Exact same problem from the sounds of it guys. Any nose blowing or raising of voice triggers it. If it helps anyone out there, I can reverse it by dousing my head in a basin of water and sucking water up through the nostril. Rarely lasts long though. It's just horrible, especially since I have absolutely no other medical issues. Doctors are baffled I think, I had an operation on my nose to no avail.
Yeahhhhh! I get that too.
It's so annoying. it ruins the rest of your day.
Like sometimes if you breathe in too quickly you get it?
And you feel so sick as well because it's such a horrible smell.
ERgh, I've got it now and it's SO annoying.
NOTHING gets rid of it even if you stick your nose into something else and smell it for a while. I really really wonder what it is.

OK, maybe I'm not crazy, it's your call, listen to this. I was looking for a home to lease in NC. I found one to look at, got the key from the mgt co. opened the front door and it was great. I looked around and finally went to the garage off of the kitchen. I opened the door and BAM!!!! I have tasted and smelled the (garage) ever since that day, it's disgusting It’s there 24/7 the only trigger in something that tastes or smells more intense which in turn intensifies my problem. The only thing that tastes close to what it should is Wasabi. Unlike some of you I can describe the taste and smell……..
Occasionally I wake to a burnt smell similar to the other descriptions. I always think my house is on fire and jump up to check. It is 5:30 a.m. here and decided to google it and here I am. I have a history of sinus infections, deviated septum and post nasal drip. My sense of smell has diminshed over the years and I do not always smell odors unless strong. I drink coffee every morning but have never thought that was it. Food has not really tasted good to me in a long time and I attributed some of these changes to long term medications I am taking. So, perhaps some meds could cause this. I also ran across something called tonsil stones. I still have my tonsils and they can trap food particles as well as post nasal drip debris. These lodge back in crevices by your tonsils and form what are called tonsil stones. When they dislodge and break open they smell and taste awful. You can sometimes see them and pick them out yourself. One option was a saltwater rinse and gargle. Just google tonsil stones and you will find all kinds of info especially the bad smell and taste. As you probably know, the throat, nose and mouth are all close together. Good luck to all. I am going back to bed after I brush my teeth and gargle.
Hi. I've been having the same exact problem for a couple years now. Anytime I blow my nose, talk loud or yell, the bad taste/ smell comes.
This is just a thought but, are any of you smokers? I have been a smoker for awhile. Im seriously wanting to quit.
Anyway I was wondering if smoking could be part of this problem. I keep thinking that once I quit smoking that I won't have this problem anymore.

