I had a LEEP done 7 weeks ago. I had level 3 abnormal cells. I was very nervous for the numbing shot and the procedure itself, but it was not bad at all. It was uncomfortable, but I would not say it was painful. An odd sensation is the best way to describe the numbing. The procedure itself only took about 5-10 minutes. The most painful part were the cramps that started a couple of hours later. They did subside by the time I went to bed though and did not return.
I did have complications with heavy bleeding at day 11 of recovery. I was not in any pain and did not feel light headed, but the bleeding would not stop. I ended up going to the ER because it was the weekend. They applied silver nitrate and the bleeding stopped and did not return. I am a very active person and run, lift weights, etc at least 5 days per week. My doctor told me I did not have any restrictions with exercise so I went back to my routine right away. I am not sure if this caused the bleeding that occurred at day 11 of recovery. If I could do it over again, I would have taken it easy for at least 3 weeks before going back to how active I was. Since I bled heavily I did take it easy for a couple of weeks.
Around week 3 of recovery I developed an odd sensation in my right pelvic area that concerned me so I saw my doctor - nothing was wrong and they could not determine what the pain was from. After about 2 weeks it did go away so I assume it had to do with my cervix healing.
I would say I felt "normal" by week 5. It's now been 7 weeks and I feel like myself. I just went for my follow up appointment and they said my cervix healed nicely. I can now use tampons, swim, and have sex again (I had a 6-week restriction).
My advice is to allow yourself time to take it easy after this procedure and heal. Even though I had some complications I would still do it again should my doctor recommend I need to. The procedure itself was the easiest part. Allowing time to heal took more mental power than anything!

I've had my second leep procedure in 6 months done in my doctors office . The most painful experience ever ! It was horrible I hope I never have to go threw that pain again . I am do for a repeat pap next month praying it comes back normal if not I refuse to have the leep done again in the office while I'm awake !
I got leep done today. I was scared out of my mind to get it done but it ended up not being bad at all! I didn't feel anything but a minor amount of cramping and e procedure went quick. My legs started shaking from the lidocaine shot but that was the only symptom I experienced. Wasn't bad at all! I would do it again if I had to
Hello, try not to worry, just keep your appointments with the Specialists. Imagine at 60 years of age and having an abnormal pap smear and yes, I have HPV and have had a two Leep procedure in two years. However every 6 months I also have a colposcopy which does hurt. Still, I am glad I am in good hands. I do get put under (not general) but a 'no feeling out of it' anesthetic. The staff have been ever so kind. So, it is what it is and we must deal with these things. I have to wait over 6 weeks for my results. Chin up and deep breath.
I had a leep done yesterday it was not bad at all. I thought the numbing process would be horrible it was not I do have a high tolerance for pain but I didn't feel anything maybe it's the doctor in which u have my doctor is the best she tells u when she is doing everything and she is very considerate about the patient well being also.
Right I was the same
I have a leep done Wednesday is it painful do they give u pain med for this cause I ain't so good with pain. Did it work for you
I just had keep done yesterday it is better to be put to sleep it don't hurt at all
Just had mines done today my leep procedure was a piece of cake. I didn't feel the needle injections of anesthesia at all. I only had some mild cramping pressure when the loop instrument was burning off my bad cells, that's about it.
I had my LEEP done Dec. 2014. Although it was uncomfortable, it was not bad at all!
The doctor walked me through the procedure first, then during the procedure told me EXACTLY what I should expect and keep asking me if I was ok. He was wonderful! The only real pain I felt was the needle to numb the area. After that it was just uncomfortable. I drove myself home after the procedure. I did have bleeding and a little cramping but nothing too bad. I took no meds prior to the procedure, but he did use medication to numb the area. I was scared b/c I had a LEEP done in 1998 and it was terrible! I was in so much pain, and they would not give me any pain medication after. When I asked for pain medication after the procedure, the nurse said if she gave me something, I would need to stay an extra 1-2 hours so they could monitor me. I told my husband to go to the drug store and get me something. As soon as I was discharged I took the pain meds in the car. I guess it depends on who your doctor is.

I had my first LEEP 3 days ago. It was uncomfortable but not painful. The shot of lidocaine hurt for a second but it was very tolerable and felt more like a sting than anything else. I felt pressure from what the gynecologist was doing but not pain. The worst and most uncomfortable part for me was having thing speculum in me, not the LEEP itself. If I had to do it again, I would. It's not that bad ladies. Do not be afraid and remember it's for your own good.
I had my LEEP done yesterday, and it was absolutely horrible. She kept telling me it would be less painful than the colp, so I wasn't nervous. She obviously has never gone through the procedure herself. It was like a living nightmare. It took her 4 tries to get the speculum in, ouch. The shot...I screamed, and cried. I couldn't catch my breath. She said, "that should be the worst part." I SURELY HOPE SO! The actual burning part, I felt all of it. The cauterizing, OMG, it hurt so bad. She said, "are you sure you aren't just feeling cramps?" No crazy, I'm feeling pain! It was absolutely horrible. If anyone else ever has to go through this, insist on being put out!
I AGREE AND IM GOING FOR ONE ON APRIL 6 AND I JUST TURNED 23, HOW CAN I CONVINCE THEM?!?!?!
I had one done 3 days ago and all I felt when they stuck the needle was a light, very light burning sensation it lasted less than 10seconds and then the numbing behind. I had no heavy bleeding at all but I guess the more they take out the more u bleed. The doctor put this liquid to where I wudnt bleed so it most of worked.. Procedure was intense but NOT painful at all. Everyone's experience is different.
I had my LEEP procedure done one week ago and just wanted to provide a positive and alternative experience that I experienced. After an abnormal pap, I was scheduled for the colopscopy which came back negative for cancer cells but moderate to high risk dysphasia so my gynecologist recommended the LEEP procedure.
I scheduled two days off of work + the weekend so I'd have a good chunk of time to recover. The worst part of the LEEP was the local anthaesthetic and that's saying something. I barely felt the stinging and burning of the injection, but I did become quite light headed which I then communicated to my doctor and the nurse. They told me that was a normal reaction and just to breath deeply. After the feeling faded I knew the worst was over. The procedure had lots of scary sounds from the tools they used, but that was it. It was quick and painless and I was out of there sooner than expected.
That evening I went home and waited for the freezing to wear off with my pain medication on standby. I never ended up having to use the meds as I didn't feel anything, not even a little period cramp. I used the antibiotic gel for five days whcih I think loosened some tissue from the procedure but that was it.
I normally don't even bother posting on message boards but all I was reading were nightmarish experiences of women. And not to discredit that at all, but everyone's experience is their own. I was definitely pleasantly surprised at how easy the procedure turned out being! The benefits of the procedure outweigh the consequences and if you are nervous, be sure to ask your doctor to clarify what will be happening.
