you can not loss weight on paxil. it is like a crinked hose as one doctor explained it. it stops your metabolism. 90% of people on paxil gain a significant amount of weight. i gained 40 poinds from it and now am off it due to the weightgain before it gets worse or damages my metabolism to no return

no wonder thee are so many over weight people int he world today! it is from antidepressants! kinda defeats the porpuse of taking an antidepressant if you are going to depressed more because they make you fat! if paxil didnt cause weight gain it would be a great drug!

I was a victim of this nasty side effect so I thought I would share my experience.
When I was put on Paxil I was in the best shape of my life and only 25 years old! I had some stress and the Doctor prescribed heavy doses of Paxil. In 2 months my clothes did not recognize me anymore! The doctor noticed but kept quiet. It was not until I hit 200 lbs that my mother thought that MAYBE the pills were to blame and yes they were but the doctor said "it is better to be fat than crazy"....
I was given one antidepressants after another but my weight did not drop. After 7 years of changing medication and not losing weight I went to a homeopath and he helped me get off ALL antidepressants and helped me restart my metabolism. I have been off the medication for 8 months and with alot of courage, and hours at the gym I have lost 13 kgs, but I gained 40 kg on the medication! Some days I feel so bad, but I know I am not alone! There must be laws stating the doctors must inform patients about any possible side effects.
Do not let other Doctors tell you that you are imagining things...paxil DOES make you gain ALOT of weight!
Now I will head the the gym *laugh*. Best of luck to everyone

I'm really glad you pointed this out. I don't think that a lot of doctors realize that it can happen so I'm glad that you pointed out that it does and to make sure that you clarify with the doctor as to what you'd like to do. I personally think that therapy is good to go into instead of taking antidepressants since both work equally well but one's much less likely to cause serious weight gain. What do you think?

I've been on Paxil for 3 months now and I've gained 15lbs. I did some research and discovered that paxil will inhibit leptin, which controls appetite and fat storage. The easiest solution involves taking omega 3 capsules along with vitamin E. These help regulate leptin. I'm planning on taking these supplements. good luck

Will you please tell me what side effects you are experiencing?
Did you suffer from any side effects besides weight gain while taking Paxil?
I too have been taking Paxil for years and wonder if it is the reason for some of the health issues I am faced with on a daily basis.
Thank you for your response.

i was on paxil for almost three 3 yrs. during that time i was also on seroquel, both of which kill your metabolism and cause weight gain, i went from 110lbs to almost 300 in those 3 yrs. ive recently gone off the meds, and have lost around 25 lbs in the last month. so i wouldnt recommend going on it. try zoloft, its a weight neutral drug.

stay away from paxil...it is not worth it! I gained 30 pounds, and had all kinds of side effects. if you miss a dose you will feel it...it feels like someone is zapping you with a lightning bolt....makes you real thirsty. hot sweats cold sweats, trimmers, itching, flu like symptoms. do your research...I was on it for 10 yrs.....was a nightmare to get off of this med.....your body and mind will change....

I am so glad I have read all of these posts! I have been depressed lately and have been thinking that I needed some help. I have started exercising like crazy and it seems to be finally helping after a couple months, but I still cry at least once a day. I had my doctor give me a prescription and they chose Paxil. I haven't taken it yet - and now I don't think I'm going to! Think I'll stick to exercise and trying to get through. Thanks so much all of you for all of your stories. Thank the Lord for the Internet!

I am really glad to hear that you're going to stick to exercise because it definitely can help your mood. I went off Paxil with no trouble but that's not the case for everyone. Can you let us know how ou're doing?

I just came across your article on the net. I've been taking Paxil for several years now, I know that it has helped me with my social anxiety, but I have gained quite a bit of weight on it....even though I work out regularly 3 times a week doing 30 minute cardio on elliptical and then an hour long weight training and strengthening class. I have tried to taper off of Paxil, but had extreme withdrawal symptoms...to the point of being crippled by them. I ended up going back on the Paxil just to continue with my life at work and at home. My doctor doesn't believe that I was suffering from withdrawal, seeing as how none of the Paxil drug representatives ever mentioned (to him) anything about withdrawal or discontinuation symptoms being a problem. He decided that my social anxiety had come back with a vengeance and prescribed that I double my usual dose of Paxil. AND he doesn't believe that my weight gain is totally because of taking Paxil. I need help coming off this drug , but I can't take the withdrawal !!!!!! I have to keep functioning as full time mother, full time housewife, and full time at my job. I have no one to pick up the slack for me for when I'm all messed up, going through withdrawal. What can I do?
I am going to try the previous suggestion to take the omega 3 and the vitamin E to regulate Leptin in my system. If that helps, I'll be alright.
