I also get skipped beats and coughing together. I have learned over time that Calcium/magnesium supplements do the trick. When they start to really bother me (feels like my heart is thumping when pulse skips a beat), I quickly take magnesium supplements. It turns out that a calcium/mag 2:1 ratio is important. Everyone is different, you need to experiment with what works for you. There is alot of information to digest but well worth it. There are actual studies that have been done where women on low magnesium diets had more irregular heart beats. I'm amazed that more cardiologists are not aware of this and would even think of prescribing dangerous drugs when mineral supplements are the key!

I've had the same symptoms as you all since high school.  In my case, I think it's linked to stress.  And having an episode freaks me out, which causes a mild panic attack, where I then hyperventilate, which causes the dizziness and nauseous feeling.  The skipped beat and cough usually happen during a down time, way after a stressful event, while I'm lying down.  It's almost as if my heart is struggling to pump sometimes... Thanks to all for sharing.  It makes me feel like I'm not alone.  I think I'll try the CaMg.

The most common causes (and I've had most of them) are
Stress- palpitations occur becaus the heart rate is too high. Which causes a skipped beat (heart resetting itself) caffeine makes this worse.
Acid reflux- maybe you don't feel acid seeping into your lungs but it could be. Chocolate and caffeine makes reflux it worse. (which causes a cough)
Asthma/bronchitis- lack of oxygen can cause this. This can be worstened by lying down.
Or an unknown heart issue. Most of you are probably like me and it's a stress, stomach and breathing issue.

a lot of it has to do with anxiety/ stress. if your a female though palpitations, skipping beats etc are a part of pms symptoms. pay more attention. they occur about 7-14 days before you actually get the time of the month. symptoms range but once that time comes your symptoms go away. track it. when it starts when its that "time" and how you feel during and after. also if it turns out it is the pms lower salt intake and caffeine. etc. it tends to make symptoms worse

What you could have is a heart valve that is slow in closing at times. You can control that with COQ10.Get a 32oz drink container and drink one full of water each morning.Cut out the Coke and Pepsi drink's.Cut back on the coffee.Along with the water take 100mg of Ubiquinol. Our body converts COQ10 to Ubiquinol.I use the brand that GNC has.Try it for two week's.if it works, you can look for a less expensive one that work's.Drink plenty of water during the day.Stay away from sport and engery drink's.JUST PLAIN WATER IS THE BEST>

I have the EXACT same symptoms and I wore the heart monitor for 24 hours as well - and the palpitations didn't happen once! For the past few days the palpitations have been non-stop and I'm getting concerned again.

I have had this condition also. Most time's it is a valve that is slow in closing at times. It feels as if the heart is skipping a beat.It is out of rythm at this time.
COQ10 will regulate the heart and keep it in rythm. Also drink plenty of plain water.Soft drink's and other liquid does not count. Why,because your digestive system has to seperate everything that we eat and drink. If it does not have enough water,it will get some from your blood.Blood minus water becomes thicker.Thicker the blood the more pressure the heart has to build up.
Our boady need's COQ10 for maney use's.COQ10 is converted to ubiquinol. As we get older our body start's to loose the ability to do this.
I take 100mg of ubiquinol that can be purchased at GNC.Try it and if it work's for you,go on line and you might find a better price

Thanks to everyone for their constructive contributions to this thread.  While it's always important to confer with a doctor about medical questions and ailments, it's of course helpful to become educated beforehand.  Reading this thread has been a tremendous comfort to me.

I'm a physically healthy male who just turned 50.  I think it has been about 8 years or so since the first time I felt this, a premature atrial contraction (PAC).  Like your heart skipping a beat, or pausing for just a split second, and triggering the urge to cough.  When it happens, it's just once, never twice or more in a row, and it's usually connected to certain things:  fairly soon after drinking some coffee/tea, after sex or working out, or when I first get up in the morning.  I "detect" it about a few times per month, and of course now I know it can happen without giving a person any physical indication of its occurrence.

My mother (now in her late 70's) has had some heart arrhythmia and palpitation issues.  She's on some special medication specifically to reduce the chances for a heart arrhythmia.  I fear that my premature atrial contraction may be a precursor to this, although I'm much more physically fit than her (she doesn't exercise regularly, and when she does it's just a short walk or bike ride).  I'll have to keep myself aware of the possibility of it getting worse.  In any case, it's good to know that in the meantime it's nothing serious, that it's perfectly normal to experience PAC.

i'm having the same issues. I describe this as more like someone kicked me in the chest. My heart skips a beat or a quick hard thump and then i cough. Sometimes i cough first than feel it. There is no rhyme or reason has anyone had a diagnosis??

Very similar heart symptoms for about 2 weeks now. The only difference for me is that I have some form of digestion disorder that causes me to have a ton of excess gas in my stomach/intestines which I burp out throughout the day. The thing is that the digestion problem has been ongoing for years, while the heart issue is only 2 weeks... I suspect they're unrelated.

I was really worried at the start so I booked an appointment with my doctor. He listened to my heart, and told me it sounded "very healthy" and sent me on my way. At times I feel I cant take a complete breath of air, and my lungs push against my heart as I attempt to breathe fully. The strange thing is my head has felt heavy, sort of a 'full of blood' feeling, or as if I were doing a handstand ever since the heart palpitations started 2 weeks ago. I also have a headache and occasionally feel pressure on my heart. I had an ECG a year ago for something (pain/infections in finger/toe tips, suspected heart infection) but it showed my heart was entirely healthy.

Hi, I am a 44yr old male. have had these symptoms since I was 11. the first time it happened I told my Dad that my heart had stopped, he said dont be silly. I lived with it alone untill an episode with my now wife when I was about 25. She made me go to the doctors. He told me to cut back on caffine and it went from an almost daily event to once every 2 or 3 months, now it rarely happens, but when it does it doesn't worry me. I am used to it now

I am glad to see these posts. I too have had the same. Heart feels like it's fluttering and then I feel the need to cough, which makes the fluttering stop. It may do it agian, but doesn't seem to happen more than three times in a row. I am currently (2012) age 45 and have had this for years, usually at rest. Had a heart monitor on for a couple of weeks, but it never showed anything. Dr. did heart test after I had a gall bladder attack, but when I went in for gall bladder surgery, they re-did the test and said the first was a false positive. It happened out of nowhere. Went to Cardiologist after that, and he said there was no problem. Years ago I had thyroid test that showed nothing out of the ordinary, but just as we now know the earth is not flat, I believe so too will thyroid test improve and show how much our thyroid actually is affected. I have been hypoglycemic since a child and now diabetic as of last year, so maybe the meds I'm taking will improve the problems. Much like Keith, I felt my heart stop while sitting and watching TV as a child, my breath stopped and then heart started back up again.
