After reading the 13 pages of people complaining about the same symptoms I am experiencing, I'm still at a loss. Ill cut much of the dry parts out, since they are almost identical to the majority of patients here. I smoked weed as a younger teenage, then stopped for about 15 years. I have been smoking again for about 1 1/2 years. The past few months have been painful and a general uneasy, cramping burning sensation in my abdomen. Less than a week ago I woke up feeling wonderful. After I had a bowl movement; however, things went south fast! With minutes I was was puking my life out, experiencing tremors, low body temp, dizziness. I was unable to walk. I started to really freak out and hyperventilate due to the severe pain and sudden onset. I was really scared something serious was wrong.

My wife rushed me to the ER where after the more life threatening conditions where ruled out (ruptured something, cancer, etc) the Dr guessed that is was CVS (Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome). They hooked me up to an IV and gave my meds to stop the nausia and vomiting, shakes, sweats and anxiety. The thing with CVS is the word "Cyclic" implies that the syndrome is reoccurring. I looked it up and feel pretty good that I don't have CVS. I will be going to an internal medicine Dr next week, so hopefully I will have some easily controlled and curable diagnosis.

I compiled this list of Possible Causes based on the preceding posts:

Indica vs Sativa (some highs feel 'muddy', while others are clean and refreshing) THC, CBD & CBN ratio

Gastroparesis

Food allergy

Diet

Celiac Disease

Crohn’s Disease

Gallstones

Helicobacter Pylori

Smoking on an empty stomach, smoke may be too harsh on the wall lining

Eating after smoking, not before. Something about the way weed creates the munchies. If you eat and then follow up with a smoke, then you are essentially fooling your stomach into thinking it is empty when it is actually full, but still creating acid to fight the food it thinks it will be getting. Something about creating too much mucus as well.

IBS

Prior damage from smoking cigarettes

Stress, Depression and Anxiety - Can pot aggravate symptoms caused by depression

CVS

Damage from prior viral infection

Ingesting smoke and resin can cause your mobility to slow... Focus on not swallowing the smoke as much as possible and buy a vaporizer. (Some people stated the vaporizer helped, others said it didn't.)

Bad weed - dirty water or dirt, herbicides or pesticides, bad flushing, etc.

Ulcer(s)

Studies have shown that use of marijuana can actually worsen symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease by decreasing resting pressures of the lower esophageal sphincter

All those damn meds the VA had me on, including all the 800mg Motrin and Vicodin I ate like candy. What about the nerve meds? Could those have caused never damage in my stomach, opening the gate for Gastroparesis?

In this issue of Neurogastroenterology and Motility, Boesmans et al. show that CB1 receptor activation on myenteric neurons maintained in primary culture can suppress neuronal activity, inhibit synaptic transmission and mitochondrial transport along axons. They also provide initial evidence that myenteric neurons (or other cell types present in the cultures) release endocannabinoids and which activate CB1 receptors constitutively

i have a theory.
its the spit.
im in agony. i think saliva acts as a filter, like bong water. nobody thinks twice about swallowing their own spit.
i think its resin build up in the stomach that got there from spit.
my wife rekons stomach acid would break down the resin. it may not be resin but something else in the saliva that was left there by the HOT smoke.
look im pretty sure if you drink bong water you will have the exact same symptoms.

not very many people described their ingestion method.

i was laying on my belly on the bed with my head off the edge. I was laying in a way to relieve stomach pain and make sure i wasnt swallowing smoke.
i positioned myself so the edge of the mattress pressed into my throat in such a way that i could breathe easy but not swallow.
i hit the bong.
after inhaling a pool of saliva flowed to the floor.

what the hell is going on?

The smoke causes your saliva glands to over produce when smoking. If your glands produce that much, keep that bong water clean.

