Mirena IUD Side Effects

Oh my dear god!
I have had the Mirena fitted for 5 months now. I have suffered heart palpitations, severe mood swing, I have put on abaout 3 stone, my memory is abismal, I can't remember a thing, I have no sex drive, I hate absolutely everyone! I actually nearly left my job because I started to really hate one of the girls that I work with, and at some point or another I think I have hated everyone in the entire office.
I feel like I have no friends left because I have pushed them all away. I have no social life anymore.
I am very disappointed that my Doctor has not recognised the symptoms and gave me Anti Depressants only last week because I went to see her saying I was depressed and suicidle. And I have the smell and the discharge too.
Why were these side effects not pointed out at the time?
I feel totally let down by the health profession. What on earth is going on with them.
I called the FPC today, mine is coming out on Monday. If I can get an appointment with the Nurse at my Doctor surgery tomorrow it will be coming out tomorrow.
Thank god for this site. I would have suffered on for years had I not read this.

Hello everyoone...I have had the mirena for almost two months now.. I have not had any major problems at all except for some spotting and discharge that is odorless. I go to the doctor tomorrow for an ultrasound to make sure it is placed correctly. I am 21 with two kids. I just had my son three months ago. I am only 97 pounds so I am hoping that weight gain will be a possible side effect for me. I also have spurts of energy to where i am constantly cleaning and wanting to work more hours at work...

3 weeks ago I had a laparoscopy for endometriosis (the doctor said i had it really bad, and im only 21), and a Mirena put in at the same time. Ive been in SO much pain everyday! Really bed cramps and lower back pain, my stomach is always swollen. I dont know if this is from the sugery or the Mirena! Anyone else had the same?

Hi, I have had my Mirena put in Dec 2007, after my second child. I really have thought it has been a great birth control, loved the fact that I did not have to worry with not taking a pill everyday. I do know many people who have it as well.While talking on the phone with my grandma, she had told me about what she had read about some IUDs, whihc lend me to research on the internet. About 18 months after having it put in, I starting feeling really odd. It was like my body was telling me I was pregnant. I took a couple at home test, but then decided to go to the health department (that is where I got it put in at). After they did their test, and it showed that i was not pregnant. I just thought it was all in my head. My kids are about 20 months apart, so I thought my body was thinking it was. But since then, about twice a year my body does that. Morning sickness, heartburn, just the feeling you are (and if you ever had a baby you know what I mean) I dont know when it started but I have had that strange discharge, for atleast two years now. Which I bring up at every year at my yeary visit, but they never seem to know why. I have gotten bacteris iffections atleast 3 times a year, when before I never got them before. As far as the wieght gain, I dont think I have gained any but I know I cant loose any. Just thought it was because I had two kids. I have noticed that when it is arounf the first of the month, I do have have really bad mood swings, dont believe me just ask my husband. I never really known my self it have anxieties, but the littest thing would set me off, then I would cry cause the littest thing set me off. Just thought I had PMDD or something. I dont believe I have experienced the heart palpitations, thank god. But I have had acne so bad, no matter what I buy and use, I always break out, worst around the first of the month. Only other thing that has been going on since I have had my IUD in, is if I lay flat on my back and you press on my lower part of my stomach, it hurts so bad. ( Started hurting after a couple months after getting it in,I should have taken the hint) Which I have told the doctor about at every yearly visit. And in the last year, while me and my husband are havin sex, and if he goes to deep, it brings me to tears. I can no longer sleep on my stomach flat, I always have to have one of my legs up and bend, or it is like some one is pressuring down on my stomach, and it hurts. I have a month before I have my yearly appointment, which I plan on printing out all these post, and get her to answer some tough questions. I am saving this site so I can show my husband so he does not think I am crazy anymore. Thanks all, Hope this helps other people.

I got the Mirena put in May 2010. The Doctor said it would be the best thing for me because I have very heavy periods. My youngest daughter is 16 years old, so I know none of my side effects are from having children. I'm on 38 so i dont think it is menopause either as some posts suggest. When I got the Mirena put in it hurt so bad that Im scared to go back and have it taken out. The side effects that so many people have post ARE VERY REAL. I go through stages of depression with major aniexty. I have a very lite period now, but because of the discharge i have to wear a mini pad daily. The discharge does have a odor. Sometimes stronger than other times. I do have sex some, but I cant enjoy it anymore for worring about the smell, the amount of discharge, or either that pain. I was having side effects like most and thats why we all have ended up on this site. My regular MD told me that he has way more women that comes in wanting it out than wanting it in. I strongly feel that my gyno talked me into it. Im not accusing but just saying: I know that my insurance paid 100% of it and i also know it was over 1000 dollars. Just kinda makes me wonder. Anyway, I hate it and Im really praying for the courage to go back and get it removed. I do not recommed it. I think it really needs to be recalled.

Yes the smell is the IUD, its horrible! I so feel your pain, I just got mine out on Friday, it's now Tuesday and I am at home because I had to call in sick to work due to the horrible cramps and bleeding but I am happy because it is out of me! The smell is a baterial infection caused by the IUD, they gave me medicine (a gel with an applicator kinda like what you use for a yeast infection) fixed the smell right away but I delt with it for months, miserable and embaraased! From reading and researching it sounds like these infections are common and reaccuring in many women while on the IUD. I also gained 5 lbs (only had it in for 2 months) and was breaking out all them time! Wish I would have done more research before having it put in! The worst part is, I had to ARGUE with my doctor to convince her to take it out and that I did not want to be on any hormones anymore! I was on the depo shot for 7 years, gained 35 lbs, when I went off of it, I literally lost 30lbs in 6 months, it just fell off! The pill makes me bloated, moody and fatigued, I convinced the doctor I wanted a diaphram, just picked it up yesterday, not ideal but seriously I am done with the hormones!!!!

