Okay I have the same problem and it happened again today but not every day and I eat almost the same exact thing every day for lunch. 2.5 cups romaine, 1/8 c tomatoes, 1/4 cup combined red radishes & cucumber, 2 tablespoons of Ken's dressing, 2 celery stocks and one string cheese. about 2 hours later I drink 1 Atkins protein drink. Right after I finish eating I cannot keep my eyes open, I fight sleep for about 40 minutes and then bam I am awake. This doesn't happen after any other meal and not after I drink my protein drink. I eat low carb and this has been going on for almost 4 or 5 years but steadily worse in the past 6 month to a year, I am 59. I have no answers, I am Hypothyroid but I can't get that doctor to believe that I have adrenal issue which I am convinced that I do. I've done saliva test and I am up when I should be down and vice versa. I take Lunesta because I can't sleep when I am suppose to, it's so frustrating.......<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

I am a middle-aged Chinese man living in Hong Kong. I will also fall asleep very easily and quickly after having a meal, but when I have enough sleep (i.e. waking up naturely after several hours of sound sleep rather than waking up by an alarm clock) the previous night, this problem does not appear.

You can "pass" a fasting glucose test and still have a high degree of insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is incredibly difficult to diagnose because there are so many other things that can cause similar symptoms. An endocrinologist wouldn't hurt -- although an endocrinologist won't have an easier time pinning it down if it turns out, in fact, to be insulin resistance.

My experience and research has led me to believe that the prime indicators for insulin resistance are central-trunk obesity (belly fat) and "ebb-and-flow" hypoglycemic-like symptoms: fatigue (especially severe exercise fatigue), brain fog and sleepiness, and (occasionally) things like shaking/trembling, excessive thirst and hunger, and headaches. Note that I called these "ebb-and-flow" symptoms -- they seem to come and go -- probably linked to our eating and exercise habits and (possibly) our hormone cycles.

No one knows if insulin resistance causes central-trunk obesity or if central-trunk obesity causes insulin resistance. Certainly, however, they almost always go hand-in-hand.

If this doesn't describe you, then you definitely need to cast a wider net in search of answers to your symptoms.

If it IS insulin resistance, the best treatment is losing weight, lots of exercise, and diet with a smaller mix of simple carbohydrates. Tragically, it is a self-sustaining disorder because it tends to make these efforts abnormally difficult. Because it messes with your body's ability to convert glucose to energy, one of its main symptoms is severe exercise fatigue. One of its other symptoms is to thoroughly mess with your body's hunger signals. A killer combination.

You could do your own experiment by trying a cinnamon extract supplement for several weeks and carefully observe any impact on how you feel. (You can get it at any chain drug store or on-line -- don't bother with expensive brands). If that has an impact on your symptoms, then something is putting you on an insulin-glucose roller-coaster. You might add Resveratrol and Alpha Lipoic Acid if the cinnamon helps, (as with all supplements, YMMV, of course).

If you have yeast overgrowth Yeast is a fungus they go crazy when you sugar it is like a feeding frenzy the release toxin which makes you sicker and sicker the only doctor that can help I think is a nautropathic dr in the western medical they have many reasons for this but many are not educated on candida overgrowth which can go into other organs if it systemic which of course is severe. Do your research, get the test make an educated and informed decision regarding your diet.

People who haven't experienced in real sleepines after meal will not understand this term and how big this problem could be.
I had this problem. It has been big.
Now my advice is very simple and from "other side" :Eating needs good removal.
We are talking a lot and eating a lot. But forgot about simple things like breathing and also defecation. Comical?
Please ,in particular ask yourself the question how good is your bowel movement. And then give a clear answer for your self about your defecation without self-deception- "when it was last time? how often? and how many?". As same as for child.
It's strange that those people who has big problems with eating think that those very childish and  disgusting questions are not for him because his problem is  "bigger " and "somewhere deeper". They have native believe that their bowel movements are OF COURSE  OK. But very often bowel movements is not completely well and here lies the key to your chronical food intolerance and fatigue after eating, believe me.
I settle big problems with my own energy loss and head droppings after day meals when one day I found Ayurveda training that says - you can't eat if you still aren't in a reset of full yesterday's excrement from our body. Is neither childish, nor disgusting. Is logical!
So here could be key.  When I started monitoring and experimet with my eating and defecation cycle then I found that actually I can't require good digestion and good health because my bowels  and I'm not clear from yesterday or the day before yesterday. That's why my kidney, andrenals, liver needs recreation and purification as well. That's I'm so tired every day, especially after big meal because whole nutrition cycle is confuced.

