I am having the same problem. I have had Mirena for 2 and a half years. I love not having to worry about birth control but I cannot lose weight. I was 128 before I got pregnant and now I am 138. I have a personal trainer and have been watching what I eat like crazy. I am thinking of having mine removed. I have no sex drive at all and am always in a bad mood.

I'm going through the same thing too. to the lady that asked if you take the IUD out, can you loose the weight? The answer is, yes you can. Before i had my second son I had to take that IUD out because of a UTI I weighed 215lbs. the few months I had the IUD out I lost 25lbs and was still loosing weight until we decided to have another child. I got back up during the pregnancy but lost most of it and was about 187 before i put the IUD back in. I still have it in and Im back up to 215 and not loosing or gaining weight... It is very frustrating.

I have had the Mirena IUD for about a year now. I got it around 7-8 weeks after having my son. After my son I lost 30 pounds right away and then after I had the Mirena inserted my weight loss came to a screaming hault. When I still had about 20 pounds more to lose. I have always been really good at losing weight. It was always so easy for me. For the longest time I didn't think it could be the IUD. For the past few months I have been going to the gym every day, barely eatting, only eatting healthy, taking vitamins, taking dance classes and work out classes, seeing a personal trainer every here and there, running, anything I could think of and I GAINED 15 pounds!!!! since I started this routine. It is sooo frustrating. My next gyno appointment is in a few weeks, I think I am going to get it removed then and see what happens. And maybe go on the pill afterwards, I never had a problem on the pill before but couldn't go back to it cause I was breastfeeding. Will let everyone know what happens when I get it removed.

It's been nice to not have to worry about getting prego or taking a pill......... however.....I guess I'm not alone with this whole IUD thing....I can't loose weight and I feel bloated all the time!!!! I got mine in after my daughter was born and that's been 4yrs now. I've gained 10lbs. I eat healthy and exercise often, but have maintained my lovely extra 10lbs. %-) I made my appointment to GET IT OUT!!! (i only have a yr left anyway).

Ladies, I have the Mirena and have lost 45 pounds in a couple months just watching
what I eat and working out at the gym and still losing. I just started the HCG diet from
Myfatcure.com and have lost 4 pounds already in two days!!! It is a 43 day plan or you
can do half that. Cost with shipping and handling is approx 84.99 and worth very penny.
I encourage you all who are trying to lose weight to do this. It is awesome!!!

I had surgery 5 months ago for endometriosis. It was pretty advanced so they decided to put an IUD in hopes of helping it from advancing futher. I eat extremely well and am a personal trainer and fitness instructor. I work out at least 6 days a week. In the 5 months since getting my IUD I have gained close to 10 pounds. Medically, I need the IUD for the endometriosis or the next step is a hysterectomy. I'm 30 years old with no kids, and no plan on having kids but am wondering if anyone has had any success in keeping the weight off with the IUD? I know a few people who have not experienced weight gain with the IUD. I guess all of our bodies are different and that we all react differently.

This site is very helpful. I was wondering why I was suddenly gaining weight despite 30 minutes of cycling everyday and reducing my food intake. Additionally, my acid reflux seems to no longer respond to my medication that was working prior to getting the mirena, and I look like I'm four months pregnant all the time. Like many others' experiences, no doctor fully disclosed these side-effects. I'm going to stick with it for six months to see if things get better, but it's good to know that I'm not alone if they don't and that removal will help.

I got the Mirena almost 3 months ago and have put on 5 lbs and had some breakouts. THat is after spending 5 months on Acutane! Bummer! I also gained 5 lbs while on the Acutane. I eat very healthy and excercise 1 hour per day. My breasts are bursting out of every bra and 2 brand new Victoria Secret bathing suits I bought last fall. It is embarrassing! I also gained an inch in my mid section. I think my butt is bigger but it was small to begin with so that is sorta ok. My clothes dont fit! I have only had one period but like others I feel bloated. I too am thinking of trying HCG and staying on the MIrena. Or remove it and have tubal ligation and ablasion. I have 2 beautiful kids and i am done!

I too, am a Mirena user. I was very excited after the 2nd baby to have this option. I work out everyday, and have increased my workout in the past month including 40 minutes of weights (every other day) and running 2 miles and biking 4 mi per day. I eat healthy and am between 1000-1500 calories per day. I steadily lost weight after the baby and then Mirena. I have lost no weight since and have fluctuated about 5 lbs.

I only came to the realization that it could be the Mirena after I have eliminated everything else over the past 2 years. Frustration is mounting.

I'm going to continue to increase the workout as much as possible, but I feel that 1hr30min /45 min every other day is a very decent workout.

I have not been checked for cysts - thank you for posting this. A definite conversation is in line with my doctor. I too, have zero sex drive and have all the weight around the belly.

I'm not placing blame - just trying to figure out why...

