i am 19 yrs old. i have been pregnant before but got an abortion and that was when i was 17 just yesterday my right breast started lactating, i asked my mom about it and she said that it could mean that im pregnant or had a miscarriage so i bought a pregnancy test and the first time i took it, it came out positive i tried it the next morning and it came out negative so i went to a free clinic to take another one and possibly get an explanation the doctors there did not no why this was happening, so the test at the clinic came out negative, they just said that it might be a hormornal imbalance, and that i should still get a blood pregnancy test. i read a few of the comments on this subject and saw that a possibility could be hypothyroidism and it just happens that my mother has that so i was just wondering if anyone could give me any more advice or possibilities thats going on with me. oh to top it all off i have no medical insurance or coverage at all so any information could help my decision to force myself to see a doctor or not

what i just read from a holistic practicioner is not right at all...because I am lactating, saw my Gyn on Tuesday, had bloodwork to check my Lh, thyroids, prolactin and numerous others...including a hcg....ALL NORMAL...including PROLACTIN.

This is not entirely true either...I've had all my hormone levels checked, and my thyroid, and went through a battery of ultrasounds, between tuesday and wednesday this week, my doctor just called, all my labs were 100% normal. That's why I'm on here now, trying to see what else it could be...until I get the mammo and breast ultrasounds. I am lactating, though not a lot and have breast tenderness...I was told it could be anything from Stress, to a hormonal imbalance (which it isn't ....labs were fine) Polycystic Ovarian syndrome, Syndome X..which I do have, though my high insulin levels come and go), or could be cancer...I'll know more on the 11th, after the mammo and u/s. I also treat with a holistic practicioner, and I thank God I found him because of him I was able to lose weight naturally, though, my gyn also thinks that the weight loss could be the culprit in my missed menses and this problem with lactation.

I have been lactating for the past year and have gone to several specialists. My prolactine is normal, but I do have thyroid problems. My TSH is almost always high. The first time I got hyperthyroidism was after my last pregnancy - it happens sometimes when the thyroid gets inflamed post partum - that does not need medication, it just goes away on its own. As it did in my case as well. However, I kept going back to rechecks of my hormone levels and now my TSH is high again. (All other hormones, including prolactin are normal.)

So, if you are concerned about your lactating, please go SEE a DOCTOR and have a blood test done asap. Lactation "without reason" can occur due to a number of things, some of them are harmless, but some can be very serious.

I also disagree with holistic nutritionist's comment. I just got my results back from my blood panel and my prolactin levels were all in the normal range, however, I started lactating about a month before I got pregnant. My daughter is now 8 months and I stopped breastfeeding her at 6 weeks, yet I am still producing milk. It is more on one side than the other, but both sides are producing. They are now testing my thyroid, but my doc said that an issue with that would more than likely have affected something in the other blood tests. I am frustrated because I feel like there should be some answer for this, and I'm nervous because my grandmother died from breast cancer, but it seems as if they can't find a cause. Have any of you been there?

I feel you...I also have 3 aunts who have cancer, one has breast, the other uterine and the other ovarian. all on the same side of the family (my dads). I recently finsihed up all my testing, I had the mammo and the breast ultrasound on Wednesday, I know they found a small cyst, but the tech said everything else looks fine, I'm scared to death of inflamatory breast cancer, since it's basically hard to find...something isnt' right, no period (well I did take that god awful permetrium or something like that) and it SUCKED..but I got my period...and so far I haven't had any more discharge or other white milky substance come out...but Jeez...all my tests were normal as well, thyroid included...

Did they check your insulin? mine is really high 37...I know I have snydrome X, and that can cause this, tho my condition seems to come and go, it's the strangest thing every, especially since I have basically no pancreas, they assured me I would be a diabetic, but it's just the opposite here...im making too much insulin and while it's making me lose weight without trying the doctor assured me that after all the fat is eaten away, it will then attack my muscle tissue. Well, it went away before, so back to my blood type diet.

