This sounds exactly like a pinched nerve in the neck which will cause sharp pain near the left shoulder blade and sometimes an aching or numbness running down the left arm and into the fingertips. This happened to me from biking in the aero position on pretty long rides (30-50 miles) -- my head being tilted up for prolonged periods crushed the nerve -- what you need is PT and to stop putting your head into positions where it is tilted back. Nerves take a long time to heal (probably will need at least 4-6 weeks of PT). Good luck.
I was involved in a car accident 05/2006. I have a disc herniation at c-7/t-1 that I suffered as a result. I developed an area around my left shoulder blade that is constantly numb and tingley. Something else has developed in the last six (6) months, a lump. The lump is about the size of a golf ball and is at the bottom inside edge of my shoulder blade with part of it actually underneath.
I have been somewhat concerned, but I don't know if they are related, that I have also had recent problems with swollen lymph glands in my neck. In addition I have enlarged glands at the base of my tongue that make it hard to swallow at times ( I also have a popping sensation when I swallow since developing swollen glands).
I have been to two ENT's who've said that they see the glands, but they don't appear "bad enough" to cause concern yet. It's the 'yet' that both dr's have said that bothers me. I know that this type of surgical removal is messy for someone my age. I am still concerned though.

Why trust a physician when you've got a physical therapist?
I am currently..as in...RIGHT NOW...experiencing severe upper back pain that is located right under my left shoulder blade. It started last week, I believe it started because, I was lying on my right side on the floor up on my right elbow...which means my left side was bent kind of severely...then a startling knock at the door caused me to jump and twist quickly which is where I THINK the problem began. A few minutes after I got up I got a SHARP stabbing pain under my left shoulder blade, so bad that I had to stop and take short breaths because it actually hurt to breathe and the pain had a "shooting" sensation. Well, after sitting still for a long time, using heating pads and taking a really REALLY hot shower, it got better over the next few days. This morning I was doing the "twist" w/my daughter and right after I was done, the pain came back DOUBLE time. I think I may have damaged that muscle. In the past 10 years I have had sporadic times where I would get the same sort of pain, but it would always go away right away. So, I'm not sure why it's lingering like it is now, but I turned 30 a few weeks ago and I'm afraid it might be age. Yes, I'm still young, but I don't think I repair as easily any more. I also sleep on an air mattress because we are inthe process of moving and I don't think tha helps. This reallllly hurts. Ugh.
I've been suffering with pain under my left shoulder blade for about 2 weeks now. I am shocked to see that so many other people have the same symptoms as I am having. I can't remember anything that happened to my shoulder that would cause this pain. My only thought of something being out of the ordinary was about 3 weeks ago, I told my husband that I had a pain under my shoulder blade that literally hurt all the way through to the front side of my body. The pain stopped for several days, then came back as this annoying throb that feels like a mixture of a strain and pleurisy. Deep breaths or sneezes send me into over loads of pain. I actually found this website while looking for some type of exercises I might do to relieve the pain. Everyone tells me that I have a muscle strain, but my reply is always the same, "it feels like my shoulder blade seperates from my back". I keep thinking that it will get better, that I won't have to go to the doctor... after reading these posts I'm thinking that I'm wrong. I suppose that I just want to get my name on the list in the even someone gets a successful diagnosis that actually stops the pain. I just know that I'm not a pill taker.. in fact up until now a single asprin would cure any ache I've ever had....now I'm taking max doses of over the counter pain meds and the pain doesn't budge. From someone who has encountered the same symptoms I certainly hope you all get some relief soon...I can't imagine 6 years of this pain, as one of you mentioned.
I had the same pain under my right shoulder blade and it radiated into my chest. I was finally diagnosed with gallstones and had my gallbladder removed. The pain is still there on occasion but nothing like it used to be. I now wonder if it could be my pancreas. I know gallstones can lead to pancreatitis. I will get that checked soon. Anyone else with this problem?
I'm so happy I'm not alone! I'm not happy you are all in pain, but I have dealth with this stabbing pain under my shoulder blade for two years now, and I thought I was the only one. I now realize we just all suffer silently!
Hi all i just wanted to share with you all that i had this unbearable pain in my left shoulder blade. It was for about 3 weeks but i went and see my Chiropractor and that did the trick.I now have hardly little or no pain there any more.So if you don,t have a good Chiro,go and see DR David Weyrauch in Toronto Ph #416 226-4950.Im telling you the pain that i had was just as bad as you all say.I feel for you all,but do yourself a favor and see a good chiro.
Im 21 years old. Its been about 6 weeks now, and I'm still experiencing the same shoulder pain. I also didnt do any heavy lifting or any repetitive work outs. The pain is the worst in the morning. It always wakes me up. I caint stand it no more.
i am 41 years old and have been suffering for a year. i went to a rheumatologists/nuerologists/5 e.r. visits and an orthopedic dr./ my neck also goes numd and chest hurts when it is real bad from breathing.or just shooting pains in chest cavity.
i have found that laying on a heating almost instantly gets rid of the chest pain and helps the breathing. heat heat heat is defineatly the answer/ there are also specific back excercises for the shoulder blades and neck you can ask your dr about..they are painful at first, but help alot with how often the pain comes and goes. defineatly invest in a heating pad. you will not regret it. also i am a waitress, and when pain is bad. i buy the therapudic heat wraps that stick on your body, they are very inexpensive, and they really do work for about 8 to 9 hours. what a great help to be active and have a warm shoulder and neck, which releaves so much pain.

