed the hospital GP route (everyone very helpful and nice and concerned) and once they saw my ECG was ok and blood pressure was good they sent me on my way with my heart still pounding and my pulse still PULSING. Interestingly, no one took my pulse or did an old fashioned palpating.
After doing some serious research I found that chelated magnesium can deplete calcium, which is needed for the electricity that keeps the heart going smoothly. There might also be an issue with blood viscosity.
I have started taking beetroot juice, and a calcium supplement, and its seems to be calming everything down
Ideally I would go and see an RBTI practicioner because they are the only ones more or less, who are geared into this stuff and would be able to sort me out - but sadly I'm in the wrong country and with not enough money to resolve this and I'm having to follow my intuition. If you can, go see someone!

Hi everyone. Im an 18 male who also experiences a pounding heartbeat that i can feel throughout my body. I workout 5 times a week and im a healthy eater. I was recently diagnosed with a infection in my intestines and colon. i lost 20 pounds during this whole sickness and im back to normal as of now. But, i went from 165 pounds to 147 in a matter of 2 weeks. Before i was sick, i never had this feeling and i believe since i lost all these pounds, it has caused me to feel my heartbeat due to not having much body fat anymore. This can be the case for many of you if you are a skinny person. The less body fat you have on your body, the more likelt you are going to feel your heartbeat. Hope this helps!!
I only began to have heavy thumping heartbeat about 12 months ago. I was absolutely fine before that. I complained to my GP who carried out blood tests and also did an ECG on me but found nothing. He said that I am healthy with normal chlorestorol level, normal blood levels, etc. I dare not go back to him since as he might think I am mental.
The thumping is worst at night when I lie down and try to relax. The heart just thumps so hard that I can hear it vibrate in my eardrums! It makes it very difficult for me to go to sleep. I somtimes end up coughing because the vibration irratates my chest. This affects my work week when I get to work feeling extremely tired as I take an extremely long time to actually fall asleep. I tried avoiding coffee or tea or any stimulating drinks as early as after lunch. I tried drinking camomile tea to relax. I tried to retire to bed earlier. I tried to chill out and relax before bedtime but nothing works.
I really wonder what am I suffering from. I read all these posts and no one seems to know what this condition is. HELP!
Amazing, I just thought I am the only person with this 'symptom', until I found this topic on google. I'm 35,male, 1.93m, 20% body fat, 102kg, training 4-5 times a week with rowing and triathlon at serious level.
Trying to figure out what has been wrong with me (strong heart beat, but resting heart rate of 54bpm), I suspect that tiredness might be the cause of the problem (full time job plus afternoon competition-type training). However, even when I had a complete week off with just sleep (10hours + afternoon nap) and plenty of healthy food I noticed that beating was still strong - so, it was not tiredness(?), or perhaps a week is not enough to rest when you train all year around(?). Other causes might be my childhood's low iron levels, but then recent blood analysis showed that it was within the healthy range, although at the bottom level. Cardiologist check up (triplex) showed no problem in heart. So, what's going on here?
Is this related with the fact that when I stand up from lay-down on the bed, my heart rate jumps from 54bpm to around 88-90 bpm and stays there for 2-3 minutes? Orthostatic hypertension? But then the excellent sport's science book by Noakes 'The lore of running', mentioned that athletes can have such heart beat flactuation due to overtiredness.
Another check I did was this: surrounding temperature! Yes. I just noticed that when I try to sleep in the night with cool air around my blankets, I feel much better. I am not sure about this, but here (in Greece) hot weather has been a prohibiting issue when exercising and when trying to sleep. I am not the kind of person who likes non-natural air, but sleeping with the air-conditioning on (around 25 degrees when weather is 38 degrees), my heart beat becomes lighter and more quiet. Just an idea.
