its very common after you quit smoking for the phlem in your throat to break up and come out... that means spit it out dont put it rite back in there. as far as quitting for years and still feeling pain you should go see a specialist but these ARE signs of copd or influzema. but if u guys are worried about trying to stop smoking now you should just go to google and type in Dec 21st, 2012. do a little research you may live for today. You may decide to quit you may decide to start. (dont take my advice seriously but some things arent for everyone)
Hey, i just quit smoking, after smoking for 5 years almost a packet or more a day. Ive only been at it for one day, but when i read how you guys are getting ill from quitting im wondering if i should stick too it. Ive been getting really sick, muscel craps, head aches, reflux, sleeping problems, feeling like im going to vomit.
have you been trying to build your body back up like taking the right vitamins, or exercising? Do you think that a good idea?

Exercise will definitely help your mood and give you a little more energy. Keep in mind though that you probably smoked for a very long time, 26+ years for me, so it's going to take a while for your body to get back into balance. Don't give up. Being smoke free is way better than smoking. Just take it one day at a time.

smoker for 40yrs stopped 6 months now went cold turkey have had dry throat and breathing difficulties and all sorts of pain ever since stopping put on stone in weight never had these problems before benefits smell fresher and do not have the awful smell of an ashtray long way to go yet but hopefully i will stay off them
So failed a couple Physical tests, and had to go to the doctor for a check up. Obviuosly smoking is killing me. After smoking heavily for 18 years ( at least a pack a day ) I'm now on the patch. It's been about 7 days thus far, and the dry throat, and tight chest is enough to drive a person crazy. Actually the nicotine patch does seem to help, and it's just a matter of getting of the physc of having a smoke in my hand.
Doctor gave me a PFT test, and shows I do have some damage, and they gave me an inhaler (broncidialtor) for exercise. I've been running now for about 6 months, and the shortness of breath is my biggest enemy. Hoping that now I'm done smoking I'll start seeing some results soon. In the mean time I just suffer. I've never coughed from smoking before, and now I seem to cough all the time.
What's next???

I stopped smoking 7 months ago and have had very bad effects from it. The first 3 months i was ok but then i started getting a racing heart, shortness of breathe, severe tension all through my body, weakness in legs' sweats and other problems. I never once thought any of this was because i stopped smoking. The doctor did a lot of heart tests and other test, my thyroid went underactive as well. My heart tests all came back ok but my heart rythm changed. Any one who has suffered panic attacks would know these symptoms right.
After trial and error with different medication i was diagnosed as having a chemical inbalance in the brain due to giving up smoking this caused me to suffer a 24/7 panic attack and the effect it had on me was severe. Now i need to take time off work in a few months (long service leave due then) and get put on anti depressants to fix me. Until then the doctors advice...........smoke a few a day.
My husband gave up the same time i did and he has suffered severe digestive and bowel problems including bleeding and bloatedness...his diagnosis nothign wrong but all effects of quitting smoking...his are slowly improving but it is very distressing to him. he has not started smoking again.

I'm relieved to be in touch with so many people who have been through the same experience. I quit smoking 5 years ago after 25 years of smoking. I never stopped having physical problems. Not only related to respiratory problems but also muscle pains, stomach related etc. Doctors tell me I have an allergy and doctors don't want to listen to me telling them that I think its because I quite smoking. So I endured a series of inhalers, nasal sprays, etc. which I threw away a couple of months ago and now starting to feel better. But they where horrible 5 years.
I have the same constant throat clearing and it is definitely related to either ambien or zyban since this has started again since I went back on both drugs. it went away when I stopped them both for a couple of weeks. This has surprised me as it isn't supposed to be a side effect.it is definitely not allergies as I get those too and never ever have had this throat clearing type of congestion before. at least I know it will go away. I am three months no nicotine and four and a half quitting smoking. Insomnia has been really bad even with the meds.but apparently my chronic lower back pain and constant gas/diarrhea seem to be gone. Odd. Breathing is fine. The insomnia is ruining my life and causing big problems ast home and work. So tired that I have no memory or concentration and mood swings.and have no energy to do any thing.
Guy, I read all your experiences, all the best for the difficulties faced by you.
I was also a smoker since last eight years, initially started with two packs but lately reduced a lot, never the less was a smoker
though sub-conciously never felt like one.
Last year I had a pneumonia because of smoking , the temp was in excess of 104C for 10 days.
After that whenever I increased smoking I got sick and temp shoots up ( 103C-104C), I realise its time to quit before it becomes too late.
So I quit Cold turkey on 8 Sept 2010. Third week running ( still counting...... means not a non-smoker yet :-))
One thing which I did was I excercise regularly since stopping , did cardio (decent time) and weight training
Interestingly I am not facing any of the withdrawal symptoms. Also I am surprised that I was not even affected by carvings.
Last three days I was not able to work out due to work pressure.
So the withdrawal symtoms came in, I started getting affected by acidity,Cough,Phlegm , etc in last three days.
I decided not to miss my work out, today again after working out everything is normal, only a little bit of cough
From my experience I think working out is important .......
(also read few arcticle regarding how smoking works ...........)
So all of you who can excercise, I will suggest you to work out , consider this as a medicine for your body......
It will improve overall fitness as well.
Thanks