I have had the Mirena for about 8 months and I am now convinced that it is the problem. My weight has never fluctuated more than 5 lbs. I am 32, have one 5 year old daughter. Got the Mirena so I wouldn't have to worry with pills and protection. Slowly but surely I have put on about 8-10 lbs. and it's all in my belly, waist and thighs. I feel so uncomfortable in my clothes now. I have exercised more than usual lately and nothing seems to get the extra weight off. I've been moody and bloated and I never have a period really, yet I always feel like I could at any time because i feel crampy and bloated. Went to the doctor yesterday and found out I have gained 13 lbs in the last year. I am having the Mirena taken out TOMORROW! Good luck to all of you.

I would like if someone who has had the Mirena, had problems losing weight, and had it removed - could/would contact me. I've had the Mirena IUD since November 2009 - since then I have gained about 10 lbs ... granted, we had a lot of snow this winter and I probably ate more than I should, but I also find that I've been craving chocolate more than I ever had in my life.
So about 2 months ago I started working out - at least 4 times / week ... eating right, and taking phentermine & haven't lost a pound. It's so discouraging and depressing. To make matters works, I'm in a fairly new relationship and he is getting tired of hearing about how I feel so fat and so "blah" ... none of the clothes I wore 6 months ago fit, and if they do they are so tight I feel like I can't move. I've made 2 appointments to have the IUD removed, but cancelled them each time because it is the best birth control I've been on and Lord knows I am NOT ready for another. But I made another appointment for Monday and am having it removed ... now I just pray I can lose the weight .... at least some for the summer! I am not happy with myself at all!!!

Hello,
My name is Cassandra, and I've had Mirena since OCT of 2008. I had it put in after about 4 months after our second child.

Now, my whole life I've never been a "skinny" girl, but I was never fat, just very curvy. Lol, I had an average bust and a very narrow waist and from what everyone said "child barring hips". Lol, but I was always much more lady looking than my friends. I am and have been for year 5'4'' and always around 135-140, depending on my moods and those times of the months. I got pregnant with my first daughter in April 2006, and I only gained 5lbs while pregnant, so when she was born Dec 2006 I went straight back to my pre-pregnancy weight. I started the mini-Pill after 6 weeks post baby and I felt like sh*t, to put it bluntly. I was always sick to my stomach and I was sleeping all the time! I stopped that right away and we just did the baby dance and was like "if we get pregnant, that is fine, if we don't, that is fine too."

In about 6 months I gained about 20lbs, but that was due to nursing and eating a lot to keep up some calories since I"m not a big eater. So I went from about 141 to about 161. I than became preggers with our second in Oct. 2007. Lost more weight with the second baby and when she was born I went from 161 (starting weight at pregnancy) to 138. After that, I was nursing but eating healthier and was much more active because I was chasing a toddler around, so when I had my IUD put in I was only 145, which I was totally fine with!

After I had my IUD put in I was feeling pretty good, I wasn't worried about having another baby so soon and I felt more carefree not having to remind myself everyday to take a pill.

It wasn't for about 6 months that started to notice things. I went from about 145 to 160 in about a 6 weeks. I looked 7 months pregnant, and my moods were horrendous! I was always mad and angry, I felt the whole world was against me. I would start screaming and crying for no reason and I felt like a weight on the world, that I would be better off dead in the ground than burdening my family. I then started to get acne, really bad. I wake up every morning with like 5 new pimples, big pimples! I never have had to wash my face or do anything of the sort, but now I do everything to prevent it, and it makes no difference. I have more symtoms now than ever. This is what I have:

Massive weight gain (from 145 to 185-190, about 40-45lbs in the past 2 years)
Hair loss (brush and wash my hair every day, and I'm loosing clumps of hair, but no bald spots?)
Very angry and mean
Crazy mood swings, I feel like I'm bipolar some days
Very bad acne
A buffalo hump, or a big fatty pad at the base of my neck/top of my back between my shoulders
My nails and hair are brittle
A gagging cough

I'm pretty sure there is more, but I cannot thing of them all.

Now, I'm no work-out-aholoic, but I do take care of myself. I don't injest a whole lot of fat, and I only really eat about 1500 calories a day. I'm not nursing now, but now I'm working out and eating less calories. I have not lost a pound, but have gained weight.

I'm about ready to get this pulled, but I want to know if anyone else has had this massive kind of weight gain and mood swings? I'm a pretty happy go lucky kind of person and I'm usually very confiendt in myself, but now I hate my body and how I look.

I want a mom to contact me about her experiences and if she could loose weight easily or was it a lot of work?

Thanks a lot ladies for letting me know that I'm not crazy!

I have had the Mirena IUD for about 3 months now, and I have lost weight because I switched from tricyclen lo. When I switched, I made a conscious effort to stop eating junk food and introduce 30 minutes of exercise per day. I asked my doctor about possible weight gain before I put it in, and she said the hormones do not cause weight gain, there is no scientific proof of that. What they DO cause is cravings, and it tricks the body into wanting more calories than we need (because it is tricking it into thinking your pregnant). So, I have a food journal, where I write everything I eat every day in it, and once I reach my calorie limit for my ideal body weight, I stop. Simple as that.
