Hey to everyone
I Have Irritable Bowel Syndrome, I just had a bunch of doctors tell me while i was in the hospital with intense abdominal pain and nausea, that marijuana "WAS" the cause of the pain. I have continued to smoke marijuana after a 1 day break. All i needed was like about $60 for some digestive enzymes and probiotics. It's probly your diet the weed makes you eat... not the weed itself.

I SUGGEST THAT U STOP SMOKING.. I WAS EXPERIENCING THIS LAST YEAR FOR 6 MONTHS UNTIL I REALZED IT WAS THE MARIJUANA THAT WAS MAKING ME SICL. I STOPPED SMOKING FOR A WHOLE YEAR AND ALL THE SYMPTOMS WENT AWAY I GAINED WEIGHT AND FELT MUCH BETTER (PHYSICALLY) AND MENTALLY. I RECENTLY STARTED BACK UP AGAIN (JULY 2012) AND I AM GOING THRU THE SAME THING ALL OVER AGAIN, I HAVE DECIDED TO STOP SMOKING IT IS NOT WORTH FEELING LIKE THAT. THIS IS THE 3RD DAY THATI HAVE NOT SMOKED MARIJUANA BUT I AM STILL WAKING UP SICK. IT TAKES ABOUT A WEEK OR 2 ((DEPENDING ON UR BODY) FOR U TO FULLY RECOVER FROM THE SICKNESS.. I ADVISE U TO STOP SMOKING IMMEDIATELY IF U DO NOT WANT TO WAKE UP SICK EVERDAY CAUSE EVENTUALLY THE SICKNESS WILL START LAST ALL DAY!!

Why the shouting? There are easier ways to make your point! I am so pleased to read what was causing your vomiting BUT PLEASE BE AWARE THAT ABSTAINING CANNABIS DOESNT WORK WITH EVERYONE!

I urge you or anyone to come over to the cyclic vomiting message board and come and discuss your symptoms and how they have disappeared when you abstained from cannabis. There is a thread on there that is discussing this very subject. I am finding a couple of differences in symptoms of CHS and CVS so you input would be really appreciated!

Many people with cyclic vomiting DONT smoke cannabis so it must be a different illness and that is why I am trying to get everyone posting in the same place rather than random places on the interent Thanks

I can speak on this issue because for the past 20 years I have been a chronic smoker and was in the hospital approximately every two months for last 5 and only one new young doctor, (this is after diagnosing me with anything from stress to IBD to GERD, you name it) was the only ONE to inquire/ask me if I smoked and suggested that was the possible problem. Who would've guessed? Not me, considering the medicinal benefits of this plant. I know several other chronic smoker friends that have and are going through the same thing. I have kicked back ALOT this last year due to my surrounding, therefore I only am able to get 2-3 bowls in a day now, and I have not been in the hospital for a year now, I no longer have to take 15 pills a day just to "not be throwing up", nor do I lay in the bathtub for 6 hours due to the pain of the cramps, etc. Watch within the next 2 years, the above issue will finally get in the hands of the media, and not til then do I believe, the above will be heard to so many who suffer and have NO IDEA they are doing this to themselves by consuming canabis. Any questions, or need proof, there are NUMEROUS articles and on-going clinical trials to provide proof, yada yada. Look them up. If I can be of assistance, do not hesitate to let me know via internet. Best of Luck - Mishell (40, female, & a chronic exerciser/hiker) PS, During my many episodes, for 2 years I could only eat every three days due to painful reactions within my stomach. At one point, I had a torn esopbagus from "wrenching" for days at a time. Nothing less that 3 days stays in hospital, maximum/average 11 days, on a bi-monthly basis. Anything in excess WILL and does effect the body.

Thanks for posting Mishell. The only things I am going to touch now on is your inaccuracies with various things. First things first, There are most certainly NOT ANY ONGOING CLINICAL TRIALS being funded by the CVS doctors and there never has been......EVER!. The studies you mention are not funded by CVSA and are very very poorly done. Heck, why am I repeating myself again FFS! Banging my head against a brick wall! We can both shout our views, it doesnt matter....the fact still remains there has been no funded research into this and the Cyclic Vomiting doctors do not think there is a link.

