Hello to all,

I just happen to come across this posting and I am shaking my head. It is obvious to me that none of you is qualified to talk about these problems. PLEASE, do not take blog advice as medical advice!

Lactating is linked to the hormone named "PROLACTIN". Only when that hormone is very high you can lactate. In a normal situation that hormone is high during last months of pregnancy and after the child is born...and continues to be high for the duration of breast feeding.

If the PROLACTIN is high without pregnancy/child breast feeding it means that your hormonal system is unbalanced in a big way! Simple blood tests with your MD (FULL HORMONAL PANNEL blood tests)will bring you closer to a diagnosis. The causes of your hormonal unbalance can be multiple and it is true (somebody mentioned) that pituitary tumor is one of them, also hypothyroidism is another one. In my practice I see a lot of women that have adrenal fatigue (do not ask you MD about it because they do not study in school such thing, only alternative practitioners) and/or hypothyroidism. The most common cause is long term stress.

Untreated, it will eventually get to sterility and very early menopause. If you are talking about a pituitary tumor, there is medication and holistic (natural) way of treating it before surgery.

In fact for all hormonal imbalances there are alternative natural ways of balancing...

Good luck!

High prolactin levels are not the only thing that can cause galacthorrea in a non-pregnant woman. I have been lactating for 5 years now, for no known reason. My hormone levels are all good.

I am 27, and have been lactating since I was 16.

When I first started lactating, I saw my regular doctor and the N.P. Both said that since I don't have any tumors, then the main cause is probably a hormone imbalance caused by either medication (I was on anti-depressants) or high levels of stress (again, very true). The doctor reassured me that there is nothing wrong with my breasts, no abnormal lumps, and my annual always checked out as ok. Since then, I've done the depo shot (which, by the way I would recommend against since I gained thirty pounds during the nine months I was on it, and it took me a while to lose it despite being active and eating right, plus the weird bleeding...) and the Patch, and honestly neither seemed to make a difference on lactation.

I did notice that for about a year I didn't lactate, however I didn't have much in the way of breast stimulation either. However, starting my recent relationship about six months ago, I started to lactate again, or produced more than what I was so I became aware of it. I've never been pregnant, and I can't get pregnant with my current partner.

Either way, I would have a full hormone test done to make sure there isn't a large imbalance that is causing this, which can be a result of a tumor, like other posters have said. If you are undergoing stress or depression, it's also suggested that you look into medication that can help in that area as well. I do know that there are teas and herbs out there that can induce or promote lactation, so keep an eye on any herbal foods or drinks that you consume. Otherwise, check with your doctor.

I will say lactating doesn't bother me, especially since my partner doesn't mind it, but some men may find it gross, so it's something you will want to discuss with your partner or potential partner eventually.

"none of you is qualified to talk about these problems" seriously? and you're qualified?

All the answers above mention internal reasons for high prolactin and lactation.  One thing to know is that some medications and other drugs can lead to lactation...

Somethings to bring up to your doc if you were going to forget to mention...opiates... anti-psychotics...antidepressants...etc...

Good luck!

Opiates do??? I've been on Lorcet since my accident in 2004, while I dont take it everyday, it has been a steady thing to get me through my herniations when they start to bother me...I'm also on Ritalin.
When I had all these issues with the lactation I had started taking Melatonin and that's when it all went to hell...but my gyn said no to that.

I have been lactating for years. I have gone to my GP, Gynocologist and endocrinologist. Actually, several of each. They have all done bloodwork testing everything possible. What they did find is that I have hypopituitarism that is causing secondary Addisons Disease. However, this does not explain the lactating. According to the doctors, I am just lactating and they don't know why.

You may feel that we are unqualified to post on here, but this is where we figure out what others are going through to determine what our problems "Could" be, or just simple venting. You are no better than anyone else because you are in a "practice" we all have problems that need disgusted about.

How ironic that I come across this post. My son is 6 years old and I am still producing milk. My dr is sending me for blood work to check for thyroid issues (again...this will be my second round of testing) also checking my hormone levels. I will also be going for my second mamo next week to be sure there is nothing there. It's very unnerving to say the least to have this still happen even though I am not breastfeeding or pregnant. The dr had NO CLUE why this is still happening, she only said that it does happen though it's not common.

Realize this is old, but for future reference... I am one of those with hypothyroidism and lactating is one of the side effects I experience. Going to see about finally taking medicine for it, but I don't know how it will help. Anyway, apparently this is common for people with thyroid problems.

I have had my thyroid checked twice along with my prolactin levels, and all are normal. So, that isn't the case with my situation, I almost wish it was, that way it can be fixed.

I too am.lactating - I have had 5 children never breast fed any of them I seem to go through a 3 year cycle of weight gain breast enlargement then 3 years later lose stones of weight almost over night I am in the big 3 year cycle at the mo started oct. 2010 put on 2 stone in 2 weeks missed period for 6 months I too panicked I was pregnant although would have been a miracle if I was in each of my big cycles I have had dry discharge but this time I am seriously lactating migraines getting worse had vision disturbance on and off - prolactin and hormone levels in range? Mri booked within next 6 weeks - throughout my life I have always said my weight gain is hormonal but bloods dont agree yet diet of less than 1200cal a day 2 hours swim a week and even tried orlistat no weight loss so no way diet related - this time my lactation is so severe up 3 cup sizes and my bust was BIG anyway breasts so engorged that they hurt all the time - question is although it may produce more flow I am inclined to express to relieve the pain good idea? ??? If I did and I had a tumor would it add to the problem - I dont actually mind lactating apart from pain as many have said its natural but _not normal to be so engorged when not pregnant and I do want to know why - not to mention I can't stand the thought of having to wait till Oct.2013 to be slim again :'( if all these hormone related tests come back clear what else could this be -

Good grief, I think you're all nuts. Lactation whether you're pregnant or not doesn't have to mean something is wrong. In some cases, sure, but in most it's just natural. Does a guy freak out every time he gets an involuntary boner, even in his mid-life? No, because it's natural and can happen without provocation or stimulation. Premature ejaculation can also be analogous as it can either be a psychological symptom or a physiological symptom. Either way, if you stress about it you'll only make it worse.