And all this time I swear nothing has ever gone wrong until I started taking that damn melatonin to help me fall asleep...but they all say no, it's not that

I quit breast feeding 10 mos ago and noticed last month that I have been lactationg. I just had my Prolactin level checked and she said it was a 6 which is normal, said it should be between 3 and 20 if I remember correctly.... I have not seen my doctor back yet. To check for the tumor is that by blood test or scan? She ran lots of blood tests, I also get lots of horrible headaches so was worried it was the tumor. Guess I'll find out when I come back.

I have just started reasearching lactating without pregnancy the last few days. I have a 2 year old that I havn't nursed from the time she was 3 months old. I had a problem and for some crazy reason my milk dried. In the last few days I started lactation again. I have an IUD and thought that maybe I was pregnant in spite of that. The test all came back negative. I finaly called the doctor to ask and they want to see me first thing monday. They didn't say why but your post have helped me ease my mind. Thank you. Stay strong laidies, It is scary no matter what any one else tells you. Just go to the Doc and get it taken care of. This will probably be the only way you can releave your stress. Wish me luch. I also wish you all luck.

I was diagnosed with prolactinoma which is a tumor in your pituitary gland. It can cause high levels of prolactin with can cause lactating, irregular periods or absence of period, headaches and even sometimes may cause depression. You may want to see a doctor if you are lactating just in case. Good luck to all of you!

hi,
I'm new to this website. I have been taking birth control. But this month I started experiencing morning sickness, headaches all the time and my breast have been lactating. I'm on my period and it's a normal period could I be pregnant or could those symptoms be pms but I have never heard of women lactating and being on your period. If I take a pregnancy test while on birth control would It tell me if i'm pregnant? because if I'm pregnant I want to stop taking birth control but if i'm not I don't want to stop taking it.

Caligirl...call your doctor right away, and just to be sure...take the pregnancy test anyway! I've had several friends who have had periods up to 3 months even taken the pill and were pregnant!

The pill does things to your body and can confuse it sometimes...so take the test right away and always remember...when in doubt, have your doctor check it out!

I stumbled on this site so thought I may as well throw our 2 cents in.

My wife and I have not had children (Yet), I am 31 she is 27 and a Nurse. Her best friend which she works with had an ANR or known as Adult Nursing Relationship with a gentleman.

So my wife & I got curious, most of my male friends that have kids loved tasting their wife's milk when they were pregnant and said their wife's really liked it also. My wife's best friend gave us litature and web sites on Adult Breast Feeding.

I admit we got into it, because till then I didn't know a woman could Lactate if not pregnant. We practiced everything we learned, the proper way to massage the breast's, the continued soft suckling of the nipples with the time intervals recommended and got a breast pump for when I wasn't around, and we were lucky to have some help from someone who already experienced this.

When I had to go out of town for a few days her best friend would do the breast massage technique's for me and since she was so close to all this there was a couple times she would come over and massage one breast while I massaged the other so there was fun with this also because it does became some work. Even for my wife.

Anyway, after almost 5 weeks she finally started lactating. Once that started it got easy, breast pump not needed anymore and it has been over 10 months. But the litature says you have to keep up the proper massages and suckling.

At first there wasn't a whole lot of milk but after about 2-3 week's a good bit more was being produced & I mean a good bit and her breast's did get bigger and she say's nipples more sensitive. She was a very nice 34B and actually got firmer also

We have fun with it now, I can suckle to get the milk and sometimes she likes to lean over me and squezze her breast to squirt in my mouth. One breast does produce more than the other.

We let our Dr. know what we were doing as soon as she started lactating and all check up's and everything has been fine.

We are both very pleased we found this. My wife even jokes with me that we may not need children, she has her hands full with one.

Here is one web site on this.

Hope this helps

You apparently have the wrong idea why US WOMEN are on here and talking about this...we are here because WE DID NOT anticipate lactating, and we are worried for our health..it's fanstastic for you and your wife that you have found a fetish to keep yourselves busy...but this about us girls being scared because we are NOT WANTING to be lactating.
Thanks for your descriptive post tho..I'm sure Ill be skeeved for weeks now.
