Does anyone know what this is ? Same symptoms as above , left side of left knee , numbness and pain on kneeling.i do have a disc problem L3/L4 . Something undercuts skin clicks over like as if it's torn cartilage. Also thought of bursitis and wondering if it could be a trapped nerve?

I have the same problem on the side of my right knee. It on occurs in early morning when I walk my dogs. It actually feels like my knee will collapse. I have to sit for a few minutes and then it goes away. No pain just the numbness. I am being treated by a pain management doc and have had one shot in the back. He said I will probably need two and he was right as it still occurred after the first. Going in for another this week. I do have arthritis and back issues and he said its the nerve he is treating is the problem.

Same here. I now believe it's because i rest my left knee against the car door armrest. I'm now using a pillow for separation. We'll see if it helps.

I've had the problem for nearly a year now. It started when I bent down to get something that had rolled under my bed. Sudden, sharp pain in right knee, mostly toward the outside. For two months, whenever I would squat down to feed the cats, I got shooting pain like something was tearing in my knee. I stopped kneeling, because the pain was too intense.

My doc said that, rather than send me for MRIs, I should try physical therapy first. I had a bit of numbness on the outside of my knee, a line about the width of my pinky finger running back to front. The PT guy had no clue on the numbness (?!) and decided that my kneecap had shifted slightly because I'm horribly out of shape (sedentary computer lifestyle) and that my right leg's muscles were weaker than my left. He gave me exercise bands and told me to lie on my side and do leg lifts (plus some other exercises). Within two weeks, the knee wasn't feeling better and the numbness had expanded to about a 1-inch diameter area on the side of the knee. I think the exercises were straining the muscles around the knee and exacerbating the problem. I didn't want to go back to the PT, because he just didn't seem to know what he was talking about, esp. the numbness, and I got worse following his prescription. Soon, the numbness had expanded to about a 1.5- to 2-inch diameter area.

After spending about three months avoiding kneeling and squatting, I stopped getting the intense pain/tearing sensation when squatting. I've knelt again a couple of times, about two months after the pain stopped, once while gardening (and it was OK), and then a couple of nights ago while again reaching under my bed for something. Apparently, I should stop letting things go under my bed, because the pain started again, though much milder than before.

I saw a chiropractor who tried an adjustment on the knee, but it didn't help. Back adjustments have not changed it either.

Unlike the guy in this thread who crosses his ankles underneath his chair, I noticed that my problem seems more "present" when I'm crossing my legs (sitting on sofa or chair). If I cross right leg over left, the right side of the area just beneath my knee is compressed onto the left leg. If I cross my left leg over my right, the left leg compresses the area on the upper/outer part of my knee, slightly shifting the kneecap toward the inside of my leg. Either way affects the sore/numb area. Getting a 55-year-old to stop crossing her legs is near impossible -- it's ingrained. I'm curious about the slightly shifting kneecap while crossing my legs; makes me think something's at play there.

I wonder if an elastic compression band would help keep things where they're supposed to be inside the knee? I'm going to work on leg lifts without the exercise bands to see if that puts less stress on the knee itself, and do some of the side lunges someone in this thread suggested.

Most peculiar, I've noticed in the past month that my knee also gets uncomfortable when I'm in bed. I sleep on my side, with the lower leg straight-ish and the upper leg bent and sort of on top of or slightly crossed over the lower leg. If I'm on my right side, it seems as though my hip shifts slightly backward beneath me, and that twists the bottom/right leg very, very slightly so the kneecap is closer to the bed that it otherwise would be. If I adjust my bottom/right leg so it doesn't twist as much, the sensations aren't as intense. If I lie on my left side, with the right knee bent on top, it's much better. Interestingly, it feels better still if I lean slightly so that the bent knee actually touches the bed, whereas I still feel some discomfort if the bent knee is in the air above the lower leg.

If only someone would invent some fascinating machine that could give a look at all that's going on inside the knee/leg while you're living your life to show what's happening during certain activities or postures. That would be cool!

I have the numbness in my upper left of the outer side of my knee after feeling the same sharp pains. what it might be?

I have the exact same symptoms. First it was the outside of both of my knees alternately, then the outside of my hands and pinky fingers, heels and now my right big toe! My toe actually hurts from being so numb a lot of the time.

This is exact what’s been happening to me! Went to a nerve specialist who told me I have chronic sciatica. I really don’t have symptoms of sciatica, only minor. Now I’m going for auto immune testing. Please let me know how your symptoms are coming along

Hi, wondering if you ever received any answers? I too have these exact symptoms

Same thing happens to me. MRI ruled out MS and now I go for auto immune testing. Please let us know if you ever received any answers. Thank you

I have numbness outside of both knees, and I have had three spinal blocks in the last ten years. Can this be the cause?

Ive had the same type of symptoms for about 6 years now. I went to a nerve specialist who diagnosed me with sciatica a few years back. I don’t see how that has anything to do with any numbness I get on my fingers. It’s still a mystery to me.