I read the post about resin smoking and have realized that that may be the problem with my stomach issues. What's weird though is that when i have 3 or 4 beers one night I will feel like a brand new person the next day. I tend to inhale until i can't anymore then notice that i have hiccups due to doing so. What might be the problem is that the resin may be sitting in my stomach and the low alcohol from the beer cleanses that buildup (although i do not recommend using beer as a go-to remedy). Thank you all so much for your input. I will try taking small and fewer hits when i smoke and won't drink any beer and will return with results

:'( How long is it gonna take for us to reallize that weed is causing our stomach problems,
im the same tihng,

but instead everyday my annoying internal alarm wakes me up, nausea and acid reflux, i tried taking prilosec, zantac, prevacid, zertec
but nothing works, nausea is getting stronger, i recently had upper endoscopy and a biopsy and the doctor said i have nothing but a mild erosion due stomach acid, what could this be?
i'd hate to think is the weed cuz thats the only thing easing my pain.

Kay, so I've got a few weird things going on in me at the moment. Im 16 and i started smoking weed for the first time when i was 14. just over a month ago, i noticed that i would wake up with stomach aches and not be able to eat until they had passed. my stomach aches are not acid reflux-like or heartburn-like. i have NO appetite, and vomit when i eat. over the counter meds do not work. MAX strength Nexium doesnt help. the only thing that relieves the pain and brings back my appetite is weed. My dad is a doctor and he believes that its stomach inflammation. should i tell him that the only thing that helps is weed? he is unaware that i smoke almost a gram a day, but im on the fence....

i went to the doctor and specifically asked about the effects of smoking anything on gaseous and digestive problems. He replied that (as i assumed) smoking can be bad when one has acid reflux, but that he believed smoking to have little to no effect on other stomach issues.

I started smoking at 17 and when I was 18 I had a horrible experience... to say it lightly I was uncontrollably relieving myself out of both ends and needed to go to the hospital. I was extremely athletic and in amazing shape. One year later, still in great shape, a similar incident occurred. Given the time between incidents I assumed it to be a bad case of the stomach flu but again needed to go to the hospital due to the severe pain. Next year, I gave up smoking and alcohol for one month and for almost two years no symptoms occurred. During that year and a half I tried to eat much healthier however my alcohol intake and cigarette habits were at a college pro level. I ate red meats but had a balanced nutrition. After almost two years another incident and again, given the time frame, made no connection to the previous incidents. A repetition of these events started occurring annually. During this time I was a daily and habitual pot smoker. Marijuana effects me less than most, even those with similar habits as I, and I found myself being completely capable of functioning in any situation. From the time I was 17 till about 21 I had lived in warm and humid places. When I was 21 I moved to the mountains @ 6,800 ft elevation. It is very dry and cold along with having a lower oxygen level. I had moved there in spring and come Fall/ early winter I found myself with these horrible symptoms every month, and every time required a hospital visit. Come summer I am fine. Fall just hit and I found myself going to the hospital yet again. I have smoke weed from 18-date with no longer than 2 weeks without it; with exception only to that one month previous to my longest time without an episode. At my last visit to the hospital a nurse asked me about my Marijuana habits and insisted that instead of having Cyclical Vomiting Syndrome (CVS) I was suffering from habitual marijuana consumption. Specifics about her reasons for blaming Pot were never discussed.

To give an accurate account of what I suffer from I will give a detailed version of one of my episodes....

