Sounds like chilblains.
hi, my dad has some bad hands. both his hands are red swollen and very itchy, his hands always swell up when he puts his hands in some cotton gloves so he sorta gets itchy when his hands get very wet (he's a carpenter) and i really want to help him
Wow, I thought I would just google itchy/swollen fingers/Lupus and all these different things popped up.
I've had Lupus since I was 15yrs old so about 14yrs....sucks!
Anywho, I've had these tiny red bumps that seem to appear out of nowhere and for no apparent reason. sometimes it happens if I lift something heavy....like when I moved.
It usually last a coupld of days...though it seems longer, the itching drives me insane.
I never notice whether its summer or winter but think it happens year round but here and there.
I've mentioned it to my doctors but they seem to just ignore it. Last night my thumb started itching and this morning was swollen and a little purple....I never have tried to research since I know they go away but today I thought I would.
My issue with this as is with most of the side effects from Lupus is that it just disrupts my life, its annoying, cant do anything about it but just live with it....and noone ever understands!!!
Ahhhh, its nice to be able to vent with people that DO understand! XD

well im 20yrs old and ive been having the same problem for the past three years. i am currently suffering from it at the moment. i went to see my doctor and he said and i quote "i dont know what it is but i know what its not, it is not an infection" wow and i still had to pay the co-payment for such great words of wisdom. what i have found to helps with the itching and swelling is soaking my hand in a mixture of raw oatmeal and cold water when it starts to itch or feel hot. sorry for any mistake but i currently have my right hand in this mixture and it really help with the pain. hope this helps.
The itchy hands that swell happens to me also. it usually happens when I'm shopping. There is this pain that I can't explain. My hands swell up so bad I can't bend them. The itch is unbearable.Sometimes it goes to my feet. I haven't seen a doctor about it yet because its not constant. Has anyone got a diagnosis for this??
my one finger on my right had has been very gradually swelling for the last month.. first when it started it was a small circle on my ring finger.. i thought it was the start of a wort.. but as it got bigger i knew it wasn't.. now it takes up about half of my finger.. the middle section.. only now has the itching started.. and its very hard not to itch.. i don't take medication or anything and haven't been doing anything out of the normal.. i am going to go to my doctor, though from what you guys say they don't do anything about it.. just today i notice that on both of my feet i have the same thing going on with a few toes.. another thing with my fingers that has stared over the last month are little small circles.. like the size of a needle head.. they feel like wort's but they only last about a month and never change in size.. they pop up anywhere on my hand (except on the under side of my hand)
Anyways, that's my rant.. i don't know how to fix it.. buy i feel like sticking a needle in it and releasing whatever is making it puff up.. don't think i will though..

I'm so glad I'm not alone in this! I've had a really bad cold, and then suddenly both my hands became intolerably itchy. I have red patches under the skin and my middle fingers are really swollen and difficult to bend. I'm not sleeping as the itching becomes really bad at night time and is waking me up. The only relief I've found is to run my hands under really cold water for about five minutes - although this relief is only temporary. I'm off on holiday in a couple of days, so would really like to get this sorted before I go as it will ruin my trip!
May be celiacs this can be a symptom
so can this "tophi" can or do you think it can happen on one finger? cause ive asked everyone do you have just a clue what this and all in getting is eeewww whats wrong with your finger. LOL
PLZ HELP!!!
PLZ HELP!!!
I've had these symptoms happen to me for about a few years now during the winter. I think most of us could agree that this phenomenon with our swollen itchy fingers/joints happens during the winter.
It always starts off small on one or two fingers, then I'll notice that one finger one hand is swollen, hard to bend, 1/3 bigger than the finger on my other hand! I've noticed that when I walk into a room with heating, my fingers start itching, so the only way I could suppress my itching is to keep my fingers cold. I remember being at school and one of my classes had the heater on frequently during the cold days of winter, and my fingers would itch so bad. I could only find relief by putting my fingers around the metal part of the chair, which always seemed so cold. Not even applying ice would reduce the swelling; directly placing an ice cube in my fingers will just simply end up melting it.
Eventually after most of my fingers (strangely sometimes not all of my fingers are affected) my toes start the same symptoms. I keep rubbing my toes upsidown on a rug or rough flooring to scratch at the itching. I don't know what this strange thing is, is just that during school my fingers get to the point of swelling so bad, it hurts for me to hold a pencil and right, and sometimes even type. My fingers and does always seem so hot and itch when I go from a cold place to a hot place. Sometimes it gets to the point where I think the inside of my finger is internally bleeding because it hurts when I try to bend it and turns redish.
I really don't take action because of my past experience and I know it will go away when the weather warms up. I just have to deal with it and not have it get the best of me! I don't how long it will last, because it just started a week ago.

