I am 21 and I have had a severe, constant headache for 2 months now.  Prior to this, for the past year or so I've been known to get headaches that last anywhere from a day to a week.  But never did they last longer than a week until this one.  Sometimes the pain gets very very dull where I can just barely tell the headache is there.  Other times the pain will be so severe that I'm crying and vomiting.  I'm also nauseous very often and dizzy at times.  The pain is also in the front of my head and my temples, and sometimes causes a sore neck as well.  I am sensitive to light and sound in the sense that the pain will grow sharper.  Otherwise, it's just a constant throbbing.
I've been to an urgent care center where they prescribed pills that didn't work.  I've been to a regular doctor where they gave me Vicodin, meds for the nausea, and strong Motrin.  The Vicodin and nausea meds actually make things worse unless I fall asleep right after I take them.  The Motrin helps enough to get me through work, sometimes.  I have been referred to a Neurologist but cannot get an appointment until May.
I thought that maybe it could be stress related because I work full time and take classes full time.  But even on my most relaxed days the headache remains.
It upsets me to see so many others suffering from these same headaches without finding a cure.  As others have said, if anybody does find a solution, please share it.

This seems like a common theme and I have been in a similar boat for the last 3 months. This is a terrible feeling, isn't it? Can anyone remember if they had a stressful or traumatic event to start off the series headaches they are having? I believe that the symptoms here (for the most part) are caused by stress and anxiety. This is the way our body's react to an overload of stress, even a normal event that wouldn't be stressful for most can lead to awful pain and headaches. If your stress level is already at the max, anything can tip you over the edge into extreme pain - dizziness, nausea, headaches, etc. The good news is that these will eventually go away. The difficult part is figuring out ways to relax. I'm hoping that everyone here at some point during their 3 or 4 month (or more) headache had it subside at some point when you were completely relaxed. True, it never really goes away completely (at least it feels like that sometimes), but for that time when you're completely relaxed it goes away. If this is the case with anyone, stress and anxiety is most likely your problem. Now I'm not a doctor, so please get checked out if you believe your problem to be something else. I can tell you that the thoughts of thinking there is always something wrong, or the stress that comes from not knowing what is wrong with you just adds fuel to the fire. Try yoga, exercising really helps, or whatever it is that you do to relax. If it subsides, there is a good chance that this is indeed your problem. I would recommend not going on medication if possible, particularly pain killers as your body can get used to them. Same goes for anti anxiety meds, but if you just can't get rid of the heart pounding and constant worry, talk to your doctor about getting some help. I wish everyone the best and remember that this will eventually go away. You just need to take the stress out of your life for a prolonged period and bring your body back to normal.

I really thought I was the only one that has been going through this. I'm seventeen and I have had this headache since late January. I went to the doctor after the first week had passed and no medicine was working. She prescribed me a hydrocodone, a muscle relaxer, and an antibiotic (in case it was a sinus infection) as well as a shot that was supposed to get rid of it in 20 minutes. It made it worse than it had been. A few weeks passed and still no relief. I decided to try a chiropractor before I went to a neurologist. My first vertebra was out of alignment and he said that was the cause of my headaches. So he popped me back into place and I have been coming back weekly for readjustments. My headache was supposed to be easing up long ago if my spine was to blame. I have had headaches once or twice a week since I was a child, but nothing like this. It began just mainly around my forehead and temples, then behind my ears. In addition to those areas, it has began throbbing in the rear left side of my head. It is April and I am struggling to focus in school or on anything but the pain. I just need relief.

You should look up "New Persistant Daily Headache". That is what my neurologist prescibed me with. This May will be 2 years that I've had my headache and I wake up with it every single day. Mine is also mainly in my temple area....it's is NO fun.

Hi all,
this is a pretty old post, but i'm going to attempt this anyway. i've had a headache for 4+ months now. started early december 2012 and has been ongoing since. i've found that taking exedrine migraine strength has helped me, but not completely. if i take 2 before bed, i will not wake up with a headache. that worked for a couple months... but now, by the time 4-6pm rolls around, the headache is back. so i have been "sticking it out" until bed time so i don't take the exedrine too early. i've taken it earlier than bedtime before and woken up in the middle of the night with extreme pain. probably one of the worst headaches ever. so i vowed never to take it earlier than right before bed. well, now taking them the night before has only been helping with the "waking up" without a headache. they are starting to arrive daily in the evenings.

my story goes like this:
i'm not an extremely smart person (like the rest of the people in these posts) but i'm not a dumba** either. i'd say i'm about average.
i've always had headaches in my life, but they'd come right before the menstrual cycle, and then be gone the rest of the month. when these headaches would come, i'd take 4 ibuprofen. this current 4+ month headache is not fixed by ibuprofen. my husband came home with exedrine migraine one night in dec to ease the pain and it actually worked. but i do not believe i'm having migraines. there was possibly one evening where i had a possible migraine. i was nauseated and needed to be in a dark room with no lights. i haven't had one like that since then, but have definitely not been cleared of the chronic headache. i can't tell if it's a chronic tension headache or just a chronic headache. i've got symptoms of both.

