heartbeat in ear

I have a heart beat sound in my right ear that I can feel pulsating at times. It started as a whooshing sound so I went to my family Dr. that said it was an ear infection. He gave me an antibiotic after it only got worse and turned into a heart beat sound that I can hear at night. I went to an ent and a neurosurgeon who sent me for a cat scan and even a cerebral angiogram which also came back negative. This drives me crazy!

I think I have the same problem. It started about 2 days ago. My right ear was aching all day, I went to bed that night and woke up to hearing my heartbeat in my left ear. It does ache and the heartbeat gets faster when I move around a lot. I've also been shorter on breath more than usual too. I don't know if this could be related to my medication, I'm taking Welbutrin XL 300 mg or my asthma. I also have allergies. I tried plugging my nose and trying to breath out. It relieved the noise a lot but when I let go it was back. I want this to go away. I can hardly hear anything. It's bad enough that my right ear gets plugged all the time due to a bike accident I was in and I ruptured the ear drum. Does anyone know if taking IB profen, anti-flammatories, will work? At least temporarily? Thanks!
I have been suffering with this for some time now. initially it was'nt so bad but now it is taking over, effecting all aspects of my life. Work, relationships, everything mainly because of sleep deprivation. My first doctors appointment was a complete waste of time, he didnt have a clue - told me to get sinutab! the second the same - supplied with with antibiotics. 3rd doctor (substitute for the day) referred me to ENT which I have now been to on 2 differant occasions. General consenus was a plane journey - maybe but why did this not start until 3 weeks after the trip. I have just now discovered a tablet which i have been taking for acne - Tetralysal can cause tinnitus. Of course my doctor didnt tell me this and did not put the two things together on any of the occasions I went to him. Just a suggestion for others who may not have thought of consistent medication being the cause.
hey everyone, really interesting readin all your posts!! it's been like this for a few days now, thumping thumping thumping!!! Not all the time, jusy every now and again, when i sit down and try and consentrate on something!! it's driving me insane, i don't know how you guys have survived this! :-( I'm going to call the doctor tomoro cos i needed to him a doctor anyway and i get ear infections pretty easily.. so if theres any chance it oculd be that i wanna know sooner rather than later!!! hope your all ok!! take care, abi :-)
I have had the same loud beating in my right ear now for a year, I have been to all the dr.'s & have had all the tests, all show nothing & not even an ear specialist knows what it is. He told me "You have to learn to live with it " !! Thanks a lot ! I wished he would get it in BOTH ears ! :-S

I too have a heart beat sound in my right ear that started 2 months ago and it is very loud and driving me crazy. At first I thought it might be an impacted wisdom tooth I had, so I had it removed. That did not help. Then I went to my family doctor to see if I had wax build up causing pressure in my ear. No wax! However, he ran many tests on me and found that I was extremely anemic and set me up with an appointment with a Hematologist. I went home and did some research online and found that heavy monthly periods can cause women to become anemic from too much blood loss. So I informed him that I had this problem and now I have an appointment with my obgyn to see if we can fix the excessive bleeding problem. He also gave me some prescription Iron pills and did some further blood work which I am awaiting the results for now. He said that the heart beat in my ear is caused from my body's lack of oxgygen and that the artery near my ear canal is having to work much harder and that is why I'm hearing it. He seems to think it will clear up once my blood levels are back to normal. Anyway, I didn't see anything so far on this site about being anemic causing the heartbeat in the ear, so I thought I'd pass that along. If it does go away, I'll come back and let you know. Good Luck! I know how you feel...this is driving me crazy too!Lori
I have also suffered from Pulsatile tinnitus for quite some time , have had 3 mri/ mra over past 6 mos, everything is normal. I recently found out that I have a condition called thoracic outlet syndrome, my subclavian artery is slightly compressed causing a bruit that can resonate up the carotid artery the turbulent blood flow becomes more noticable in quiet enviroments or strenuos excersize , it can also be caused by fluid behind the eardrum. the petrous portion of the carotid artery runs right behind the eardrum and sometimes can be heard, Aneurysms of the petrous carotid are very rare, presentation of ICAA with Pulsatile Tinnitus is also very rare with few documented cases. I would still get checked out to rule out anything serious. Most of the time patients notice the noise after a cold or ear infection, it is common in swimmer ear, example i accidentally perforated my eardrum( the whooshing becomes more noticable when i use antibiotic ear drops) this is caused by the fluid running behind the eardrum, there are tiny vessles in the ear that can also be heard if inflamed ir infection is present, if ear wax builds up in the ear and becomesimpacted tis can also cause a whooshing soumd.