I arent going to question everything you have posted there because it is in the wrong place. Like I said before, please please come over to the Cyclic Vomiting Message Board and tell us your story. Your symptoms were obviously very real to you and I want to ask you on the syndromes forum about your symptoms. The doctors who diagnose this so called cannabis hyperemesis state that it is common in young males but yet again your another 40+ woman who has suffered so something is wrong somewhere! You appear to know quite alot, I am guessing you are a member of the CVSA?

People who suffer from Cyclic Vomiting and do not smoke cannabis also "sit in a bathtub for 6 hours due to the pain" so I am sure they would also love to hear how you are miraculously better from not smoking "as much" cannabis. You see, thats another things the doctors who think Cannabis Hyperemesis is real..........they say that you must abstain cannabis completely or the symptoms will stay. Obviously not in your case!!

These things need discussing in more detail, not on an anonymous blog but on a forum the doctors actually read. It would be very disappointing if you are right and this "Made it to the press" in 2 years. It is clear to me what your main intention in saying and wanting this and I fear it isnt to help CVS Sufferers and share how you are miraculously cured, but more demonise cannabis in the media using CVS as a tool? Cyclic Vomiting as an illness is already battling various labels being given to it.......blaming cannabis on it is just another easy thing for the doctors to do never mind people on a forum. Like I said before, I know MANY CVS sufferers where abstaining didnt work. Infact there are many adult sufferers of cyclic vomiting who dont even smoke cannabis!!! They all suffer like you and post on a forum......where are the people you know who have suffered from these terrible symptoms and got better after abstaining? I ask in a nice way because I would also like them to come and post on the thread on the CVSA message board too.

Thanks again for posting but you must understand, if you have suffered from these terrible symptoms and you think it was cannabis causing it.............before blurting it all over the internet think about fellow sufferers off this terrible syndrome who dont even smoke cannabis or it is not related at all. Think what their family, friends, doctors etc might think and how it may impact their lives if they read your claims! There is a forum for cyclic vomiting syndrome, I do feel discussions on there would be much better suited and may actually help people suffering this terrible illness :)

It is amazing to hear stories I can relate to.  I am 42 years old, I smoked regularly, about 1 ounce a month for about 8 years (ages 22 to 30).  In 2000, I was driving down the road and suddenly started to have this sharp, throbbing pain in my upper abdomen that ran into my chest.  I figured it was a panic attack or something, and after about 10 min it went away.  The next morning, I smoke a bowl and suddenly hear comes the pain and anxiety again, and every time I took even ONE hit after that.  I quit smoking immediately.

5 years later in 2005, the symptoms start to come back and like I said I hadnt smoked one time in 5 years.  In those 5 years I gained 40 pounds (200 to 240), so when the symptoms came back out of the blue I thought for sure I was going to die.  About 2 weeks later, they got a lot worse, so bad I went to the emergency room and told them I had chest pains.  Of coarse they go on high alert and next thing you know I am there over night and the next day they are giving my a stress test.  Basically the inject radiation into your blood stream, make you run on a treadmill for like 15 minutes, then check to see if there is any blockage.  All the tests came back NEGATIVE.  They thought it was just a panic attack caused by stress.

About a week later things started to feel worse so I went to a doctor who thought I had GERD or possibly an ulcer put me on Prilosec for 30 days.  Within 3 days I was feeling fantastic.

Well about 14 months later, here come the symptoms again.  Again I go on Prilosec and again I feel great, this time for about 6 months.   Same routine, only this time it goes away for what I think is good.

Well in 2011, I was hanging out with some of my old buddies playing cards and everyone is getting high, so I say what the heck, I havent smoked in a long time, no big deal.  I get high and sure enough no bid deal, everything was fine.  The next morning I am hung over, so I take a couple of hits off my buddies pipe, and bam here comes this crazy pain in my upper abdomen again.

Here is what one thing I noticed in the next year, when I was having fun, doing busy stuff with my buddies the weed had no effect on my pain, when I was sitting around and nothing else to think about it would get really bad.  Needless to say I quit, smoking.  I really believe that weed just heightens the emotions that you are currently feeling and that the pain is most likely related to something else.