my headaches will travel from the back of my head, to the bridge of my nose, to the top of my head, to the temples (sometimes both, sometimes just one side but it a different side every time). i also have extreme back and neck pain that has just recently been happening, probably the last month or so. i sleep with a heating pad when the back pain is extreme. but the pain in my neck and back are no where near as bad as my headaches. i can live through the back and neck stuff. the headaches really make me want to end it all sometimes. i love being asleep because i cannot feel pain. it's weird, but that's another thing that makes me different from the rest. i actually get a good nights sleep most of the time. it must be because i take the pills at night before i go to bed. i wake up 2-4 times a night but that's to go to the bathroom. i have a weak bladder and if i roll over and it wakes me up, i cannot fall back asleep until i go to the bathroom.

i am a vegetarian. i also take iron pills (have been tested for anemia 2 times and came back normal). i was told by my dr to take iron pills because i was chewing ice CONSTANTLY. this was a few years back. but i used to do it as a teenager all the time. i thought it was just because i liked ice. i used to crave it. my mouth would water. then i stopped randomly when i was in my early 20s. (i'm 29 now). then just randomly 2 years ago i started chewing ice again. i was doing it for a few months and then was at the dr and mentioned it to them and they said to try iron pills (after 2 tests for anemia coming back normal). so i did, and i did not once think about ice again! it was the weirdest thing! so that's why i take iron pills.

being a vegetarian, i probably don't get all of the nutrients i need. i still drink milk and eat cheese and eggs. i do eat things like morning star hot dogs, and corn dogs, etc. they provide protein. but i don't eat them every day.

i feel like my dr isn't taking me seriously either. i am a bit of a hypochondriac so maybe i can see her lack of concern, but i have had a ct scan that came back normal. she suggested anti seizure medications and anti depressants, but i don't want to be locked to a pill to cure my pain. i'd like for it to be figured out and fixed without having to take something every day (like i currently do).

last night i decided i wasn't going to take the excedrine. today was my first day without excedrine the night before and i've been in SEVERE pain all day long. i forced myself to run (i've been trying to get back into running, but haven't been able to since these headaches started). amazingly during the run, the headache wasn't terrible. i don't know if it's because my brain was focusing on my breathing and the pain in my legs, etc., but as soon as i got back, my head was pounding.

when i tell my friends and family about the headaches (no one seems to care much besides my mom and husband, i have wonderful friends and family huh!) i describe them as being like hangovers without the alcohol and nauseous feeling. but laying in bed doesn't cure my headache like it would cure a hangover!

wow, i've written a lot here. im sure i could write a novel if i kept going, but i won't. my next step is the chiropractor. anyone have any suggestions???? please and thank you!

much love,
emily

Hi Emily,

As a vegetarian, it may be worth asking your doctor to run a vitamin panel to make sure you are getting everything in your diet you need. It may be that a simple supplement could do the trick. It was Vitamin D in my case, but could be caused by any number of things.

As you've also been taking painkillers for a number of months, you may also want to look into rebound headaches. While the temporarily relief is so valuable, it can do more harm than good.

I know its hard, but keep pushing your doctor for answers. Sometimes it can be worth taking someone with you, like your mom or husband. They can explain the effects they've seen and will have more energy to push for answers.

In the meantime, try to stay positive and know you'll get there. Good luck.

May aswel keep the post alive...

I Have the same problems, Im 21 ive been in agony for 3-4months (headaches all around but mostly left side of the face and around the eye with sharp pains regulary in the left eye and rare in the right, not sensative to light or sound, sometimes dizziness accurs and short term memory and long are slowly proving to be difficult) and within a few weeks of it all starting one night the pain got so much i went to the hospital (A&E) pain killers did nothing and i was desperate for some pain relief but i ended up waiting for 5 hours until the pain evetually faded and for a nurse to treat me like i was wasting there time and give me co-codamal. This happend once before many years ago but with me being young they did a scan and other various tests and found nothing and i qoute 'youre a medical mystery'.

I have been back and forth to my GP they tried me on some medication which i forgot the name but it did nothing, then they put me on gabapentin which eased the pain and allows me to get some sleep --(Im on 300mg 2capsules 3times a day, before the pain started i was acitvely working out and dropped to 162pounds from 172 and from taking the medication ive gone to 182 *on all firgures give or take a pound or two*) The gabapentin makes me extremly tired and make slife very difficult, keeping a normal sleeping pattern is the most difficult.

Ive checked my eyes and seen a nuerologist, doctors are pointing towards migraines and obviously i disagree...

Im waiting on some CT scan results and of which if they come back clear i will be requesting an MRI scanw ith contrast to rule out anything serious, to speak to an ophthalmologist ( aspec with eyes), then to see if 'clutser headaches' is the answer, and last to have my neck thoughorly scanned... I cant take the pain anymore im desperate, being on such medication makes working impossible and i cant afford it to last any longer.

i hope people have found relief and possibly answers...

regards
Aj

After suffering with these headaches for more than a year, I've now been diagnosed with Undifferentiated Connective Tissue Disease (UCTD), an auto immune disease associated with lupus. If you are suffering other health issues, eg vitamin D difficiency, iron difficiency, fatigue, brain fog, rashes, aches and pains, then it might be worth looking into. If it sounds familiar, your doctor can start just by checking the levels of antibodies in your blood. Good luck to you all - I hope you find relief
