I may be able to help
Hi! I had the mirena placed in Oct, 2011 and I have put on 13 lbs. I feel horrible and nothing is taking it off. I'm scheduled to have it out the middle of April. Hoping I lose the extra 13 I gained.
you guys are lucky to have only gained 10! I have gained 20lbs :( and I've dieted , exercised, zumba'd , gone on a 30 day juice fast stopped drinking soda. EVERYTHING. I can't afford to go to a weight loss physician and get pills If anyone figures out anything let me know lol
I've had my Mirena for 2 weeks and I've LOST 15lbs. I haven't changed a thing in my diet or exercise routines. I think Mirena works differently for a lot of women. My boyfriend can feel the strings but he isn't bothered too much by them. A turned on man will do what he needs to do! I haven't had any other issues with Mirena. I hope all works out for everyone!
Hi r u talking bout phen375 diet pill?
As a woman with an IUD I think it is really important to clear up misconceptions about IUDs. They are a GREAT method of birth control and the most effective method (except fot sterilization).
The amount of hormone released by Mirena is VERY small in comparison to that of birth control pills. It is HIGHLY unlikely that it is the reason for weight gain. Women's bodies are constantly changing and lifestyle is the #1 reason for weight gain. Age, pregnancies, diet and exercise are the major contributors to weight. Unfortunately, I think many women simply use the IUD as an excuse or convince themselves (and others!) into thinking "my IUD is the reason I have gained weight".
Keep a food journal and honestly track everything you eat. This includes bites of your kid's mac n' cheese and the cream you put in your coffee...EVERYTHING adds up! Diet is 80% of weight loss, working out is 20%...what matters most is what and how much you are eating!
I am 5'6" and weight 110 lbs with a Mirena IUD. I am active most days of the week and watch what I eat, but I don't work out like crazy and I drink wine and eat dessert regularly. I have many friends with a Mirena IUD and while there are perks (no periods!) and negatives (cramping or spotting), but NONE can honestly say "Mirena is why I've gained weight".
VERY FEW women many experience some bloating or puffiness around their stomach after having their Mirena inserted. This, however, typically GOES AWAY after a month or so, when your body gets used to it. Keep in mind, it is a foreign object in your body. Everyone reacts differently. But, dramatic LONG TERM weight gain and bloating is NOT from your Mirena. Talk to your doctor if this is happening to you, because you may have an infection or need help with evaluating your diet.
This is my honest experience and I hope it helps some of you!

I had the Mirena for over five years now. I liked it a lot as I had no periods and no remembering-to-drink-the -pill issue. I never realised that there were any side-effects. I did gain weight after putting in the Mirena but I did not connect the dots. I thought that I did not exercise often enough or that I ate the wrong kind of foods. Basically blaming myself for five years now. However, two years ago I have taken charge. I started to exercise. (a lot) I started doing triathlons and was told that I will melt away. I also watched what I eat. Basically I have done everything I should. The result. Nothing. No weight loss. Sure, I look more toned , but I still have a bloated tummy and my buttocks and legs are the same size. I haven't even lost any centimetres. and where the same dress size. I stumble upon various of these comments sites this morning and I feel relieved. maybe the mirena is responsible for my weight problems too. I am getting it removed this afternoon. Let's see
I got the Mirena iud about 5 months ago... First month my boobs grew about half a size, I felt constantly bloated, and I had a 2 week period. However, once everything began to settle my boobs shrunk down smaller than ever, I lost about ten pounds, and my period lasts no more than a day. My sister also uses Mirena iud and she had the same side effects. Ever since that month and a half point I could swear my metabolism is a force to be reckoned with. Mirena definitely effects everyone differently, some worse than others. The only way to know how it will effect you, unfortunately, is to try it yourself.
I have the Mirena for 4 1/2 years and have dont everything but starve my self to lose weight and hasn't done any good, but like previouse said I have not gained any weight...I go on the 21st of this month to have removed just o see if I can then lose weight, we will see
I have had my Mirena since the July 2010 and when I first got it in I weighed 220 lbs. It is now July 2012 (almost) and I have lost 70lbs and now weigh 150lbs by drinking 100 oz's of water a day, exercising diligently 3 days a week and watching my portions (counting calories). I didn't "diet" I just didn't eat everything in sight. I think the Mirena can react differently with everyone's body chemistry but I'm living proof that you can have in the Mirena and lose weight (and no, 220lbs was not my after pregnancy weight - I haven't had any children, yet).
My heaviest weight was 249. I did this "Prism" program with a friend who wanted to try it too. We both immediately lost "water weight"! Within the first week I had lost 11 lbs. the second week, 8 lbs! Within the first 2 months I had lost 30 lbs. It plateaued after that but have gotten down to 178. It's so simple. No white flour no sugar! I have an enormous sweet tooth but could still have things with Splenda in it. Check it out. It's so easy and not hard to do. Also, my family didn't have to diet with me. It was stuff that everyone could and would eat! Hope this helps! I've gone from an 18/20 to a 10/12.
it has been a year since your post, did you find that you lost weight after the metformin or did you have it removed...what were the results either way?
I have just had the mirena coil removed as I have gained three stone in the 10 years of having two coils.I have tried every diet but no weight loss. Now I am going to give my body a few months mirena free to see if i lose weight. The Mirena is great in other no more heavy periods great contraceptive. But it's one downside is the side effects that I know don't effect everyone. So I will know in a couple of months is it the Mirena or me .
