i have this too. this is the only place i've found that sounds exactly like what i feel. too bad none of us seems to know what it is!! the doc is checking my thyroid, but i don't really think that's going to be it. my deep down feeling is that it's anxiety related, though it seems to be the source of my anxiety lately more than anything. i'm considering going on anxiety meds if the thyroid tests come back normal.
I believe its Whiplash, i have the same pain myself(only the pressure) and i researched what is this and i found it, i will be going to see my doc to ask for help and getting treatment and ask her if i have any other injuries or misfunction.
Here is what causes pressure on neck...
Definition
A neck sprain is stretching and/or tearing of the soft tissues of the neck, including muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Ligaments are strong bands of tissue that connect bones to each other. Mild sprains may involve only stretching of the ligaments, whereas more severe sprains would involve partial tears.
Causes
A neck sprain results from a sudden movement that causes the neck to extend or flex too far.
Causes include:
* Car accidents (rapid deceleration causes the head and neck to snap forward and then backward)
* A blow to the head
* Strain of the upper back or shoulder
# Shoulder pain and muscle spasms
# Tingling sensations or weakness in the arms
# Headache, especially in the back of the head
# Difficulty sleeping
# Fatigue
# Trouble concentrating
# Irritability
# Sore throat
# Stiffness and difficulty moving the head:
* Side to side
* Up and down
* In a circular motion
Diagnosis
The doctor will ask about your symptoms and how you injured your neck. The doctor will examine your neck to assess its stability and the severity of the injury. Diagnosis depends on ruling out other sources of neck pain such as dislocations, spinal fractures, arthritis , and cervical disc disease.
Tests may include:
* X-rays—a test that uses radiation to take a picture of structures inside the body, especially bones. You may have x-rays done to make sure that no bones are broken.
* MRI scan—a test that uses magnetic waves to make pictures of structures inside the body. You may have an MRI scan to see if a ligament has torn completely or if there is any damage to cervical discs (less common)
Treatment
Treatment may include:
Cervical Collar
Wearing this soft neck brace supports the head and takes pressure off the neck. These are worn only as long as recommended by your healthcare professional, usually only a few days, because prolonged use can weaken neck muscles.
Medication
Muscle relaxants may be prescribed to ease muscle spasms. In addition, a medication to relieve pain and inflammation may be recommended such as:
* Ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil)
* Naproxen (Aleve, Naprosyn)
* Acetaminophen (Tylenol)
* Aspirin
Ice and Heat
* Apply ice or a cold pack to the neck for 15 to 20 minutes, four times a day for 2 to 3 days. This helps reduce pain and swelling. Wrap the ice or cold pack in a towel. Do not apply the ice directly to your skin.
* Moist heat helps loosen tight or injured muscles. Only apply a heat pack after any swelling has gone away.
Therapy
* Massage helps increase circulation and reduce tension.
* Cervical traction—May be used intermittently to decrease pain and reduce muscle spasm as directed by a physical therapist.
* Trigger point and botulinum toxin injection
For Conditions Associated with Cervical Strain
* Cervical facet injections
* Radiofrequency neurotomy
* Epidural steroid injections
Prevention
To reduce your risk of neck sprain:
* Drive carefully to avoid car accidents; wear your seat/shoulder belt.
* Avoid contact sports
* Do exercises that strengthen the neck muscles
so there we go, i will be solving my problems and try getting the med, message, and other needs!
I'LL KEEP YOU POSTED!

I have just read through the previous posts and feel slightly relieved to hear others are experiencing similar symptoms to myself.
Two months ago I started to suffer from indigestion and reflux. I was about to have an operation and my doctor prescribed me Nexium for the reflux problem. The throat symptom originally was thought to be from the reflux but 2 months on taking the reflux tabs I am still suffering with this odd feeling in the throat region.
Generally I feel like I have a scratchy right side of my throat which feels more uncomfortable when I have pressure on my throat (such as wearing a turtleneck top). I don't appear to have any lumps or enlarged glands. In the mornings I wake up and feel fine - no problems with the throat and during the course of the day it starts to become tight and scratchy.
