I also have tightness in lower next and a lump on the right side extending up to the ear. I believe this lump is swollen lymph nodes and thyroid gland. This is only a guess but the strange thing is that this will happen when I don't eat while hungry. If I don't eat right away a sense of panic takes hold along with the throat swelling. Since this appears to be a link with metabolism and anxiety it points to thyroid. I don't know this for sure and have yet to have tests done but it's amazing so many people are experiencing these symptoms and most of them claim anxiety along with them.

This is an epidemic that either hasn't had it's solution revealed yet or that we're all missing. We really need an answer. If someone has experienced this and found the cause and solution please, for all our sakes, respond.

Might I suggest checking your cervical spine?? I have had this pain for a long time... It's transient, but I've found out that I also have a congenital cervical spine fusion, and that has caused some disk degeneration that presses on nerves.

Of course when I am stressed, my nervous system is worse from the start, but overall the better I treat my neck, the less this feeling that is somewhere between on the low end having the feeling of a shoulder bag strung over me on the left side constantly, and on the high end, recovering from a major case of the Vulcan Death Grip!.

Since there is a higher proponderance of issues between C5 and C6, and this is where the nerves for the left side are and therefore get impinged, it is not surprising to see so many with left shoulder/neck pain.

I'm not a doctor, just an informed sufferer... Take my advice ONLY as a starting place to talk with a professional... I could be full of it!

I have read all your comments and am amazed at how many people are having similar problems. For the last week I have been experiencing a tightness in both sides of my neck almost like pressure from an invisible source that also extends under my jaw and into the jaw joints. This is accompanied by a feeling of pressure in my ears and sometimes pain behind my eyes and a tightness around my temple areas. I find the pressure increases if I bend over and if I lie down (which doesn't seem to have been mentioned by anyone else). Consequently I am having difficulty sleeping as I am only comfortable in a semi upright position. I also sometimes experience warmness in and around my ears and feel as though there is a lump in my throat. I was very concerned about this but after reading your stories I am somewhat calmed. I can absolutely confirm that I have had a very stressfull last couple of months and as a lot of you have mentioned these symptoms have been diagnosed as stress related by your doctors, I am hoping that this is all there is to it! I do, however, have a doctor's appointment next week and will let you know the outcome. I am assuming at this stage that I will be reporting that I am having thyroid tests and have been advised to 'lighten up'! Here's hoping! Cheers, Tray.

If you have Thyroid problems, do not use toothpastes with fluoride. Best wishes!

I have the same thing happen and then suddenly, my girlfriend ends up with the same symptoms. We both have gastrointestinal issues, a Hiatus Hernia and IBS. I am guessing that it does have a lot to do with the vagus nerve and maybe even the salivary glands and lymph nodes.

If you want some relief (and yes it will sound crazy) drink Lemonade, Limeade or another acidic juice like O.J. It gets the salivary glands moving/draining and tends to relieve some of the pressure.

Anti-inflamatories don't really work which leads me to believe that it acts more like an allergic reaction than an actual head ache. I haven't tried any allergy meds yet.

I sometimes use ice to bring down the neck swelling behind the ears and then later heat the area to repair any damage.

I often will take a teaspoon of honey (natural honey) and drink it down like cough syrup, it acts like an anti-biotic.

Another thing that I will note here is that household mold (mould) will break down your immune system and can lead to health issues. We have mold in this apartment and are working toward moving as soon as humanly possible.

Hi,

I have this throat tightness problem after a car accident, as well as neck and shoulder problems. I think it's got to do with the muscles around the neck and shoulder. I'm told to do lots of gentle neck and shoulder exercises. It got better after a year, but lately as I'm working a lot on the computer and start slouching, the throat tightness comes back. The sensation eases in the morning because the neck is supported while sleeping, but throughout the day it gets worse since one is up and about. Evaluate your posture and try some neck stretches and exercise. Hope that helps.