There could be a lot illness an other reasons why our bowel movements are not insufficient and a lot ways to try to make it better.
But there is the next step for research.

I suspect too few calories consumed could make you as sleepy as too many - in that digestion attracts the bloodflow and it takes quite a bit of energy to digest.  The answer is a balance of the right amount of calories, and exercise.  If you don't want to sleep or be lazy after eating, take a walk.

OM! That happens to me too and it makes me uneasy ‘coz I thought it unusual. My friend told me that sleeping after a meal is precarious, so these occurrences really threaten me.

An update, about 3 weeks ago I was diagnosed with "lazy stomach", which means that I don't digest food or liquids like everyone else. Sometimes I will keep food in my stomach for over 18 hours, I know this because I threw it up. I have had all sorts of test and this is what it comes down to. I don't know if that has anything to do with being sleepy after I eat. I am on medicine to try and help the digestion and it seems to be helping but I still am falling asleep after lunch and now sometime breakfast.

Better take small amount of meals two or three times a day. It is the best way to avoid sleep after meals. I tried this trick its work.

ive suffered for years. there are times when i feel ucontrolably sleepy, weak,if i try to fight it i get palpertations......dont tell me thats normal its not. a few years ago i was asleep everyday by 2 pm and i felt like i was dying at times. i paid for food allergy/intolerance testing in the end and tested the results out. managing to pinpoint my triggers. it doesnt happen as often these days only when i go mad on the foods im sensitive to. i cant have shell fish, my symptoms dont fit with the norm for a reaction and it wont kill me to eat them but id be ill after the shrimps. i suffer with asthma and that can make my body shut down if i eat something that triggers my asthma, lack of oxygen to the brain causes your body to shut down. if your feeling overly ill after meals then dont ignore it. seek help. it could be a blood sugar problem, alergy, intolllerance...either way its worth checking out.

I've been suffering for a few years now with falling asleep right after my main meal at about 6pm and I usually wake at about 10:30-11:30 having lost my entire evening, then I can't sleep until about 5am which screws me up for the entire next day...

I often joked that the cook was doseing my food with sedatives or even the local water supply has been compromised with drugs, but I decided to look it up because it just started again and found this forum.

Oddly though, it only happens here at home, I travel around the world to various trade shows and often like to go away for the weekend and it never happens when I am away no matter how much I eat of what foods I eat, it only happens once I return home, within a few days it starts and continues until I go off again somewhere else.

Perhaps some of you have noticed this maybe when you are on holiday or visiting friends you don't suffer the same symptoms? Perhaps you diet changes or at least the source of your diet changes? Perhaps this phenomenon exists in pockets around the country, or perhaps we are all buying a distributed product coming from the same contaminated location?

Just throwing the idea that it may not be within yourselves that you will find the problem, my observation that it only happens to me at home could throw the light onto external sources that have not been considered before.

Perhaps someone could set up a forum in which we can all list what we've eaten in what volumes and where it was sourced, etc. and we may discover a pattern which links all of our symptoms together. For example it may be down to a preservative used in many foods acros the culinary spectrum which is causing the problem, or maybe the combination of such when two or more food stufs are mixed?

I am no scientist and I am no biologist and I have absolutely no medical knowledge whatsoever, but I do have an observation which may be of help...

Just sayin!!!...

I too struggle with excessive sleepiness after a salad type lunch, I too am considering no lunch as the only option. It is not really like tiredness, my brain is active and ready to work, it is more like physical shut down, cannot function physically, cannot drive safely.... and this with a salad made of chopped fresh veg - adding a spoonful of rice is lethal. Having a fruit salad, with a home made dressing with honey - lethal. Bagel is out of the question. Again this is not at all like post pudding snooziness, this is much more like a debilitation. I think a protein snack may be the way to go.