I have had the wooshing in the ears since I was little, (3-4 years old). I never had it loud enough to throw me off during the day, and after asking the doctors... I just found comfort in it after awhile and slept at nights. In my teen years I often would hear a sucking noise at the base of my skull, just release tension and let this thicker than water fluidy high pressure bubbly noise drain into my spine... My brilliant psychiatrist had suggested to me it maybe spinal fluids.... Dang I felt like saying "Yep, Here's Your Sign" I originally started going to a psychiatrist because I told my doctor (when I was about 33) that I had zapping noise near the base and the back of my skull. We chatted for a while, and he suggested that i maybe depressed and should see a psychiatrist. At the time I was going threw the hell of losing money due to a knee operation, and then finding out the operation didn't help and I could not do my job anymore. it snow balls bigger and bigger Any how I was originally put on a drug i can't recall the name for my "depression".... I immediately took violently sick to this medication, and they had changed me over to Effexor xr... Now it got read of the zapping noises within a week or two... (these zappping noises seemed to me an over amplification or sensitivity to light, and sound, and would get worse until I got away from the source).... I appreciated this very much, and the pills were also calming down my eye flashes that went hand and hand with the zapping noises. It did a great job of bringing me out of my depression to the point i would actually go out of the house and do stuff. I figured it was the wonder cure, and it did all right by me. Now I get a new Psychiatrist about a year and a half later, and he suggests "welbutrin" would help me out and tells me to take it with the effexor. I shake my head like a good boy, and everything seems well. I come back to see my psychiatrist a year later.... and I have a new Psychiatrist waiting for me, and this kinda sets me on edge. I told her things are going well with the wellbutryn and effexor xr... she immediately stops me and tells me to stop taking welbutrin as it countereffects the effexor.... ok... I was kinda surprised she didn't realize i was on welbutrin and it should have been in my reports..... then it hits me... she didn't even look or care to remember.... In my mind I was furious and I left about 12 mins later when she said our appointment was over. I went home to look up the wellbutrin effexor xr cross effects up to see if i would grow any new body parts or anything.... when i come across a petition on the net from 12360 people asking that wyeth whoever should tell people of the effects of effexor. I chuckled to myself and said the effects are it works.... THEN The scary part, i started reading the petition. People complaining of zapping noises in there head... after they quit... if they quit. People are in agony trying to withdraw from effexor, with wild and not so mild side effects... I said to myself, hey I definitly got to get off of this drug, i have took it for over 2 years. Guess what the whooshing, the zapping, the draining, the paranoia, the antisocialistic feel is all back within 24 hrs of taking my last pill and quitting. Yeehaw. today is 4 days later and now i am throwing up without 1/2 seconds notice, I still have the old bad symptoms of "depression".... but I quit the drugs... No more effexor, wellbutrin, or larazepam... and in my heart i think due to all my studying i think alot of this was originally brought on by thyroid.... sorry about the long haul, but it is a nice case to look at, and if i can help anyone at all lemme know at: ******** (no spaces) and if you can help me contact me... i will gladly share and take on life info\ \\ Thanks Trav **this post is edited by moderator *** *** private e-mails not allowed ** Please read our Terms of Use
I have two ear infections at the moment. Almost a week a go, my doc. prescribed something to take for ten days. My right ear (which hurt first) I think is starting to heal. My left ear though, is still bugging me. Hopefully it will get better. The other day, anf for a couple of days, both of my ears have been ringing so loud that I could not stand it. Luckily, now only one of them is. Recently I have also been hearing my heart beat also. What has helped me is listening to music. The ringing is still constantly there, but the music drowns it out. I can tell that my right ear is healing because it is always popping. I have a lot of hope for my right ear though.
I too am having problems with a pulsing sensation in my right ear starting about two weeks ago. It sometimes wakes me up at night or prevents me from falling asleep. From what I have read there are many many possible causes and lots of people go undiagnosed. As for me I am still waiting on my MRI/MRA results. The thing that I have found most helpful is keeping busy and drowning out the noise with some other sound such as a radio or leaving the tv on at night to fall asleep to. Sometimes this will help if the pulsing is not very loud. UNfortunately mine has gotten louder and more persistant lately and it is something I continue to struggle with. For those of you who have had this for years and are coping I am hopeful that I will be able to do the same (sure hope it goes away though!). The person who described changing the sound by putting pressure on his/her neck, this sounds like a "venous hum" look it up on the web, you will find lots of info on pulsatile tinnitus (sometimes more than you want to know!) And make sure your doctor knows about this and be very specific when you describe your symptoms. Hope this helps somebody out there!
