I'm a 20 year old girl with really strong pain between my shoulder blade and spine. I can't sit up strait, or sit back. Any pressure on my left shoulder makes the pain worse. The pain come and goes but when it comes, I can't move. I've been to the ciropracter a number of times and it never seems to help. I do have a mild Scoliosis. Should i be worried? Could it be anything severe? Any thoughts?

I have had similiar symptoms and I found out I had thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) and had surgery a year ago. I found out that it can be a common problem with cyclists because of the positioning on the bike. With my luck, I also had an extra rib that was obstructing the area. I am not fully better, but I am on the road to recovery and beginning to cycle again. I have had the symptoms for years, and it took a major flare up of all symptoms at once and excruciating pain to find out what was wrong. Doctors did not have an answer and for years have told me it was poor posture (I have good posture), pinched nerves, or too much exercising. It was my new chiropractor at the time that put all of my symptoms together (neck pain, sharp pain below shoulder blade, swollen red arm and hand) for me to find out what was wrong. With his help,  I guided my primary care to write me a referral to a thoracic surgeon to be evaluated. Turns out, I was a pretty significant case. My doctor has expressed that he will be using my images for educational purposes. There is not a lot of research out there on TOS, but it may be worth looking into.

I have also, like many of the posts on here, had similar back pain.  Mine is basically under the shoulder blades and near my neck.  I had a bulging disc in my neck and while I went through physical therapy to help strengthen muscles...it didn't really help long term.  Now I have that same sharp, stabbing pain throughout my upper back.  The ONLY relief I get is by getting what is called "trigger point injections" every 4-6 weeks.  These are very similar to accupuncture.  The doctor feels for the knot and then puts a small needle in your muscle and works out the spasm.  After the procedure there is some soreness (almost like a workout) but it feels MUCH better than beforehand.  The actual procedure is pretty much painless with the worse case feeling like a sting.  The doctor thinks I need to stretch more to keep this from reoccuring (which I don't so that's on me) but I think most of my problems stem from my sleeping positions.  First and foremost do NOT sleep with your arms above your head...EVER.  That's the worse thing you can possibly do.  Sleeping on your back is probably ideal unless your head falls to one side.  Sleeping on your side is only good if you have a pillow for your knees (to keep your spine aligned) or a body pillow.  I have a body pillow but it's pretty deflated so it's kinda useless.  Sleeping on your stomach is horrible too unless you've found a way to do it face down.  I have considered the temperpedic (sp?) bed but that's an extreme cost and my current mattress is only like 2-3 years old.

So I'd encourage anyone experiencing this sharp, stabbing pain to look into trigger point injections and possibly have an MRI done.  Best of luck to all of you, I literally "feel your pain."

The same systems as everyone explains.  Severe pain below the left shoulder blade, nauseated all the time, can not do alot with my left arm.  It was not sore to the touch until last week I had my husband gently rub that area and th epain was so intense it dropped me to my knees and sweating, hot about to pass out.  I am still have pain with extreme sweating and so hot I feel like I cant breathe.  I have had x-rays, blood work for lupus, arthritis, no spots on my lungs, no blood clots and I have been on steroids, antibiotic, pain pills and muscle relaxers.  I am starting my 4 th week and every Monday I am back at the doctors.  I was having swelling in my hands but associated it with my painting furniture and sanding.  I have not been able to do any of that and still feel so sick and just hurt.  I stay at home all day and trying to not use the left side so that I can heal from what ever but still the same.  My doctor said pleurisy and that the fluid was pushing on my nerve endings so another medication was added for that.  OMG if another med is added or another week goes by I do not know what I will do.  Now my family is starting to question if I really am hurt or just depressed.  HELP

I just started having the same under my left shoulder blade pain.   When I breath it hurts, when I sneeze it hurts. When I wake up it feels like it hurts more.  I play drums and just started learning how to play bass, I'm also a chef.   I am left handed and use it way more than my right, it's like the right is just helping the left to do things.     I've tried massages, etc... doesn't work.     What a hell?????

Hi everyone, I've been following this topic for the last 5 months , I've had exactly to the " T " what everyone has on this thread. Last week I went to pick up something off the floor and while I was getting back up I felt my neck explode in the most horrible pain I have ever felt in my entire life. I couldn't move an inch. To cut to the chase , I have bone cancer. They started radiation on me and then chemo therapy for the rest of my life. LISTEN CAREFULLY everyone. I went to the doctors prior , chiropractor and they found nothing. It wasn't until my neck went to hell that the emergency room realized from my CT Scans that I had legions inside my bones with cancer. LISTEN CAREFULLY AGAIN , I had the same exact symptoms as all of you. Go to the doctors immediately and demand , do not ask , DEMAND a biopsy of your bone where it hurts. DEMAND! I got it early and some of you have it for years. Please go ASAP. At least have piece of mind that its not cancer.

Celiacs Disease will cause intense shoulder pain, usually around the left shoulder blade. Celiacs Disease is an intolerance to Gluten found in wheat, rye and oats. Lactose intolerance from Dairy products will cause pain too. Cut out all gluten products and dairy for 2 weeks and then slowly reintroduce them...this will ascertain if you have an intolerance.

Hi everyone, I have this shoulder problem as well I am 24 and a mum of three, It started in Oct of 2011, At first I thought I had slept funny but then its been on and off ever since, I went to the doctors numerous of times had blood tests, ultrasound on my pelvis ( ovarian cysts ) Which all came back fine nothing wrong and I am in perfect health. I have seen a chiropractor, but recently moved house and town so I told my new doctor and she prescribed me Ibelive gel, which doesnt really help only for about 15minutes or so.. She has also referred me to a physiotherapist which I hope he/she will help. I have also been suffering from anxiety from this condition as I have been worried it might be something serious my anxeity has gone up so much, But from seeing your posts I know I'm not alone :) I hope everyone of you have a great recovery because we all know how much this affects our lives, As for me with 3 children aged 7,3 and 1year It's hard somedays and somedays I am fine It is hard to rest my back and shoulders, I hope my physio helps also I might give acupuncture a go and see if that helps in anyway.

Thank you all again and I hope you all get this sorted and you are all free of pain soon, Kind regards...Samantha

All these symptoms have been starting in on me after work today, i work in a tee shirt printing factory, no heavy lifting, just enough movement to where i am not straining but CONSTANTLY barely extending my arms and back and slightly bending over, and the pain was not there till today when i did this in excess (moving about 2200 shirts individually off a press machine.

I've had this pain off and on for over 20 years. My chiropractor said it is a rib that pops out of place. Sometimes he can fix it within a few adjustments but other times it takes several times going everyday and it can easily pop right back out once its in its place. I am 37 now and the pain is getting a lot worse when it comes out. When its in I feel perfectly normal and can do anything. I am scared of surgery, if there is even some kind they can do and I refuse to take injections. It is hurting so bad today that at times it takes my breath away. I'm not looking forward to the chiropractor. I know it will take several adjustments this time and the first one always makes me cry from the pain. But when its in the pain goes away.