Here we are in 2012, I decide that I am 42 and being almost 60 pounds over weight now, that something had to give.  I am having stomach pains, cant sleep and really just dont feel myself so I decide to I am going to make losing weight a priority and I did.  I lost 37 pounds this summer.

Here I am feeling great about my for losing the weight and I am exercising a few days a week, eating less, and I cut soda out of my diet.  So I decide to buy a small bag of weed cause I miss it.  I toke up and amazingly NO PAIN, well that was short lived, about 2 weeks later it is all back and this time worse then ever.

I am self employed and couldnt really afford health insurance, so I went down the road of trying the self diagnosis routine, but it just wasnt working out.  I bit the bullet and went to see a doctor, well several before they figured out I had an ulcer.

I only post this so that some of you younger folks might read it and go seek some help, dont be stubborn like me and wait for it to go away.  Our bodies warn us when something is wrong, you may feel better at times but there could be a more serious issue lingering in the background and I can say the stress I have put on myself the last 10 years or so thinking I had heart issues even though I passed all the tests with flying colors is not good for you either.

Sorry to read of your health problems inferno :( Certainly something that doesnt sound familiar at all to cyclic vomiting syndrome mind but obviously very real all the same!

Hopefully you can stay well by avoiding things like cannabis and alcohol and cigs. It reads like you still had symptoms while not smoking cannabis but it heightened them somewhat when you smoked! I can believe this totally. Everything isnt for everyone and if cannabis makes someones condition worse, ofcourse it must be stopped.

That being said, that isnt the case for everyone who smokes cannabis and many millions of people use it responsibly without such side effects. It is each to their own and it is ultimately upto each person as an individual to decide what to put their body through. It sounds like you decided enough was enough and stopped smoking it.....a very obvious decision when you are in such pain. One I am sure everyone else reading this would make aswell if they were in your situation were abstaining helps.

Hope you have a good pain free xmas :)

I've read about half the replies on here.  Here is my story.  I've smoked several times a day for the past 10 years.  I'm 32.  Smoking for me was never a social thing.  It actual made me stay in my room and I would write songs and sing on my guitar for hours.  I loved doing it and I did it for countless hours over the last decade.  If I smoked and was around others, even my girlfriend or most of my close friends, I would get anxious.  I never thought about it really until a year ago.  I live in Oakland aka Oaksterdam.  The herb flows like wine here, only the best.  A little over a year ago I started to get upper digestive issues; indigestion, heartburn, the feeling of being full.  The main symptom is the dull and never-ending pain 1 inch below my sternum.  The pain also radiates to the left side underneath my rib cage.  Like I said, I'm a singer and I had a band that I had to disband because the stomach pain was causing me even more discomfort when singing.  Everything started during a particularly stressful time in my life.  I've had tests done:  CT scan, endoscopy, bloodwork..  Everything is fine, except for a small hiatal hernia.   GI Doc dismisses the hernia as the culprit(I'm not sure why), and now I'm taking a pill called LIbrax (1/2 antidepressent, 1/2 stomach relaxer).  The Librax is kinda working but not really.  I'm also taking 80mg of Omeprazole(prilosec).  I remember my first trip to the ER in Oakland.  After telling the doc what my syptoms are her first question was, "Do you smoke Marajuana?"  YEP!  Being in Oakland she said she deals with a lot of people with my symptoms and they are chronic smokers long time like me.   This was 8 months ago.  I was in bad shape at the time.  I did stop smoking for about a month.  I also started doing yoga, hypnotherapy, accupuncture.  Things have gotten better since then but I've also been smoking a lot more since that month off.  Its my secret elixer to help me be creative and write songs and perform music, right?  Anyways, I'm at the point now that I'm going to stop smoking once I finish my record that I'm already in the process of making.  I hope that relieves the pain for good.  I luv to get high but this pain is ruining my life.  After all that, here is my theory:

Smoking makes me anxious.  When I get anxious, I clench up my stomach.  I think after a decade of this, my body is just too injured down there.  I'm hoping that once I quit the smoke, I'll get better.  I'm healthy otherwise.  Can anyone else relate?

