I got the Mirena put in almost 2 months ago and I just got it taken out this morning after reading this and others last night.
2 weeks ago I was driving to pick up my daughter and all of a sudden my hands and arms started tingling and then went numb. I went into a full panic attack, my heart started racing, I couldn't breath and I was sure I was having a heart attack. I've never had a panic attack. I was driving so I got it together enough to turn and pull over and by the time I did it had gotten better. I thought I must be dehydrated or something so I drank a couple glasses of water and went on with my day. It has gotten worse every day since. I finally went to a Dr and he said it was a panic attack and gave me a med to take the edge off, which didn't work. I started to think I was having them because I was going to fly to AZ for Memorial Day weekend (I have always been very nervous about flying) but I came back and it continued to get worse. It went from once a day to ALL DAY long. I have been to the dr 7 times in the last two weeks. And if I could have convinced my Husband to bring me, I would have been in the emergency room every night. Every night I have convinced myself that my brain was no longer breathing for me, that I had to manually make myself breathe. I wouldn't go to sleep because I thought I would die. I read this last night and I didn't wait to see my Dr I went to an urgent care to get this HELL out of me. I am so glad I read this. If I wouldn't have my husband would have left me and I would be in psych ward in no time.
Ladies take my advice...try anothing birth control. These aren't silly side effects. These are life ruiners and most Drs don't even know about them. If you are having problems with wieght gain, your heart, anxiety/panic attacks, feeling like your throat is closing or having something in your throat, or headaches...these are all side effects of the mirena that are not on the brochure your Dr has read. Most Drs will say that your body will adjust in 3 to 6 months but from what I've read it just gets worse!

I got the IUD in aug of 07' after i had my daughter. When I had my daughter i weighed in at 115. Ever scence i had it put in i started gaining weight i have tried everything i got up to 145 and i all but quit eating and droped down to 136 but i absolutly can not lose anymore. Also i started having sharp pains in my right side i thought nothing of it untill i was doubleing over b/c of the pain i went to my dr and they did an ultra sound and said they didn't see anything. now the pain is comeing from both sides and droping down almost like some one is stabing me from the inside out. im afraid to take the iud out b/c i have had such bad experiances with other forms of birth control but i do not want anymore kids at this time. Im not ready to give up sex with my husband just b/c im not doind well with birthcontrol. does anyone have any sugestions

get checked for Bacterial vaginosis. i had issues with this too, and i know how self conscious you can feel. I have had a very difficult time getting rid of it though, so i use the get for 3 days when i notice the smell coming on. Its cheaper than doing the ovules and the pills that make you sick.

I am also thinking about getting rid of my IUD, but im getting checked for celiacs disease. then see if my bloating goes down and what not. finally have a good man, so i will talk with him about what his thoughts are about not having it because it is so convenient, but ive gained a bunch of weight, probably 25, 30 lbs, and am almost at the heaviest ive ever been which i was on the shot(which was way worse for me)

good luck to everyone on here!

I have had my mirena for about a year....and have had some of the same symptoms. It started out with having mood changes. One minute I was the happiest person alive and the next I was crying uncontrolably. Then I started to have a gush of water like discharge ( no odor) . I thought I had some really bad infection, but my doctor told me it was normal. I spotted in the beggining and as the months passed I spotted less. Now that it has been exactly a whole year I am having a real period this month. I have cramps like labor pains, cant sleep at all, and cant eat because I am so nasueas. I don't really complain about my mirena I just hope it doesn't get worse in the next year!

Hello everyone. I've had my Mirena IUD for about 6 wks now and I LOVE it. Only slight spotting here and there. However, lately I've noticed a weird gush of liquid that happens at random moments throughout the day. It's clear and odorless. Anyone else experience anything like this?

I've had Mirena since November of '08 and I've had no issues at all. I did experience the bleeding quite regularly and called the nurse. She told me that it's normal to continue bleeding regularly up until about six months. Well, I just realized the other day, it's been at least two months since I've had any spotting or bleeding. That's a great feeling. I just wonder how on earth I'm going to lose this weight. I hate that I'm not eating like a pig, but I'm sure looking like I do. Anyone with suggestions?

I have had the Mirena IUD for two years now. I am a normal 22 year old college student, and would recommend the Mirena for anyone considering it. After reading all of the horror stories on the web, I wanted to share a positive experience with those researching this specific contraceptive. Insertion of the Mirena is uncomfortable, but then again so is a pap smear so I didn't go in with a not "being able to feel a thing,"attitude. My gyno measured my uterus (the painful part) which causes it to contract. However, it was over before I knew it and I comfortably drove myself home. The next few days I had mild cramping (nothing worse than a normal period) and very very light spotting. The very next month I had no period at all and to this day still haven't, which has been wonderful beyond words. As far as weight gain goes, I have never been smaller. When I started the Mirena I was about a size 6/7 and today am a 3/4 with no major lifestyle changes. I still have all of my hair, memory and anything else that is suppose to fall out or stop working :-) I know that in rare situations women's bodies can react negatively to the IUD but i think a lot of the bad side affects that you read about are associated with ones lifestyle. I think age plays a huge role when it comes to side affects. Most of the bad experiences have been with middle aged women, who's body would be naturally changing anyways. The weight gain, lack of sex drive, mood swings are all associated with "the change," and the body's way of decreasing hormones before menopause. Also, it seems like their are a few hypochondriacs out there, quick to blame a normal headache or irritability on the IUD. Lets face it, occasional mood swings, discharge, anxiety, cramps, weight gain, weight loss, sex drive or lack of, its all part of being a woman;) I've been with my fiance pre/post Mirena and neither of us know its there. So if your a healthy woman who isn't planning on children in the neat future, I'd say go for it! hope this helps.

I had talked to one of my friends who also had an iud put in after her 2nd child. she told me she had experienced that same thing so badly that her marriage in hanging in the balance of this iud. she was always so moody that it almost costed her her marriage. is the iud the reason for my mood swings, headaches, and no desire to have sex?

I had my first one put in about two weeks ago. not even a week after mine expelled. I went back and had another one put back in and afterwards I had terrible pain in my side which didn't happen before so I went back and they want to take an ultrasound to make sure they didn't puncture my uterus, I find out they haven't but they still couldn't tell me why I was in so much pain they gave me some pain medication and sent me home after a day or so I eased up but still have slight cramping almost a week after and my hips and back hurt more. I've never had a child and they say it is more common for a woman that has never beared a child to expell the mirena but is the pain great as well? will it eventually ease up?

I had my Mirena placed about two weeks ago. So far I've had cramps just about every day and that "gush" most of you are talking about. Though the current side effects are annoying, my sex life has never been better. It's so nice to not worry about pills or condoms. I've been checked for infection and all is normal at this piont. The ultrasound showed that the device is properly placed and my GYN says that things couldn't have gone better. I hope to keep you all up to date on this blog in the comming months. :-D

Re:... I wish..........

OMG is all I can say!! I feel like I am normal at reading your post. I have been experiencing almost EVERY one of your horrible symptoms and I have the Mirena IUD. It hasn't been a good experience for me at all. I have had it for over 5 months now and the side effects are only getting worse.
Besides the constant bleeding, swollen abdomen, and cramping. I too have been having panic attacks, heart palipations and anxiety. I have an appointment with my doctor this coming Sept. 8th and I can not wait to talk to her so I can get this thing out of my body!!!!

I wanted to know what it was like after you had it removed. I heard it can be pretty bad!!

THANK YOU so much for your info!!!!