You all are describing that same thing I have. I had a sinus infection about 4 months ago and haven't smelled or tasted anything since except this nausiating burnt smell... and everything smells the same; it has no variation. I've used nasal flushes, I'm on antibiotics and so far nothing. Coffee is the same but overpowering, starches, car exhaust, etc all smell the same. The only thing that doesn't have the smell (or any smell) are vegetables, fruit, and meat. If any of these are cooked with flour or a starch they pick up the same awful smell. No one seems to know what it is.
sorry about that. No, didnt work but I have been using a neti pot once a day and that seems to help a bit.
I posted about working in a coffee shop and it started well scratch that I don't work there anymore I was a stay at home mom and it still happened when I breathed in to much or blew my nose. Now its almost 24/7 someone else posted a comment that said when they hung there head and held their breath it went away, freaked me out because to make the burnt smell/ distorted smell go away I would litterally hang backwards from my chair, love seat, anything. It worked... For a month maybe now nothing its almost always there. I saw an ent a few months back and he said "I really have no idea, sorry" he sent me to get a cat scan, came back clear. Today I went in to get an mri of the brain I will lwt u all know if anything happens. However things like this don't just happen our bodies were made great and this clearly makes people misurable and gets worse with time. I am seriously on the hunt for a least a diagnosis, has anyone ever seen mysterydiagnosis? This is like that show to me this could be something extremely rare who knows but I am looking up doctors around may take along time but with the help of each other we could find a reasone,or at least a name. Please email me with symptoms or anything I'm on the hunt, and the more people to find this out the better.
I hope all goes well with your DR visit and please report back if you get a diagnosis.
Good Luck
Good Luck
:-D :-D Ok I had to come back to let you all know. That in my case. Afer my cracked tooth was extracted . This Horrible sinus smell went away. Good Luck to all. I remember how annoying this condition was.
Started 8 months ago, intermittent for now. Will last for 1-2 days but normally gone in the morning. I thought it was related to chocolate or brownies, but happens without. I am non-smoker, non-coffee drinker, not-diabetic, not overweight, over 50. It sounds like this will get worse.
Hi! My name is Sandra and Im 26 yrs old. I think I have the same thing but what I smell is different. In the 7th grade (14 years ago) I got this weird smell in my nose and I could taste it too. It sort of smells like cherry chap stick or really ripe bananas. I cant really describe it but I know its a real sweet smell. Every year it comes. I'll wake up one mornng and it kicks in. It normally lasts for about a month and then it goes away but over the years, the scent has gotten A LOT STRONGER! And sometimes, its overwhelming. Ive noticed that the cold air makes it smell and even taste stronger. I too, have been to a doctor but she looked at me like I was crazy. She said that I migt have a yearly sinus infection but that if it wasnt bothering me then I shouldnt worry about it. I've asked my family members if they have ever experienced anything like it but no one has.
Hi, everyone!
This problem started pretty recently (a year ago maybe?) I'm not sure if it's what everyone else here is having, but it sure sounds like it's the same. It's a slightly chemical odor, sorta' like ink or plastic (I don't know how burnt coffee smells like so it might or might not smell like that). It seems to occur at random. I've got it happening right now, but it's in short bursts (it comes for a few seconds and disappears). I've also just recovered from the flu, so it might be associated with that. I thought it might've come from blowing my nose so many times that my sinuses produced this weird odor, but then I remembered I had gotten it before without having the flu. I used a nasal spray as well, which also could have led to this problem. Also, I've tried smelling other tolerable things, but this odor just overpowers it all. I haven't gone to the doctor yet, and all of you folks who have gone to the doctor to no avail are kind of worrying me. Especially since it apparently seems to get worse each time, and whatever you do to stop it doesn't work later! I already have a headache from sinus pressure/nasal congestion and this smell only makes it worse. It's such a repulsive odor. :
I hope someone gets some information on this weird thing going on and that a diagnosis comes soon! I don't think we're just crazy here (at least I hope we're not). This thing has got to go!
Thanks, everyone. :-D

I have had the same sinus problem for two years. I'm pretty sure it's unrelated to our individual diets. For instance, I don't drink coffee and I don't smoke. I'm still fortunate enough to be able to temporarily sleep it off, which means I can fall asleep with the bad smell and wake up without it. I only have it in my right nostril, and have to plug my nose when eating to enjoy the taste of food. I really hope this doesn't continue to get worse, or even become permanent like people have mentioned, because it seriously effects my eating habits! By the way, my ENT pretty much blew me off too. Why is it so hard to find a decent doctor who is willing to find answers these days? I've learned more about this online than at various doctors offices, and it was cheaper!
I've been having this same issue for about 6 months and it took a while for me to realize it only happens when I sniffle or blow my nose. Sometimes I can get away with blowing my nose if I'm real careful and other times all it takes is the smallest sniffle or whatever you wanna call it to trigger it. It usually lasts about 5 or more hours and if I fall asleep its always gone when I wake up...until later. While this is going on everything tastes bad and certain foods are worse than others. Steak or any kind beef is smells real bad. so does pizza. and pretty much everything else has these plastic, chemical, stale overtones to them. I'm going to the doctor soon to hopefully get a diagnosis but I'm not expecting one after reading all these stories. Sometimes I can go a few days without getting it if I'm real careful about sniffling or blowing my nose, but it always ends up happening again. Seven months ago I had never heard of or experienced this. I just hope it goes away eventually.
