Hey, Gabadel-------isn't it great just knowing there are so many other "sufferers" out here?! Now you know you are not alone in your agony. I've found some relief with the magnesium which has been great. Why doctors have never been blessed with one of these spasms is beyond me. I think there might be more research on the subject if they would experience a couple of them. Keep hanging on!

Gabadel, please read page five of this thread. A solution was found that involves squeezing youtr thighs together. I promise it works. I have had to use this technique twice and yeah it hurts for a few minutes, but it stops is SO MUCH QUICKER than it did before. before , I would be in agony for 30 minutes or more. But I promise this technique works.

I get the same thing I think.. They sound the same and hurt really bad and when it finally goes away, I am weak for a long time. It comes at night and when it wakes me, sometimes I have to go pee and cant even sit on the toilet. It feels as if it wraps around my thigh to my hip and then to my spine and I walk hutched over... None of my Dr's know what it is either and they also ast like I am making this up. I cant keep living this way.. I get around 5-10 a night and now I even sometimes get them during the day when I am relaxing on m day off. I have tried taking mult vit to try and correct the problem thinking it was a my potasium or magnesium was low. I even have my dr's check my electrolytes and they are pretty much always normal besides my Vit D and Iron are very low. I wish I could find someone to help me so I can live a better life.

I know exactly what you are talking about, one hit me Sunday morning about 7am and again 3 pm. After Sunday I was so weak, but I had to go to work Monday morning. I go 11-20 to a vein Dr. to see if he can come up with something.

Until someone understands what causes these spasms, get a perscription for a muscle relaxant (I use Robaxin 325mg)and at the first sensation of spasm, take a dose. It cuts off the spasm within 8 to 10 minutes, and the dose is small enough to not cause drowsiness. I get the spasms in bed, sometimes while sitting in church and sometimes while watching TV. Also, I have found keeping my feet warm helps reduce the number os spasms I get in bed. I carry Robaxin with me always and it is a relief to know help is in my pocket.

Do try magnesium----it did wonders for me. Haven't had a spasm for months. It is fairly cheap stuff and think it would be worth your time to try.

I am 60 years old and I had 3 episodes of inner thigh spasms last night - first both at the same time and then 2 hours later the right and then an hour later the left.  I woke my husband after the first one and he got me some pickle juice - had heard they were good for muscle spasms.  It did help with the first episode but didn't drink it again for the next two.  The doctor recently had me go from 25 to 50 mg. of toprol 2X a day and I noticed my urination has increased dramatically - up to 3X a night.  Was wondering if dehydration was the problem, but know drinking more fluids before bed will insure I am up several times going to the bathroom.  We have been on B12 and magnesium already so don't see how I can change that.  I dread ever having these spasms again and hope it was a one time thing.  Anxious to read of other things to try.

I feel guilty that i havent posted this sooner. I have found 2 things that seem to help. I have had whole nights sleep numerous times now. Not only the horrid spasms gone, but the regular 'charlie horses' are very minimal now.

Many of us suggested or heard suggested any of the electrolytes. I have a friend who is a dietician. She told me that Magnesium has the largest molecules of all the minerals and it is harder for our bodies to absorb. Her favorite brand is designed to be more absorbiale than others. So, even though it is pricier, it seems to be working. I will give the brand in a minute.

After i started using it, someone told me about a book called 'Magnesium Miracle'. In it, it talks about how calcium makes our muscles contract and magnesium makes them relax or retract. It also says that if we are low on magnesium than our muscles can get out of control with the contractions. I am paraphrasing this. I am not verbatim here. But, you get the point. Here is a link to the author.

The brand i am now using is Metagenics Mag Glycinate 200 mg. I take 2 just before bed (it helps you fall asleep, as well). Now, i realize the book discusses the type of magnesium, even glycinate, but this one is working for me.

2nd thing. this is crazy, but it seems to help immensely. I sleep with soap. Yes, soap. Someone witnessed me going through a 'horrid' spasm and told me her husband and sisterinlaw both suffer from lots of cramps and they use 'Irish spring'.  I was puzzled. what do they do, wash their legs with it? no, she said, they rub their legs with a dry bar. Really?.... 5 days later, on vacation, some one noticed I had been up at night. she said, Oh, my mom gets bad cramps, and she now sleeps with soap. Too weird. So I googled it. It seemed everyone knew about this but me.  So, now....I sleep with soap. I massage my legs every night with a bar of Irish Spring. Then put the bar between the sheets by your legs or feet.  Why does this work?  they dont seem to know. So i researched the ingredients.  There are 3 kinds of sodium in irish spring.  Sodium ...Salt.  Isnt that one of the electrolytes. I think, and this is just my opinion.....I think we are absorbing the sodium thru our skin. Much the same way we absorb drugs thru patches on our skin, the sodium is getting thru.

So, since July, 2012 I have only had 1 short lived 'horrid' cramp and it wasnt as bad as usual. I do the magnesium each nite and sleep with soap. something is working. check it out for yourselves.

I have heard of soap working before, via "Dr. Gott" who used to have a medical column in the newspaper, and many testified to it's effectiveness as well. Their approach, however, was to place the bar of soap under the sheets and no mention was made of rubbing it on the skin. So glad you have found relief!

I am sticking to my original plan as it is working. I drink plenty of water, have started using a tiny bit of salt on my food (my whole life I have never salted my food) and IF a spasm happens, I clamp my thighs tightly together till it ends. Usually less than a minute later. Life is good now. Other than being in Afghanistant that is.

I have these thigh spasms also and they indeed are merciless! I use an ice pack and take liquid Calcium and Magnesium supplement. They usually begin to quieten right away. Best regards to you and I hope you are benefited by this as well.

January 2013. I have had a lot of stress lately and probably haven't been drinking water or exercising enough. Spasms have attacked about 2 hours after falling asleep and are ridiculously painful. Fortunately like most have described they last about 5 minutes and go as mysteriously as they come. The other night I got them in both inner thighs at the same time and could feel it "roll" up and down my inner thigh/leg. All I could do was try to relax (yeah right) until it subsided. Haven't discussed this with my dr yet. Drinking more fluids and stretching before exercise may be the key for me. I have also had this occur on a plane trip where I'm stuck in a confined area for a period of time. Any feedback you can offer would be appreciated. I do take a multivitamin and muscle relaxers at night for a neck injury! Strange to think of getting spasms while on muscle relaxers but there ya go. Excrutiating and temporarily debilitating for sure.
