Mirena/ Continuous Spotting

I had a mirena put in because of a heavy period's at the age of 46 i am now 48 I am fed up with spotting and wearing pads. As i am typing this i am quite heavily bleeding now, when i thought i had my period 7 day's ago fed up i am!!!!!!!!

my dr prescribed me a 10 day course of synthetic progesterone which she said is a hormonal recallibration, and should set the spotting straight to a regular cycle. my first day...hope it works. might be worth a call to your dr.

I had the Mirena implanted in Feb 2011 at the age of 44.  It was a little uncomfortable, not too painful and pretty quick to insert.  I was told I could have bleeding for months, which I did for the most part.  I did feel like I was gaining weight and my breasts were more tender.  Then about 5 months on it, everything seemed better and I actually lost the weight I had gained.  Then my periods lightened and less cramps.  I was very happy.  Three months ago I realized I was having a light period every 14-20 days.  I'm not thrilled about that, but before the Mirena, I was starting to have heavy periods and I really didn't like that.  I went to the gyn the other day and she said this may be my normal or it may have attached to the cervix.  I am getting an ultrasound next week.  I hope everything is okay!  My husband and I have loved not having to use condoms.  And even though I don't like needing pantiliners and sometimes tampons twice a month, I don't think there's a better option.  It's still better than the heavy periods and needing condoms.

Ugh, I had the Mirena implanted in February. This s*cks. I had gone for two years of not having my period, I'm 37 and I have Polycystic ovaries. My gyn convinced me the Mirena was the way to go so I wouldn't have to keep taking the pill to keep the lining of my uterus thin.

I don't care what they say, insertion HURTS and now I have this stupid spotting every gosh darn day!! This is ridiculous. My dr told me it could take up to six months to sort itself out. I liked it a lot better when I didn't get my period at all. Fortunately I have not gained weight-knock on wood.

I've had the same thing! Only had it two and a half months so I have to go in for an u/s soon to have it checked and I'm going to tell the doctor about the constant discharge. it is RUINING my sex life. LOL

We have sex or would like to everyday or multiple times a day but I don't want to many times because I'm embarrassed that we have to deal with this and it discourages my partner who happens to like to give me oral (sorry for the TMI!). Uggh. Glad it doesn't seem to be just a fluke problem though and that others have had the same issue.

Well I got the Mirena implanted a little over two yrs ago. At first for like a few months I had that brown discharge, but then it stopped all together, and then no more periods after and no spotting too. So for the past two yrs I have been living my life period free and loving it, It's one of the main reasons why I got it in the first place. I had the same result (no periods) with the depo shot for a whole 3 yrs until I stopped. But now all of a sudden I started spotting a day ago. WTF! I'm so confused, I haven't seen any blood in 2 yrs. What the heck is going on!

I agree! it is also interfaring with my sex life as well UGH!

Same here for me! I had suffered badly with continuous heavy bleeding due to fibroids. I'm 49. This constant brown discharge in between periods is not good that's for sure!! Now as well I've noticed that my periods are really erratic, they were fine for the first couple of months after insertion, fairly regular and lasted around 4 days. After that I got a period after 2 weeks and then not another one for around 6 weeks. This time it looks as though I'm back to the two week cycle. Having said all this I had a dreadful time with the continual heavy bleeding before I got the Mirena so for me at the moment this is better than what I had to deal with. I'll just have to see how it goes over the next few months!

Did u get it taken out or did it ever resolve

Well i'm glad i'm not the only one with this problem. I had mirena inserted a little over a month ago, and literally since the day I got it there's been relatively heavy spotting. It's almost like i've been on my period this entire time, i haven't had cramps like others have explained; but random, un-often deep sharp pains that only last for a couple seconds, but it's kinda scary. I came on the web just to see if what i was experiencing is normal, after finding this page it seems like it is very common. However, I'm really not willing to have this spotting go on as long as some of you had. I know there is another form of IUD that does not have hormones, perhaps that may be a better alternative.

I really wish I had read this before I got Mirena put in. I usually didn't have periods & was a little concerned that at the age of 23 my periods weren't coming. I had previously taken the pill but it made me very moody & killed my sex drive so I didn't want to get back on it. I started bleeding 3 days after I got Mirena put in & that was seven weeks ago. I have only had 3 days of not bleeding or spotting but of course today I started bleeding heavily again & having bad cramps. I too have that nasty brownish discharge. My doctor put me on boric acid to regulate the ph of my vagina (with this much bleeding & discharge it throws it off). I constantly feel gross & have used more pads in the last 7 weeks than I have in the last 2 years. I am so fed up with this & am starting to feel hopeless. I don't want to wait around for another couple months for this to sort itself out.

Hi there, I have had the mirena coil for 3 years and normally I have a regular period, For the last month I have had continuous light bleeding........ do you thinkmy coil may have moved???

 

I have checked the threads and if anything they seem longer not shorter!

 

Any advice would be great

I had the mirena inserted in February of 2011 after having my daughter. We chose it because of the low hormone dosage and so I wouldn't have to remember to take pills (I'm awful at remembering). I've never taken birth control before, I wasn't sexually active until I met my husband so there was no need. My periods were regular, my cramping had always been excruciating and flow very heavy, but I had it under control. In February of this year (after having it for a year) I experienced some awful pain in my lower back and abdomen. No bleeding so I didn't know what it was. I called my doctor and tried a combination of over the counter pain relievers, like 800 mg ibuprofren, tylenol, asprin, naproxen sodium/aleve (which is what I used before) nothing worked for more than 10 minutes. The pain had me rolling around on my bed in agony. I called my doctor again and the told me to go to my gynecologist asap. When I got there they checked it out and made sure it was placed right and that I wasn't pregnant, everything was fine as far as they were concerned. I checked my symptoms online, they mached perfectly with kidney stones. Went to my doctor the next day, had xrays and an CT scan to check for kidney stones. Nothing, he said I was perfectly healthy, but gave me extra strength vicodin for the pain, finally something that worked! Here I am about 7 months later, off and on have had the pain about every two weeks lasting several days, now accompanied by spotting. athis is very frustrating, but I don't want more kids yet and my gyno is very reluctant to remove it because of how expensive it is. Since I've had it, I've had bouts of depression on and off (and I've aleays been a happy and lively person), the cramping and spotting, and I had gained about 40 pounds, now I've lost about 20, but it fluctuates a lot. I don't know if it's from my hypothyroidism, because my thyroid levels are fluctuating a lot too so we can't find the right dosage, but I never had these issues before pregnancy. Are there any doctors on here? My doctors keep passing me back and forth and not really coming to any conclusions or something to just help with the pain. They are very reluctant to do anything except blame my pain on constipation or change my thyroid levels, I want to feel better!

also I am 20 now, gave birth and had the mirena inserted at 19 and my heavy flow and cramps were before pregnancy from when I started at 14 till I was pregnant (18). I don't necessarily want the mirena out, I just want something to help. I might look into artificial progesterone like someone stated before.

I had Mirena inserted early July 2012.  Hormonal BC never worked for me (ex-hubgot vasectomy).  SO I opted for something with a barrier to insure I didn't get pregnant again.  Well,  1st month depression and cramps were Horrendous!  Since then, constant spotting.  I didnt have sex for 3 months waiting for it to clear, but never did.  Then I have sex with my partner and the bleeding gets bright red an heavier for a few days and then goes back to brownish discharge.  I have gained very little weight though (I was under 110 lbs so doc thought it would help go up to a healtier weight).  Migraines are also back with a vengence.  I will remove it in December if it doesn't get better.