I have had progressively worse nausea  pain and bloating after eating. For the last year I have been using marijuana just to have at least one full meal everyday so I can maintain my weight. I heard that weed could potentially cause IBS so I stopped smoking a week ago. My condition has not changed at all except that im losing more weight, and now I can barely eat. I had to quit because im applying for jobs so i can no longer smoke to eat. Im 5'7" and 105lbs now, my weight is dropping rapidly (lost 15lbs in one month!). My skin is frail and doesnt heal well and my bones are visible everywhere. Im dieing here and i dont know what to do! How long did you stop smoking before you saw positive results? I've been trying to see a specialist but they keep pushing back my appointments. Ive seen doctors in the past that just diagnose me with depression cause they cant find any measurable abnormalities! Im not depressed about anything other than  the fact that im in constant pain or discomfort and im watching myself waste away!

Any suggestions on how I can get enough calories? Maybe if i can get out of the slump i'll reach a point where i just go over the hill of sickness and am better? If i eat to much its just excruciating to the point that im bed ridden. How can anyone live like this!?

I know this is an old thread but I hope someone can suggest something to get me through the rest of the life i want to live!

I have fibromyalgia and have lots of trouble sleeping. I also have sarcoidosis and cannot smoke or inhale things because of tumors. So, I started eating or taking a pill containing marijuana. I develop a headache almost immediately and then a swollen painful stomach ache so I have stopped using marijuana. I am looking to see if this is some kind of reaction with some of my other medication or if it is just my body not working with it. I am interested in finding out more about it because it really does help me sleep.

Dear Anismes,
I just read what you wrote and I hope you will try seeing a new doctor. I am 55 and have only used pot a few times - you can see below my body doesnt seem to like the drug. I have IBS and lots of other stress related illnesses and immune disease problems...when I read what you wrote I thought - Gee, this sounds like it is life threatening. I think you really have something wrong and you desperately need to see a doctor who will listen to you and can help you.

I know it is really hard to find great doctors. I drive to Stanford to see the doctor. I went to the Stanford Pain Clinic and it was amazing. The first visit I saw 3 doctors - a pain doctor, pain psyciatrist and physical therapist. Then the three doctors did tests and conferenced.. Finally I went down to meet with them and they put a plan together for me.

I am not the best patient, not really doing all the physical exercise I am supposed to be doing but they are great!

I don't know if you have any family to help motivate you to seek help but I can say that something is wrong.
Please continue seeking real help -
After reading this website I see two kinds of people - People like you and me - looking for an answer to our pain and the other people seem unwilling to admit that smoking pot might just have bad effects on some people. After all it is a drug! Let's not forget that we are all wanting to be given some kind of happiness through pot and it isn't really happening for everybody.

Please find help!
Good luck!
Sally

Hiya sallyshere,

Thanks for posting your story. You have probably seen my posts and I am sure you put me in the category of unwilling to believe that cannabis might just have bad effects. That is so far from the truth though.

I believe cannabis is not for everyone and your case proves this theory completely. What I get frustrated at is the amount of posts who say cannabis WILL cause this to happen and everyone will get it. It is not true and just because one person doesnt respond well to it, doesnt mean others dont. Alot of posts I read on here are preaching to the point of saying cannabis is completely evil. It is not....infact more people have a positive reaction to cannabis than most other drugs. Remember all meds have side effects but it doesnt mean NO-ONE should take them.

I agree with you though and everyone who is ill should find a doctor who is sympathetic to their condition. If it is cannabis caused then just quit. You dont have to post all over the internet claiming to suffer from some obscure illness....it might just be, like Sally, cannabis just doest agree with you.....That is ok you know!

Anyway, just wanted to post my case again. Cannabis isnt for everybody but for those it isnt for, I dont think they should be preaching what other people should be using. I dont mind that my neighbour takes aspirin everyday for his blood, juts like he shouldnt mind if I smoke cannabis to relieve nausea! Its all about living harmoniously!

Hi,

I use weed .I do get stomach problems but they are usually bugs or a virus that goes after time.

I had cat scans ,blood tests etc and the only diagnosis was stomach inflammation.

I travel and find this creates problems with my stomach and immune system.

Reply

i have also been experiencing the same stomach problems, i think that possibly its just because i smoked a lot of j's or i hold my hits in.