For those of you who complain of doctor's absence reply into this topic, I think some doctors are definitely reading carefully our experiences and process them in their private labs! ;)
It's amazing to see so many posts in this discussion. I have the same problem, I can feel my heart beating fast before I go to sleep. Went to my doctor, took ECG, and my heart was fine. But I know something just doesn't feel right. Hope someone can enlighten us.
I have the same thing, and i can tell for sure, for me its from stress. Alot of health issues is coused by strees.
First when it happends , dont getscard, the more you worrie about , the more you think about it the worst it will get.
What always helps for me is, it mostly appends when im in bed, so lay there for some time and than wake up, walk around the house nakis, to let your body temperature lower, go ake aglass of cold water or smth, and than try to go to sleep again. It alwas works for me. Its almost as body gets an error when you try to sleep and you need to restart it . Hope that helps
Im so glad im not the only one. u guys are really comforting. im having the same heartbeat issues and its really messing with my sleep pattern. im 23 years old, male, 5 ft 6 about 145 pounds, id say about 13% body fat? I'm pretty thin but you can tell i go to the gym. few months ago started having this hard heartbeat where it would usually occur when lying down, now it sometimes occurs even during the day, for exampe today i went to see a movie and it started a bit there, now, its 7am and i feel my heartbeat so much that i havnt slept more than 2 hours. this has been happening mroe and more frequently. I must admit i think alcohol might have to do with it, I am currently studying abroad in Brazil (love it here haha) and when I go out with friends, sometimes i drink too much and have a blackout. so im probably going to lay low for a bit..
so my current symptoms are headaches, and this heartbeat that feels like my hearts going to come out of my chest and gets stronger when i lie down, my body is tired and i can feel my head wanting rest however im scared that something might go wrong in my sleep. when i get up to get water, sometimes i get a bit disoriented or dizzy but it all comes back within seconds.
as far as eating habits, i used to eat a lot of fast food (living in NYC) however now in Brazil i eat much healthier, go figure lol. im a very active person and back in May I needed to get a physical (in order to study abroad) and 2 doctors said i was completely healthy, that even my oxygen level (i believe thats what it was) was one of the highest they've seen, i dont smoke, no drugs, drink yes but as a social drinker and on weekends. Im thinking that might be screwing me up however these heart problems have been occurring since early 2012 and i didnt really drink much then. I'll randomly wake up at 2-3am and fall asleep again at 6 or 7 for no reason. and multiple nights in a row, recently, i sleep about 2-5 hours a night. and sometimes even 1. i start freaking out when it happens too.
i read that it could be that my mind is simply more in tune with my body? thats its mind over matter and that its normal? well i hope it is because its really annoying. i'll grab my chest and feel around just to see how strong it feels. i just want to sleep and not feel my heartbeat like its going to explode. it doesnt hurt at all, its just annoying. feel free to email and what not. maybe u guys have answers?

i have had these problems as well, I am somewhat in shape my diet is honestly no as good as it was in the past. even still when I was eating healty and exercising it was still occuring. typically in the evening while laying on the couch or in bed. I would start to feel my heart rate increase all of a sudden then I would feel as though I could not slow down, everything seemed to be moving 5x the normal speed, sounds inside our outside of the house seemed to be louder and as I would try and breath to calm myself down it made me feel as though I was moving 50miles an hour. I do have acid reflux and I am not sure if this has any relation to the laying down thing. It also like the rest of you causes me to have many a nights with little to no sleep. If i take sleeping medicine then I feel as though I have to take it just to sleep at night and I do not want to rely on those. I also am a smoker and have recently started to drink much more than in recent years. again, not sure about how that relates because it happened even when my drinking was at a bare minimum. I saw someone comment about potassium, I try to keep warm water and bannanas at home at all times, when this occurs i eat the bannana slowly in between drinks of warm water. I also can say that while i was taking prilosec or generic version this seemed to stop but not for sure, then when i stoped taking the prilosec the heart burn feeling began to come back and now my heart rate has began to do what it was doing in the past and increasing at times that are definitely not appreciated.