I have no problems eating or drinking - in fact that seems to ease the pressure in the throat if anything. I also feel like my neck is slightly misaligned as when I twist my neck to turn to the right it can either "click" or spasm up the right side from the base of the neck to temple.
It's driving me slightly crazy and I do believe it gets worse when I am stressed or worried, but like many, the symptoms do cause me to worry and the doctors do look at me strangely! Any thoughts are appreciated.

Hello everyone.. I've posted a couple times.. My symptoms got really bad last summer. and thought it was all allergy, asthma. althou i do have a reactive airway, and have many seasonal allergies.. I was put to the gammet last year, heart doctor, Asthma Tests, Thyroid tests, Assorted Meds.. none of which really worked.. Even ended up quitting my job! Because of the throat tightness i started having 'panic' episodes as well.. It was the summer from HELL>> when the weather started cooling off, my symptoms eased and finally stopped. Now it is spring.. and here i go again. I had no luck with my Ent..the one that i chose because she was closer to home.. So.. After returning to my 'orignal' ENT. She believes all my symptoms. the pressure in the pit of my throat, the throat tightness, lump in throat, chest pain. Gloppy feeling in your throat. always clearing your throat, raspy voice, when i talk to much or sing. my voice cracks and my throat feels 'swollen' .. it is .. All these symptoms are what i have. and they are all symtoms of silent reflux. the 'technical' term is Laryngopharyngeal Reflux Disease (LRPD) I have no heartburn.. never have. But i have tons of stress. and apparently that is a trigger. hmmmmm... it all makes perfect sence to me.. and the meds she gave me.. seem to be helping. my symptoms have pretty much stopped. and i've been on it for about 4 days. i dont know why it only occured during summer months. may have something to do with the heat. because i also noticed the more i did as far as exertion, the more symptoms i have. But i have to go back and see her in a month. I'll keep you posted. But for anyone that is having this problem. this would be worth checking into. like i said i went thru several doctors last year. and not one of them mentioned this. Good luck to us all :-)
Hello
I've had alot of the same symptoms going on. It started with having food get stuck in my throat at ramdom times that would either eventually go down or I'd throw up. This has been going on for about 5 years. Recently, I've been having the feeling that I'm being choked. I feel this pretty much all day. It's as if someone is putting their hands around my neck just above my colar bone. I've had my thyroid checked, a scope of my throat done, a barium swallow (yuck) and a neck ultrasound. The ultrasound showed that my thyroid is enlarged and perhapse pressing on my throat causing the tightness and choking feeling. I was then sent to a general surgen who said it's not my thyroid who said to see an ENT. My GP said its not necessary to see an ENT and said to see an Endo. Im confused as to what to do next. The surgen looked at me like I'm nuts, and honestly I'm starting to believe him. The only thing that keeps me motivated to figure this out is that I know something is not right.
Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Hope this helps. Have been diagnosed with under active Thyroid. Since a week last Monday I have been on 50mg Thyroxin everyday and this pressure has now developed just as you all describe.
It is to do with the Thyroid . So please get tested again.
The feeling goes from have a piece of Oasis ( the green foam thing at the bottom of a vase that you stick flowers to arrange ) stuck in my throat to the full blown feeling that you have someone pressing their thumbs into the hollow of your neck

Hello all! I have to report that since i have been taking meds for the "silent" reflux i was diagnosed with. my symptoms have been under control.. if i eat something seriously spicey, or if i'm having a very stressful day.. it will bother me.. but for the most part, i am good..
I would beg any of you who experienced any of the symptoms i listed in my other posts. to ask your dr's about silent reflux.
To the 'guest" that posted on 5/14/09.. the choking feeling, or food stuck in your throat,, i had this also.. i couldn't swallow some of my vitamins because they were on the large size, i would choke or throw them up.. it is swelling in your throat from the reflux. it even bothered my voice, if i was talking too much or singing along with the radio. it would bother me.. made my tightness,or choking, feel worse, I told my ent, it feels swollen, she said it is! said it is swollen from the reflux!
