Product called Mucinex can be bought over the counter, no prescription needed. It breaks up thick mucus, softens so you can spit it out. Costs about $12.00 but not expensive if it helps. Drink lots of water every day to keep mucus loose. Ask druggist what he recommends, there are several brands without prescription. Also, strong coffee opens up airways, good for asthma.