for those of you having pains under the shoulder blade or near the shoulder blade, maybe under neath or just aching pain across the upper back, having somebody step on your back and making it crack all the way through but gently will help with this pain. im 27 and weight lift and have this pain from time to time, it just sorta pops up every once in a blue moon and i have never strained myself to the point of of any pain or injury, just sore muscles. im am just making a guess here but i want to say its caused by tension. ive never had a good posture its not exactly bad but you know what i mean..but sometimes if i make the wrong movements or flex the wrong wayor whatever it be the pain will occure. i have my wife who is probably about 135-140 step on my back with all her weight and it cracks loud but it FEELS SOO RIGHT it causes a natural high it feels so good XD the relief is just great from it. shortly after the pain is wearing away and gone. hope this helps some of you
I am glad to know that I am not alone. Same exact story. Noticed a pain directly to the right and underneath left shoulder blade. Hurts only when I breathe in deep or sneeze, I can left weights though and do fairly normal activity without any trouble. Went to chiro and was adjusted, did nothing. Went to sports medicine doctor, suggested ct scan. Too scared to go. Has anyone found anything that takes all of the pain away?????
I too have been having these problems I am a 26 male and about 3 years ago it began. it got so bad at once all i could do is go to the doctors 10 dr appointments and 15 chiropractic appointments later i still had the pain (and allot of drugs) i was talking to a friend who was a massage therapist and she did something called trigger points, which basically is pushing out the kind of knots out it took going a couple of times but it really worked after that i have been working on strengthen my back and neck, i still do get the pains usually brought on by laying on my arm or something but with my stretches and back and neck exercise it goes away and is not nearly severe. I hope this helps
Hi everyone, im sorry that so many of you suffer from this mysterious condition. I myself are experiencing the same sympotoms, but before you toss me over because you have read so many similar stories, please hear me out. I am suffering from the exact came condition, in/on/under the left shoulder blade. It hurts to breathe, and although it had only been about 10days i do feel that it is getting worse.
I am a studying student studying to be a physiotherapist, and just want to ask all of you which shoulder blade you are having trouble with, and if you are left of right handed. If my theory is correct i believe that there is a connection between the two,
I hope that i can be of assistance to all of you, so please HAVE HOPE, Even if its false, its better than none at all.
1. What shoulder is the problem, and
2. If you are left or right handed.
Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

I have the same issue. (Triathlon). It's likely bursitis. There are bursa that allow the scapula to float over the rib cage and for the muscles to move smoothly. RICE it. Alternatively it could be nerve impingement which means proper bike fit is key.