I had the Mirena since jan 2010. I had noticed that my hair started falling out about 4 months after and is becoming worse. I thought that it was normal breakage but realized that my hair is falling out from the root. I am also experiencing memory loss. I am seriously thinking about having it removed. Glad I found this site, thought I was lossing my mind. I have had a lot of problems and they all started shorly after my IUD, but my doctor still swears it has nothing to do with it. 1st couple of things did not even relate until reading all your posts-achne (never had before-except while pregant), mood swings, lots of cramps-mostly upper leg but now moved deeper-only thing I can relate it to is that it feels the same as when my 2nd son was crowning!! I told all this to my doct, still swears not related-says I am having problems with a disk in my back and the nerves are causing the pains-could be true- and I accepted this at 1st but just too many things going wrong. Also have had lots of leaking and odor. Did end up with an infection, again doctor says totally unrelated to IUD, but I have never had any before-other than a minor bladdor infection. It feels like I pretty much have a bladder infection all the time, except way worse. No sex drive at all!-never had problems there either. Lots of headaches-did think much about this either, but now I am. For the past 2 weeks I have been extremely sick, now wondering if I really have a viris or could this be related too! I have had a lot of dizzyness and nausha in the past, but now I am vomiting and have diaria-could this be related too?
Anyway, if I can make it out of the bathroom for more than 30mins I am having it removed. All ready been to the doctor once before and planned to do so, but he talked me out of it! >:( He will not be talking me out of it this time.
Oh yeah, love IUD in the beginning, little to no period-but now crazy bleeding a long with all the rest of the junk!

June 2011 will be 5 years since I've had my IUD! I've dealt with all the symptoms dicussed in this forum. With me being 28 and I've had it since I was 24, no sex drive has been hardest for me! I had and IUD for 3 years prior to getting it these 5 years and I overlooked the systems. I gained about 60 lbs and when I did decide to have another baby I had to take fertility drugs. In the past 8 years I've only had maybe 8 menustral cycles. When I take this Mirena out in June, I will never get it again!!!

I have had mine in for nearly 1 year..As soon as i had it put in i had symptoms of tiredness, then depression. Iwas very fit and happy before, then was extreemly flat and unmotivated to do anything.. I am now on medication for it..I bled not stop for 4 months. Now my periods are non exsistant. I have no sex drive what so ever, my hair is starting to fall out and i have put on about 5 kilos and no amount of exercise seems to be helping. Everytime i ovulate i bleed like a period and i feel as though my cycle is out of wack and i dont know where i am.. I am having it removed as i am starting to wonder if all these problems are related and after reading this blog it has put my mind to ease that im not alone!

OMG - I thought I was going nuts , my poor husband what the hell have I been putting him through, I cant believe that I didnt not click that it could be this mirena causing all my problems, I have had palpatations, mood swings, major cramping, swollen boobs, depression, Im an emotional basket case, - I am so glad I found this site and am not the only one going through this, Im not goign mad after all - booked myself into the Dr's this week and having this monster taken out - thank you all for putting up your wonderful heartfelt posts,

Thank you JESUS.... i found this site.... i have been dealing with this this strange odor for sometime now and i thought i had an STD or cancer or just somethng BAD and CRAZY.... the odor is STRONG some days it jus leaks all the time....I was actually starting to go insane.. i got my IUD after my daughter was born in 2006 and its not due to come out til 2012.. but after reading all the post very carefully i am glad to see thats it not just me and that i am not CRAZY........ the IUD started off GOOD but it is becoming really really bad now i am 24 yo and i havent had so many problems b4 in my life.. the bacteria vaganois all the time, lower stomach hurting, being really cold then being really hot.. i am bleeding now... i am going to the ER to get mine out ASAP...... THANK U SO MUCH EVERYONE....

Hi, I had a ParaGard IUD in October 2010,i ts for 10 yrs, the only side effect I had at the time was HEAVY, and I mean HEAVY periods, I had to change every 2 hrs using the biggest pads available. Thru out the months its been less but still heavy. Now I am starting to feel more side effects. I get very light headed every day, cramping, and it bothers both me and my husband when we are intimate. I have noticed I am very dry, and I am loosing my sex drive. I just now started with yeast infections. In the last week of December I had one, and just yesturday I started again with a yeast infection. I have noticed that lately I am very moody, my hair is falling out, everything bothers me and I start fights with my husband for no reason. But I never thought it was becuase of the IUD. After reading all the experinces eveyone is having with it, I am seriously considering to remove it before I start having more side effects. I have 4 kids, I am 26, I am thinking of just getting my tubes tide. I think that's my best option, but I am scared because I have heard that when you get the tubes tide you are more at risk of getting cancer in the uterus or blood clogs. Is this true?

My god, I'm so glad I went with the IUD with no hormones. I choose para guard and could've be happier! The worst thing I have experienced on para guard was the initial cramping and bleeding, and slightly more painful yet shorter periods. There is no smell, I can't feel it, and I haven't gained any weight. I feel so bad for you ladies who have had to suffer through Mirena....they really should pull it off the market. If you ladies do get it out check out the brands of IUDs with no hormones....

Dear Ladies... thanks alot for your inputs... i got mirena insterted in 2006 and i m about to complete 5 years and wt a terrible span of my life... i hv almost lost my hair ... bad skin, lot of flab and endless anxiety ........ plannig to take it off soon... can anyone of you suggest the best type of IUD ..... cheers