It starts usually with stomach cramping and a trip to the bathroom that makes me feel worse. When I am pooping it takes effort and I will be sweating profusely. (This is a sign of worse things to come) I find great relief in the shower and have Very Powerful anti-nausea tablets that dissolve under the tongue (Zofran) Also given to cancer patients... This Doesn't always work!!!! I find great relief in a hot bath or shower. Often I will lay as if taking a bath with the hot water from the shower head pouring on my chest and abdominal area. This seems to only delay the symptoms, in the most severe cases. I know I will need to go to the hospital after vomiting out everything in my stomach each time followed sweat, lots of sweat dripping down my face. After this the symptoms are SEVERE stomach cramps and vomiting of hardly anything but Cyclical none the less. My skin losses color and I become very pale. I am often thirsty as my mouth will be extremely dry (cottonmouth to the max) Cramps, vomiting, and dehydration have gone on for almost three days, even sometimes after being treated in the hospital. Sometimes I must go back to the hospital after being dismissed. I have spent up to 2 days in the hospital and as little as 5 hours. My treatment consists of an IV with massive amounts of fluids and shots of hydromorphone and zofran delivered through the IV. This treatment of shots an fluids repeat every 3 hours or so until my body becomes visibly vibrant and color returns to my face and most importantly I stop vomiting. Vomiting has occurred with nothing in my stomach and continues past the point of solids existing withing the stomach.... meaning I can't even keep water down. This is very scary because I feel I will be unable to pull through an episode on my own should there be no immediate hospital type of care around. I feel as if I will become severely dehydrated unless an IV with fluids are applied. I have stopped several habits of mine including Drinking and smoking cigarettes, eating beef, and any type of fast food. Smoking pot had never occurred to be a cause but I am running out of possible causes. I am giving up Marijuana for a month and will keep you posted on my personal findings.

I have a theory that stomach pain and ulcers form from addiction and probably not getting enough of what you're addicted to. And that means you can either quit the weed all together of start smoking alot more of it. I don't recommend smoking more of it though because your seem to be reacting negatively to it

Hi Everyone, I am a cannabis smoker, and recenlty I have been cutting down my intake and in the past month I have suffered with severe abdominal pain, to the point that I have been to the ER 3 times in the past 2 weeks. I went to see a GI specialist today, and he asked me if I smoked marijuana, at first I was sceptic about answering the question, due to I work in the Medical Field and when Physicians see that patient's spoke, they are quick to judge, but because I am at my witts end, I was truthful with him and told him yes. He says that I have a high toxicity of Marijuana in my system and this is causing my abdominal pain and acid reflux. He is willing to do an upper GI scope on my, but really feels that he is not going to find anything and that if I stop smoking and give it time, it will be out of my system and the pain and acid reflux will go away. I am now on previcid over the counter and it doesn't help much, but it is better than nothing. I was referred to a Medical Cannibus Physican due to Severe Anxiety and I thought this was helping me get better, but instead it has made me ill. It was an alternative medication because I was taking so many medication for my anxiety, I would rather have the anxiety then the stomach pain. I truley believe in reviewing all of the post's that I have read on this site that the Cannabis is causing my pain. I have not really smoked in 2 weeks, maybe a gram at the most, I go to a dipensery, but I really don't know what is in my "MEDICAL MARIJUANA", so I am going to stop. I think if you are having this problem and you don't seek help, you need to stop and let it get out of your system. I asked the GI "how do I get it out of my system?" and he said "TIME!" I hope this helps and I pray that you feel better soon.

Cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome
All pot smokers should look this up as most think it can do noting harmful to your body. You can end up having serious health problems like Gastrointestinal problems or GERD or worse. (If you don't already) My son has been smoking it for yrs and he is getting better, but experienced morning dry heaves or vomiting for 3 weeks straight. He will be on antacids for a while to hopefully heal the stomach.

I'm like the guy above a few. I have way too many bowel movements and its always after smoking. I have to quit due to this. I have a hard time socially drinking due to the stomach problems. I've almost been turned off food because my stomach is always upset. This happened to a friend of mine aswell. After smoking she would always have to run to the bathroom. So yes it causes stomach problems in some people.

same problem here. I am 20 years old and I just had the worst thanksgiving week ever by smoking too much pot. I never had stomach problems before and this is the first time but its very serous stomach pain and ulcers. My poop was black so I assume its bleeding inside. I am too afraid to tell my parents that I smoke pot so I guess I ll just stop smoking for a while and see if its getting better.