Wow where do i begin? ! am 26 years old and smoked about half a pack give or take a few for about 10 years. Last January of 2010 I came down with bronchitis from mold. I had to quit smoking due to not being able to breath. I thought I would get better when i quit but I was sick with copd/ asthma like symtoms for the last 10 months. especially in the summer months when the humidity was high. I was diagnosed with copd but with further pulmonary testing it was ruled out. I was diagnosed with asthma and put on symbicort, albuterol, zyrtec and singulair, in and out of the hospital. Also flonase for sinuses and prilosec for acid reflux. Just recently I was getting worse and also had started smoking a few ciggs here and there for the last 5 months. I quit completely after being diagnosed with bronchitis again and put on an oral steroid for 6 days and an antibiotic. I do feel better and now realize how even smoking a few ciggs here and there was making me extremely sick. I hope now that I can feel better indefinetly! I still wake up short of breath and cough up so much c**p it's ridiculous. I really think ciggs are harmfull to everyone, but some people just can't smoke at all!! I am one of those. Please quit before it is too late. I've had such a hard time this last year. If I would of quit before I got sick I would of avoided all of these problems. to top it all off my lung doctor doesn't even think i have asthma, this is all due to just smoking!
I honestly beleive I know what the answer is to all those who are feeling ill after quitting.
When I first quit I stopped cold turkey and was ill for months with chest pains, tiresness, cognitive impairment and all sorts of other unbearable side effects. In the end I decided to smoke again.
This time (a year later) I decided to do it differently. This works 100% but only if you STICK TO THE PLAN.
1) Every 2 days reduce your smoking by 1 cigerette. Start off with your maximum, mine was 25.
2) Once you are down to 10 cigerettes, start taking chamtix (champix) full recommended dose (not loading dose).
3) when you are on 5 cigerettes, cut your chamtix dose in half.
4) after your cigerettes are down to 0 continue taking the chamtix for a month. On the last week cut your half dose into quarter doses.
I did it this way and got no cravings, no pains and none of the symptoms I had previously. It was a peice of cake and I have amazing lung capacity now and mental agility. My friends have all tried my method and it's worked.
Good luck

yes looks like we are all going though it.. i had a heart attack may last year stopped smoking. after a few month i was going to the hospital jym and then a rehab jym.. its been 9 month now since i stopped and i think ive had nothing but trouble stopping smoking with my breathing like breathless ness i know or i think its not my heart because i can walk far and wide its comes on you at times like tea time late eveings feels like there somthing stuck in your neck.. wanting to clear your throut but cant.. i sleep ok in the morning i feel great getting up but come 10 or 11 it starts go for my walk or gym its gone later on its back... i am more at the doctors that ive ever been.. since ive stopped.. funny really everyone in the country doctors giving up is hard enough!! but what they dont tell you how bad your going to feel in 6 to 12 month time.. ok your skin well being my be ok.. but when that breathless comes, which you never had when you was smoking 20 a day.. worrys you but do you get help from the same people who told you to stop in the first place! NO your on your own mates.. unless your a drug taker or drunk... THEN ALL THE HELP IN THE WORLD IS AT YOUR FEET. next time a doctor ask me do i smoke im going to say if i stopped today doctor who will my breathing be in 9 month time... if he says yes im going to say i need afull test because its not!!!!
It was a strong determination to stop smoking, in my case. I know very well that the sudden quitting of smoking will definitely subject to the response from my body itself because this habit become a part of my life from the last
fifteen years.
I was not interested to wake up in the morning, angry, away from hungry and was sorrowful and sometimes little
violent. The very first 12 hours were much hard and was a challenge to survive the invitation to smoke again. Mouth
and tong became dry and felt an in-completion everywhere around me.
Any how now I am safe in my concept and the decision going strong and strong. And this is my call to all smokers
to join in my way and this is the best present for your dears than anything !!
This was just so funny to me this morning,I just had to let you know I can relate.Your last sentence summed it up for me too.Still smiling.
