I'm a female who was born with three kidneys, two were normal and the third was small and it's ureter didn't go to my bladder. Instead, it bypassed it and went out somewhere down there by my urethra. The result was constant uncontrolled slow urine flow from the third kidney which caused a constant severe rash (diaper rash) for unknown reasons. Finally, nearly at age 10, I was diagnosed by a doctor who investigated this thoroughly enough to figure out what the problem was and I had the third kidney removed. Dry for the first time in my life. It has been a traumatic adulthood and sexuality with dealing with the childhood stresses and well established ways I developed (i.e. neuroses) to hide my shame and embarrassment. Has anyone else had a similar third kidney whose urine bypassed your bladder?

I have 3 kidneys and my dad had kidney cancer and had one kidney removed. Although the family was comforted by the fact that I had 3 kidneys (actually I have a twin kidney on the left where 2 complete kidney systems are together in one kidney that shoots our a third ureter and on the right I have a regular and a partial, I guess that sound like 3 1/2). Truthfully the doctors said that it is too complicated to use, and might not take at all... So not so much as being a proud owner of 3 kidneys... as you put it. There is much more to it and each person has a different complicated scenario.

I have one pelvic badly deformed kidney sitting very low in my pelvis. I carry a symptomatic infections until I am urinating blood. Never run fevers nor did my mother or 7 sisters. My son passed from a kidney disease and my sister was born with 3 normally functioning kidneys. Don't do anything without seeing the best doctors available. I am now 64 years of age and am now having increased difficulties. Two days ago another sister was diagnosed with kidney cancer. Please, if possible get to a teaching hospital. It is only now with the advanced testing that they have got a good understanding of my problems and they are serious. Thank God I can afford the best medical care. Unfortunately that is not the case with my sisters one of whom I've already lost.

I was born with a third kidney, but it was dying by the time I was born so I had to get surgery to get it removed at around 6-8 months old.

Keep yourself especially your feet extra arm always. I used to as well till my Dr told me to do this. And I haven't had a kidney infection in almost 10 years now. Where as I used to get them at least 10 times a year.

Hi Lisa, you are me all over again except, I had a ureter joining two of my kidneys together and a separate one joining those two to my bladder. I had level V reflux, spent most of my life on antibiotics, in and out of hospital and half dead. At 42 I found a young urologist who agreed to remove the offensive little piece of c**p that was killing me. That was in 2001, since then I have had only 1 kidney infection and maybe 2 or 3 bladder infections

hi,
two months ago, i did a kidney stone surgery. The doctor told me that i have three kidneys! 2 on the right side with two different tubes attached to the bladder and one on the left side. Three are functional well but the third on the right is somehow smaller than original. i was shocked when i knew that i have three kidneys but the doctor told as soon as three of them are functioning well no need to be worried. i drink alot of water like a camel! i am always thirsty. i pee normally as any other person, but the amount of water i drink per day is too much comparing to others and it becomes a habit to drink such amount of water. Sometimes i feel the pain like needles from the right kidneys maybe because of kidney stones and i always have high uric acid. Honestly, i am not giving it much attention as long as i am fine. I am now 36 years old.

I'm a 48year old female, I was born with three separate kidneys all of which are now fully functional, I can't say it's always been easy.
I was told at 18years old I should have the extra one removed, after having over 20 attacks of chronic kidney infections in one year, I refused and I'm glad I did.
30years later and a nutritionist later I understand how to look after my kidney function.
A. Drink 2 ltr's of water per day, only warn water after 7pm at night
B. A maximum of 4-6 units of alcohol per week, but avoid if you can
C. Eat a good balanced diet, watch your citrus intake too much can cause kidney discomfort
D. Try keep stress to a minimum, not always easy
E. Do not do too much strenuous excercise
F. Get enough sleep otherwise you leave yourself open to fatigue, not good for the kidneys.
I had a new scan and the radiologist was quite surprised to find a fully functioning third distinct kidney with all the extras you would normally have with a standard kidney.
Good luck to everyone with a third kidney

I also have 3 kidneys. Multiple kidneys is not all that uncommon. I've encountered a number of people with them. In fact a PA I know has a mother with 6. Multiple externals parts would be fingers and toes. Internal is kidneys. Mine do process a number of things differently for example I've broken numerous bones and did a 24 hr urine test to find out that calcium is eliminated faster and also had a MRSA infection with IV of Vancomycin which didn't reach therapeutic levels because of my 3 kidneys. They work too well !!

All the women in my family have a third kidney. Most are working fine. My mother also had a third that never gave her problems. Although it may be rare all 5 of us girls have it yet none of the brothers.
