I have the exact problem. had a car accident in April and they diagnosed me with only a sprain. After 2 months of using a boot and crutches I still had an excessive amount of pain and swelling. Had MRIs done (cash pay because no insurance) and find out I have a complete torn ACL in my knee and Lisfranc injury in my foot. So orthopedic surgeon tells me I need surgery in both foot and knee. Again...no insurance. Foot was most important due to the possibility of dislocation getting worse and arthritis setting in. I still havent had surgery on either due to money and no insurance. Not sure what I'm gonna do. I do exercises and I do the frozen water bottle roll to help massage and swelling. Pain is unreal somedays and other days I can tolerate it. Its now almost October. 6 months later and still swelling by the end of the day. Just as you said with the shoe situation. My injured foot is a size larger. One is tight, one is extremely loose. Very frustrating!
I see your post was from a year ago. Just curious how your doing now.

Hi, I also gained my lisfranc injury playing rugby!
I broke my vehicular, cuneiform and second metatarsal (19.03.2017). I was diagnosed 9 days after and put in a NWB cast for 8 weeks, I was then able to weight bare in removable cast but advised to use crutches. Following this I was referred to physio where they got my mobility in my ankle back and are now working (monthly) on loosening up my lisfranc bones as they are really stiff. I have picked up all previous sport, but suffer with pain in my foot and ankle for up to 3 days afterwards.
What is it that causes the pain?! How do I counter it, cosine is the only thing at the moment!

I was told that it took almost a year for this injury to return to normal sports.
I was injured while playing soccer.
I think you need more time..

I was diagnosed with Lisfranc too. Mid siganosed at first with midfoot Sprain then MRI showed bone marrow edema. After 3 months I went back to the doctor because I still can’t walk properly. Was referred to a foot specialist and she diagnosed me with Lisfranc. PRP was recommended it may work to avoid surgery. Being a runner, triathlete thinking about the effects of surgery was a nightmare. I was back on a removable walking boot, and had the PRP done. Fingers crossed this works. 3 weeks down. One more week for results.
I wanted to hear more about people who did not opt for surgery? Before my Lisfranc diagnosis I was walking and standing a lot. Was icing in between as there would be pressure and slight discomfort. Can one really recover without surgery??

Hi, I'm not a runner but I run sometimes. I had a lisfranc in 2014, it was recommended I have surgery. I declined. I went NWB immediately because I knew my foot was broken and stayed that way for 3 mos. It took at least 5mos to walk without a limp. It was really crazy. I wasn't sure many times what would happen but I knew I was better off than those who had surgery. A year later I resumed my job as nursing supervisor in a 70000sq foot building with the help of rocker sneakers and sometimes velcro ankle braces.but I'm totally fine now. Not a hint of arthritis. My cartilage grew back too. Some say it takes 2yrs to recover, that's not far off.
Hi I had a non displaced lis franc injury just over a year ago. I was riding my bike and lost my balance with all of my weight coming down on the front of one of my feet. I knew something was terribly wrong and called my husband to take me right to the orthopedist. Thankfully I never put weight on it. Long story short, I saw 4 doctors — 3 said no surgery and the 4th at HSS in NYC said surgery. I decided not to go forward with surgery. So a year later, after non weight bearing, a boot, PT etc I am just fine! When they tell you it will take a year to get back to normal — believe it. I should also mention that after the first few weeks I had a bout of neuropathic nerve pain in my foot which was truely awful and kept me awake all night. After trying everything I went on Lyrica for 4 weeks or so and gradually was able to wean myself off of it. Anyway I thought at 8 months that this was the best it was going to be and was discouraged but I continued to improve. Now I am back in my old shoes including 3 inch heels although i don’t wear them that long. Hang in there! I remember laying on the sofa for weeks reading all the horror stories but if you are not displaced — it is worth taking the time and putting the work into your recovery. Good luck everyone!
What did you end up doing? My son had similar thing happen rock climbing and is scheduled for surgery this month. But it seems pretty bad to have surgery and not always a good outcome?
so why did you not get surgury? My 20 yo old climbing son who sounds like yours 7 weeks in. He has a boot and DOES bear weight. Supposed to get surgury in 2 weeks. Thoughts?
Crushed mid foot 21 years ago in a horse riding accident .bent in a 30% angle and big lump Went as far as pre surgery before surgeon pulled out as too bad to operate. Saw a couple of other surgeons who advised same.... 95% chance of losing foot.... so began my long journey of learning to walk again, have arthritis but deal with that. Nuculear medicine scans completed for this. Swimming helped immensely once I got use to the pain of the water as my foot passed through it. The PSI down in deep water was awesome and felt so good like a pressure chamber on foot. Don't run at all but do walk, ride a bike, horse. One surgeon wanted to put channels in my fused foot for nerves.... decided that I wanted to have 2 feet. Leg has atrophy and I use antidepressants and pain relief and keep ankle and toes mobile. Can pick pencils up in my toes. Also walk barefoot and make tendon and muscles work. When I read or listen to some of the surgical repairs I am so glad I was unable to have surgery
i was misdiagnosed due to a sprained ankle at same time drs cant chew gum and walk same time which is very scarey however ive been in a boot or cast now for almost 30 weeks on and off gets so i can start to bare weight after 8 weeks in a cast and my dr takes my cast off the next time 6 weeks then 6 weeks each time i told him it wasnt healed he said you cant stay in that cast forever now im in a boot waiting to see another specialist was 2mm tear no break
I have been putting weight on it ( with a boot ) since day one. The first 2 weeks ( I injured it 2 weeks ago ) I tried to stay off of it as much as possible, but I still had to wash myself, and go to work, ( clerical work, sitting mostly ) I did not fracture any bones, but, there is trauma to the ligament. May need an MRI. Cannot have surgery, cannot stay out of work that long. Very, very, anxious.
Hi your information has been very helpful. I am also athletic and a very energetic youthful 61 year old. I have 3 non displaced 2 3 and 4th metatarsals with a suspected Lisfranc injury. Due to the symptoms it's quite possible. I'm approaching week 4 in the cast and really hoping that I don't have this injury. I am learning patience. Thank you for your info it's been very helpful as there is not much on this injury and I have not found much positive results. All the best.