Please, Please, Please check with your dr. ask them about this.. I was floored, that all i went thru last year. even quit my job! because i was so ill, several dr's.. NO ONE mentioned reflux.. NO ONE.. ASK!
good luck to you all! K8tiblue :-)

I have been having this feeling for almost 2 years. I've seen an ENT , cardiac sp. general prac. and a Neur. The Neur, says I am having panic attacks, though I insisted that was and is not the problem I had a MRA and an EEG, in witch nothing , so needless to say she put me on Adavan, I turn worked great for oh say 9 days. Well the last 2 days it's back and with a vengance. It feels as though I have a blood pressure cuff around my neck and my uvala is gonna chock me. My right arm is cold and week. My right side near my shoulder is tight and my breathing is a little shallow and I have an ache in my clavical. For some reason I'm thinking MS or a tumor putting pressure on some thing causing this problem. But I can't find a DR to do a full body scan to see if there is some thing. Or even a spinal tap, They can tell if there is an infection, MS low blood count, almost anything that a normal blood test won't show.
Similar symptoms here. Female, 49. Feels like wearing a turtle neck or scarf, but only on right and front of neck. sometimes pressure allows me to feel my carotid pulse without my hands. Feel like clearing my throat alot and swallowing saliva seems like it gets slightly stuck in throat but food goes down fine. Sometimes feel like there's a post nasal drip which must be coughed up but nothing is there and I don't have sinus congestion. Have had this for many years, but it's getting worse. Sometimes can see a slight swelling and feel it if I bend my neck to left. Doctor has done thyroid testing many times but all is fine. I also have a history of partid cyst removal from left in front of ear which could be felt. Surgery to remove found cyst that had grown down neck fingering out and around my left artery. The new problem on right does not have that hard bump in front of ear so don't think that is it. After doing a lot of searching on the internet, I found a condition called Schwannoma which can present itself with little or no symptoms unless it grows close to nerves or organs. I'm going to see if doctor will send me to Ear, Nose, throat specialist to check this out soon.
Reflux disease, thyriod and whiplash are all very different conditions with similar symptoms. I have had tightness and burning in my neck both the front and back for the past two months. Physical therapy, Chiro, and massage are not helping. Xrays come back okay and blood tests come back okay. What is wrong? The only relief I felt was a few days ago for a a while, but the pain is increasing again. What is a girl to do?
I ALSO HAVE TIGHTNESS IN MY NECK AND TROAT IT MAKES ME SO UNCOMFORTABLE I GET STRESSED OUT. I ALSO FEEL SO TIRED ALL THE TIME, I ALSO FEEL NAUSIA AND A TINGLEING IN ME HEAD AND SHOULDERS I'M IN THE PROCESS OF FINALLY GOING TO THE DOCTOR. IT RUINS MY DAY AND ANY ACTIVITIES I DO. I DON'T WANT IT TO BE ANYTHING SERIOUS WHAT COULD IT POSSIBLY BE I GET SO STRESSED ABOUT I THINK I'M GOING TO DIE SOMETIMES WHAT.
I'm amazed that no definitive answers exist!
I believe my neck symptoms are caused by poor posture while sitting at the computer for long hours.
I am a cancer survivor and of course fear the worst. Mine feels like a tightness....puffiness in the base of my
neck or throat, more front than back. I am unable to find any lumps or other causes externally.
Nothing seems to affect the severity. I'm wondering now if it might be "numbness".
Like the other posts, I have no real pain, just a constant discomfort that makes no sense. One of the posts seemed
to mention a sensation of "tightness" of the skin in the front of the neck also, which I have. I find myself
rubbing the base of my neck constantly. I know, due to my "history" I should have it checked, but I do
believe it is a nerve/muscular issue either from the "computer posture" or a remnant of the surgery 4-5 years ago to my right
arm and chest area. :-)
I too, will post any definitive answers.
Good luck all!
I had the exact same problems as you guys have mentioned the only thing that has helped me is sometimes taking prescribed hydroxyzine 10 mg. it says one four times a day on mine.. But i only take one..it seems to help reduce the swelling and fullness. good luck, I have had every test under the sun including ultrasound, blood, mri, cat scan..it sometimes seems to be brought on by eating sweetners and other types of foods. also by stress or crying. Or sometimes by smelling certain fumes.
