i'm probably too late for the party but i chanced upon this article that the unripeness or the ripeness of the banana causes the stomachache due to the starch content of the unripe bananas.

so this explains it then. thanks for all the helpful inputs!
The very same thing happens to me. It is the strangest thing. I know I suffer with fructose malabsorption, but bananas are not on the list of fruits with higher fructose to glucose ratios. So I am at a total loss.
maybe it's because of the reason i mentioned above? does this happen everytime you eat bananas? or just during certain instances?
Could it be a problem with kidney function (the potassium) or gall bladder? I also can't eat avocado and have trouble with cantaloupe, both also high in potassium....
I use phazyme...ONLY thing that works for me..
Yeah its a chemical in the bananas we can't digest properly and its in kiwi's too and I guess Mellons and has to do with ragweed allergy season as the person bellow said which is really amazing because I always thought I had a HUGE cold every October. I assumed cause others had it and when I was little I HATED the smell of bananas, I couldn't stand it my brothers would chase me around with them and I would be crying running away, then when I got alittle older I tried a bite from one and figured out I didn't dislike the taste but then it gave me a big stomach ache and kiwi's do the same but not like bananas and i've never liked Mellon and it isn't the taste its just something about it (sorta like bananas and there horrible smell..) I didn't like and couldn't eat. I also know I am a VERY gassy person... kinda embarrassing to say but I fart like 50 times a day, I know its gross and sorta funny cause people are like OMG How?! but I think this is why my stomach doesn't like bananas cause it says people with "irritable bowel syndrome" are more prone to not like bananas because they cause gas (if can't digest them). I probably can't digest a lot of things properly so it turns into gas and every time I get anxious, I get diarrhea. I have bad bowels.
Well, I ate banana on its own yesterday and I was fine. Today I ate it with yoghurt and honey, and I got stomach ache. This would suggest it's either the yoghurt or honey. I know it's not a dairy thing, because there is no lactose in the yoghurt (I make it myself and ferment it for 24 hours ensuring there is no lactose). I have honey all the time. I think maybe it's just a comabination of the foods that is causing an issue. I've eaten this combination later in the day and had no issue. So it could be eating it on an empty stomach. My stomach ache starts right after eating it (as soon as it hits my stomach) and eases off after 20 mins. Just have to accept I can't eat yoghut and honey in the morning.
I have this same problem. No sickness, but incredibly painful cramps only 5 minutes after eating a banana (that's how it was so easy to figure out what it was causing the pain). I only starting eating them 6 months or so ago when I upped my gym routine and wanted a better diet with more protein and foods with slow releasing energy. They were fine for maybe 4 months, but have been causing my crippling pain since then.
I know I don't have a latex allergy and am not allergic to the other foods associated with bananas to my knowledge (kiwis, avocados etc). I don't understand how I can have been fine for so long and the pain just suddenly appears.
On the bright side, when I have eaten one and am in pain, I find eating bread or crackers (I go for Rivita) with it really reduces (although doesn't get rid of) the pain.
Did anyone ever find an explantion/solution to this?
I've had this since childhood and just had an OVERRIPE quarter of a banana because hubby made us a banana split for dessert and I mushed it up with the icecream and prayed that the quarter of a banana I ate would be ok after ALL these years of avoidance - and I am now crippled with pain.
Avoid eating things that can cause allergic reaction, so avoid eating Bananas if they are not good for you.