I had the crazy finger swelling before Thanksgiving of 08. It was so bad I went to an immediate care. The Dr. took blood tests and nothing I mean nothing came up. He thought it was RA, I went to an RA Dr. nope. But the guy was a jackass.
I was on the prednisone pack it did take the swelling down. But now its back the left hand is fine but the 4 main fingers on the right hand are blown up. The ring finger is the worst. It burns, hurts, pins and needles, and itches. It's bright red and swollen from the top joint to the knuckle.
I don't want to rack up any more Dr. bills only because no one knows what it is!
I do live near Chicago and our weather is just insane.
Does anyone get night sweats from it too? I also get tired easily.
I really just want it to go away and stay away I can't bend my fingers with ease and I have a toddler to take care of!!!

I am 32 and mine started about 2 years ago. My middle finger looked like it was about to explode and hurt like hell. Went to the doctor and he told me to get X-rays, then test for RA. Due to no insurance test and x-rays were out of the question. Time passed and I had the problem every now and then but didn't do much about it because it would go away. Today I woke up and my thumb knuckle is about 3x the normal size. The doctor gave me Naproxin and antibacterial meds, oh and a shot in my behind. He thinks it might be a spider bite. Really? I think it's the same problem we are all seeking information on.
We need to get some information down to compare. Age, history (if any), occupation, race, ect...attacks, area, what meds they were given.....ect.
I'll start:
32, Female, white
light smoker, light drinker
Food / Bev Industry
history of migraines
meds: adderall (adhd) Naproxin and amox tr-k both for finger
right handed
middle finger and thumb worst
right hand purple and itchy with pain and swelling
HOPE THIS HELPS!!!!

Have something similar - has come on in the last four days. Hydrocortisone cream and antihistamines have had little to no effect. Only change in my lifestyle is I quit smoking three weeks ago.
Had this once before when I was 18 and having chemo and simply assumed it was another weird side effect of that.
I am going to try the GP soon so will update as to what I hear.
It is very irritating.

I have something similar for the last 3 days, swollen fingers on my right hand. The thumb is not affected. The middle and top joints of all other fingers are red and very itchy. Similar to a mosquito or nettle sting. The digital finger has a bump which makes the finger look crooked. I have no joint pain, just the itching.
The symptoms are different during the day. The swelling is worse in the morning and the reddening peaks after dinner.
It seems to come in cold temperatures. When I was on vacation, an earlier onset just on my middle finger, was gone.
Also I suspect I ate more red meat, sugar and pastries over the holidays than usual. I barely drink alcohol and gave up coffee bust still drink tea. I don't smoke. I am perimenopausal.
Symptoms seem to get worse with eating sugar, sardines or drinking wine. Or caffeine in tea. When I cut a tomato last night, my symptoms got worse in contact with the juice. Also, it is just the right hand, although I had a slight numbness in the left middle finger tip.
I suspect something related to mold or uric acid. Could be also indigestion or allergy. Does anyone have any idea. I want to avoid going to the GC if the diagnosis in similar cases did not seem to bring satisfying results.
I'll try to abstain from wine, sugar, white bread and flour products for some time. Drinking a lot of herbal tea and munching raw veggies like celery seems to help.