it's amazing how i can actually relate to the problems u all are having..for quite sometime i have been feeling like the right side of my neck have been swollen or tight it wasnt anything i was taking on cause there was no pain jus this feeling of discomfort, and now recently im feeling as though it has intensified also i have feelings of tightness through my right temple sometimes behind my ears and all the way down to my neck, i also have some neck problems because of my daily use of my laptop and my poor posture to go along with it. the strange thing about it is that it is only the right side that feels this way. i went to the doctor and he told me i needed exercise so i started exercising the muscles in my neck to see if that will alleviate the tightness im feeling but i dont kno if it is working effectively as yet since i jus started 2 days ago. Also because of this tight feeling sometimes it feels as though im having difficulty inhaling air through the right side of my throat..i kno it probably sounds weird but to describe how this feels is completely impossible cause ppl will look at u as though your completely mental...it has been very stressful for sometime now because this will always be on my mind instead of tryin to enjoy everything but it seems as though this is controlling me more than i am controlling it..i hope someone can try and help and relate with what it is i am going through it will really be appreciated, thanks.

I came back from the doctors today, having all the same symptoms I've read above. Mine started at the same time as a back / neck pain. which I thought was a torticolis . Doctor told me to take Advil or Aleve to main the inflammation go away. but now I'm left with this.

Pressure on the right side
Sometimes under my lower jaw feels swollen, like tongue and tonsils
Glands & Adam's apple feel swollen
Feeling of food sticking or stuck in my throat no matter how much I drink or swallow
Feels better in the morning & gets worse as the day goes by
Sometime my right ear will pop or feels like its draining itself
Eye will tingle or twitch at the same time as the ear popping sensation
Will get worse after eating or lots of talking

so basically, for 3 weeks now, I've been eating very little solid foods, cause it always seems to stick in my throat on the right side. Which makes you nervous and worry which in turns causes stress that makes it worse. I know & the doctor confirmed that it shouldn't be cancer or a growth of some sort cause it would be there permanently, so that eased my mind a little. He says that its stress related. He had a very weird name for it, which I wish I had him write down, but basically its a neck spasm that triggers from any kind of stress. He gave me Ativan for days where I need it, and said I could use natural herbs and such on a daily basis to help myself chill out. Went to the pharmacy, and got lots of help there. She told me to take VALERIAN . its plant, in capsule form. helps you calm down and also helps if you have a hard time sleeping. And since I worry ALLOT and suffer from anxiety its kind of hard to NOT stress over such things. There's many kinds of forms of this pill. Some of which have Passion Flower added to it which was her second choice. But by what I've been told Valerian & Passion Flower help. I have to check back with The doctor later to see if this gets better or if the herbs help or not. I'm beginning to believe that it is in fact stress related, cause as stated, its not there when we get up, but also, if I have a nap cause its nagging me too much and I just want to get away from it all, when I wake up, I'm fine all over again. I also just want to eat solid foods again !

I have same symptoms, it is my right ear. I have pain in my neck, behind the ear, pressure behind my eye and sometime I feel pinch in my throat. Doctor has given me antibiotics, several times, it goes away temporarily; but, then comes back. Doctor has run several test, such as: carotid artery, ultrasound with nuclear medicine, thyroid test; but, found nothing yet beside a small goiter. If someone finds some cure please help us by posting.
Thanks,

I have been suffering from the same thing for 3 months. Feels like my throat is swelling and gets real tight, like there's a hand around my throat. It also feels like my collar is too tight (even when I have no collar!) and like my blood pressure is through the roof. The one thing no one has mentioned is that my ears feel full. I have been to the doctor while suffering from one of these episodes. My blood pressure was fine, my ears were fine. After describing my symptoms, he said "acid reflux". I said "I have no heartburn." But he told me my symptoms were classic.

I didn't think he was right, so I only took the pills for a couple days. I decided it was some kind of allergy, first peanuts, then aspertame, etc etc, one after another these were proven wrong. Finally I went back to the pills and after several days in a row, my symptoms seem much better. They get worse after eating spicy things and drinking coffee (just to prove him right).

When I went back to the dr. for my refill, I told him that although my symptoms were less, I was still having them. He told me I needed to modify my behavior. Cut back on coffee, spicy foods, don't eat late at night, and reduce stress. I hope we are on the right track, I feel about 75% sure that this is it. Please ask your doctor about acid reflux or GERD.
