I am a 17 year old girl who was just told a couple of days ago I had bells palsy. My worst fear is not knowing how long I will be stuck with it. It's hard because I'm truthfully not use to looking so different. I kept asking myself, why me. Not too long before this the doctor told me I was hypoglycemic. I just realized God made me the way I am and people should look at me no differently. I pray everyday it goes away soon. Like I said I'm a pretty young woman who's face has dramatically changed but I am the same person. I'm going to learn to live with it as long as I have to. I am on 4 different medicines, but im in the same boat as you. Yes I'm scared but I know I'm alright.

I'm a little curious about how long this condition last too, about 4 weeks ago I was diagnosed with Bells Palsy and I took all the antiviral pills, I've been on a heavy dose of prednisone(steroids) as well, and I'm still on them but I was feeling totally back to normal the last week or so and still continued with my pills but then all of a sudden yesterday I started to feel funny in my face again and its getting worse as the days go on now...I didn't think it would reoccur while I was on the meds, is it normal for it to get better then worse again???  I've read a lot on this subject but it doesn't seem to really touch on what my questions are...maybe to hear other peoples experience with it would help me to know what to expect cause I've never experineced anything like this in my life and I just really want it to go away...if anyone has any answers I'd love to hear them!  Thanks to whoever reads this!

It will go away. I have had this twice. For me it is the herpes virus. I get some sort of break out whenever I get very stressed or sick. If I get sunburned I will develop a fever blister. Herpes lives in your nervous system and can present it's self in many ways. Generally affecting the same nervs over and over when it travels. Meaning if you get fever blisters they usually pop up in the same place, same with shingles. Bells palsy affects the nerves on either side of the face. As a general rule it will take twice as long to get better as it did to get to it's worst. You may have sore lymph nodes and feel achy. The prednisone is to give your body a boost in it's own immune system to battle this virus. Antiviral meds will help but this virus has to run it's time out. Stressing over it will make it last longer!!!!! The longer it lasts and the more times it reoccurs the chance of permanent damage increases. You may be left with a droopy eye or crooked smile. This fades over time but when i smile really big I still have a slight higher right side. This isn't very not very noticeable but is still there. I am 45 and I now keep Valtrex on hand at all times. I know when it's gona flair and can usually ward it off before it becomes a problem.

I realised that with every sickness and disease you have to be calm and positive. I had it for 4 weeks, I took prednisone and also went for a physio.  To top it up I gave all to God who healed my soul first and it was easy for me to gradually heal without stress.  Recite on the word of God daily and you'll  receive deliverance even before you know it.  Be blessed and receive your healing through Christ who died on the cross for us. By his stripes we are healed.

I got bells palsy on 1/21/2011. I woke up with every syndrome of bells. I took steroid for  7 days and anti-viral for 7 days. My right face looked worse on the seventh day than the first day of onset. So my neurologist gave me 4 more days of steroid. I started acupuncture right from the second week, accompanied with hot patch, and facial exercises. My face started to get better from beginning of March. The swollen got reduced; my right eye lid could close mostly; I can drink from a cup; the taste came back; I could pronounce b,p,m,f better and clearer. But I still could fill the numbness and tightness on my right face. My face was still in pain, and the pain moved from right ear towards to nose slowly.

In the mid-May, I felt my face recovery went backwards. Before, my lips moved to left side when smiled or talked. In mid-May, my face shifted to right side. I felt like there was a big snapper pulling my face to the right side. Before, my right eye was larger than my left eye because of drooping. In mid-May, my right eye became smaller than left eye, and right eye looks higher than left one. So I changed to another acupuncture doctor. He gave me 8 treatments, and I felt my face a lot loose.

At the moment of writing, it is 8/11. It has been six and half month. I still can feel the tightness when I am tired. When I closed my lips tightly, only my right eye closed; when I yarn, only my right eye closed; My lips are noticeable uneven when I laugh big, small smile is fine. I am still hoping my face will be totally back to what I was one day.

I had bell's palsy like 10 years ago. Even though I recover about 75% I still can't smile completely. I wish I could rested more after the onset, seen the doctor earlier. You will recover but take plenty of rest. Like any other injury a person must rest. With bell's palsy it is the same a nerve was injured and it needs time, rest, food, to heal!! Good luck my friend and take plenty of rest

I'm now at 3.5 months. Still can't smile or flare my nostril but this week my affected eyebrow moves a little when I try to furrow my brow I was hoping mine would be gone at 3months but that wasn't to be. Does it mean I won't ever fully recover? Did anyone here make good recovery after 3 months? Thanks for any replies in advance. The not knowing for me is that hard bit. I worry I'll be one of the few who never recover

GC, you will be fine. I was like you, barely seeing recovery from palsy after 3 months since onset. Almost a year past, I am 90% back. Keep taking Vintamin B family, good rest, face massage, positive attitude...You will be good.

So Iv had bells pasly for 16 days and im trying everything to get better, steroids, teas, massages, teas, Vitamin injections, Hot rice bags around my ear, gum & I even took a weeks off work to relax & nothing. I too work with customer & in a warehouse, so I had eye issues for the first week but Im feeling better I can almost close my eye, but other then that no improvement. I still refusing to go out to social gatherings because i cant smile & I laugh at almost everything, I think thats the hardest part I am 29 years old & i was really in to the whole club seen. I actually got bell pasly while at a club but i didn't notice it until the next day totally freaked out. Iv only had it for 16 days & god only know how many more days ill have it for, & thats if it even goes away but iv been really positive that it will go away, they say your mind is a powerful tool, they weren't playing, but I guess at the end the only thing there is to do is stay positive and try anything to get better, Iv always said I try anything once, maybe that what got me here, but then again maybe it will get me out too... ;)