Hi , Not sure this will help anyone.I went to three doctors including two ent specialist.Their findings were no ear infection ,no inner ear problems but the fact that I lost 30 pounds in two months had something to do with it according to one specialist. Its a condition that people get when they have lost or gained weight really fast, even ten pounds. Its called Patulous eustacain Tube. Its when you lose or gain padding in your inner ear that causes the ear drum to be closer to your arteries thus hearing the sound of your heartbeat in your ear. Also I have tmj with shifts the muscles of the nerves, tissue ,and arteries closer inside your inner ear causing the sound of your arteries to be more prevailent.I have had all the scans and all the test you can run.I have read that 40 percent of the world suffers from regular tinnitus..which are noises in the head such as whinning, high pitched squealing and machinery noises even my wife hears music,Which when she told me I thought she might be a little nuts but the found it on a site on the internet that says that some people hear music but most hear the inner most workings of the body.I have a friend that can detect high powered power lines from miles away and which direction they are in.It causes him major pain in the ears..So guess its not that uncommon.Getting back to what I was saying 40 percent suffer normal tinnitus which I have for over twenty years 17 percent of the world hear their pulse like we do and 7 percent of those are found with idioipathic symptoms are unknown causes. My doctor found nothing vasular wrong with me and asked me if I could live with it and I told him ,if I have lived with other noises for over 20 years I suppose I can learn to shut this out too..He said they could do invasive surgery if I just wanted them to ,possibly to find the cause but the surgery is more dangerous and can cause more damage than the sound can cause. What im saying is that in most cases you wont find the cause .It has been known to disappear as quickly as it came even after years.I hope mine doesn't but knowing that I have been checked out it makes me not worry so much..I hope this helps someone that reads this. Before going to the doctor I became depressed and started becoming more anxious almost to panic attack status..I read so many horrible things that I just knew it was..Which turned out that it wasn't ..Just try to live with the noise and ignore it..Your brain will one day just start ignoring it just like your eyes do when you look at your nose..You don't see it but if you look for it..its there..I have also talked with three other people that said even after a year, five years and also three years theirs just disappeared... That was very helpful. I have the same thing. I went and got my MRI done and of course, thought I had a tumor or something but the tests came back normal. I lost about 20 pounds in the last few months and this is what it is. Best advice: Try to ignore it and when sleeping, sleep on your ear that has the pulsating sound it will help you sleep. If this does not work sleep with a pillow or a blanket tucked in by your neck and ear.
Over a month ago, I started to hear and kind of feel my pulse in my left ear. It kept getting louder every day. I got a little relief by holding my nose and breathing out, but that only worked for about 5 minutes. My doctor ordered an ulrasound (which showed absolutely no plaque buildup in my carotid artery.) My blood pressure fluctuates but is good overall. He also ordered a catscan and an MRI (I won't get the results until next week.) Friday, I told my chiropractor about it. He adjusted my spine near the top (C2?) and told me to take Emergen-C. I drank one packet in a glass of water that day, Saturday and today. Friday night and last night, I slept at least 8 hours. Yesterday, I drank a pot of Throat Care tea with honey before bed. This morning, I woke up and realized I couldn't hear the pulse any more. I highly recommend a visit to a chiropractor! :-)
I have it too. I had it about three years ago and it went away on its own. Now it is worse. Keeps me up at night. Mine is in the left ear. I have been having a little bit of nasal drainage, I don't know if it is connected, but I also have a little bit of high blood pressure. I don't notice it during the day because of background noise, only in bed. Sometimes one side or the other will alleviate it, others nothing does. I have appt. in Jan. w/ ENT.
i have something very similar...but its when i lay down at night to go to sleep...if anything is within about half an inch of my ear i can feel/hear my heartbeat...and it makes it difficult to sleep...it started about a month ago and i decided to research it...when i lay on my back its fine and all through the day its fine...only when my ear is pressed against my pillow/my arm/the bed or is really close to one of them is the only i can hear it...im going to the doctors and ill return with an update within the next week or so
I have also had the pulsing in my right ear, I have gone for the artery ultrasound which proved no blockage, I also went for the hearing test which proved no problem and I also went to see an ENT. I was placed on meds for a short time and found that it was not eliminating the problem. This pulsing in my ear has no pain associated with it but it is annoying to say the least. I have been experiencing this for almost four months now and was told it is pulsatile tinnitus. I am in my fifties and awoke one day with this after I a previous root canal two months before. I was told this does not have a bearing on my ear problem but I thought I would mention this because it was the pain in my jaw (experienced this pain after the root canal) that appeared one day and than the next day it was gone leaving me with the pulsing ear problem which never ended. I have just learned to live with this during the day, which is not bad because of the outside sound but at night it is a problem. I am still looking for answers but have found none.
