It's a comfort to hear of other people with this complaint, though it does appear to be a mystery: I too have had no luck with doctors. In my case it started on my left knee and now is on the right also. In the last week, I have had a numbness on the first joint of my left ring finger, with a strange tingling from this joint to my wrist when I move my hand suddenly or press a certain spot on the inside of my wrist. I also have numbness on the outside edge of my big toes. I'd be grateful of any explanation or cure.

look under cervical or lumbar spine problems, we have a long nerve that goes all the way down to our leg and when pressured it may cause several symptoms like everything mentioned in this forum

Thank you for your reply. I will look into this further.

I have a small patch of sensitive/numb skin to the outside of my right knee that appeared from nowhere about 4 months ago.  I went to my PCP who referred me to an orthopedist.  He examined me and then sent me for an MRI which turned up nothing.  He thought there might have been a small tumor in the bone, but there was nothing.  For now it's a mystery and hasn't gotten any worse, however in the last few weeks I've been experiencing a burning pain in my right middle finger when I stretch my arm out, such as you would do when bending down to wash your foot in the shower.  This has developed into another sensitive area on the tip of the same finger.  I'm thinking of consulting a chiropodist to see if they might be able to help in case it is coming from my back or neck.

Very same symtoms as most of you have stated and in both knees, my symptoms started in my 3rd Trimester of Pregnancy and continues (3 mo after delivery).  I am hoping it goes away once I stop nursing, currently seeing an Orthopedic surgeon for pregnancy related carpal tunnel and tendonitis in both hands.  Im thinking it might all be related.

At the risk of saying 'Me too'.... 'Me too'! At about 7 o'clock position and an inch or so from my knee-cap. When I get into bed, (and maybe it's because I'm bending my knee more than at any other time) it gives a stinging sensation. I'm 57 and otherwise in reasonably good health. Cycle most days - vegetarian, etc., etc. Would love to know if I should seek professional help before it degenerates into something much worse. No pain as such - just a disconcerting numbness...

Thanks, Paul.

I have had the same exact symtoms: when pressure is put on the knee, it hurts A LOT. The pain went away, but there is now numbness on the soft outside part of my knee (next to the knee cap).
I am in high school and play volleyball. I use to dive the wrong way (by putting all my weight on one knee). I had bruised a tendon really badly and it was inflamed. I could literally feel the outline of the tendon on my knee. I got rid of the pain by icing the tendon, it eventually went away.

After the pain went away, there is numbness now. It does not interfere with the movement of my knee or when i am exercising. How should i get rid of this numbness? What does this numbness represent?

I'm going to save you all from doing any testing on it. I'm a chiropractor, and I wasn't sure exactly what it was. I knew it was a nerve being pressed, but I wasn't sure if there was anything that could be done about it. My pain in about an 1" lateral... and an 1" inferior to my left patella (knee cap). It's a nasty burning sensation anytime I either kneel down on the knee or if I bend my knee enough to cause compression. It started a few months ago when I had to change the baby's diaper... I was kneeling and it burned. It's an intense burning like a rug burn and it disappears after a few seconds. There is no swelling to the structures of my knee. I tried to read up on the issue and I read that sometimes there is a surgery they can do to "release the nerve", so I had an EMG done to test the nerves. The doctor that performed the EMG told me straight up that the test would likely come back normal, and that it's not likely to pick up such a small area next to the knee.

Oh, and my knee was burning every time I touched it for about two or three months... and then I noticed it started getting numb in the same place, but the burning would still be there if I compressed the area. I was told by the doctor running the EMG that the only real way to fix the problem was to stop compressing the area and it will give it time to heal. I have done a decent job doing that, and it has healed some, but it's still there... a month or so later. Time will tell... but again... don't do the EMG... it likely won't do anything for you... my test came back negative just like I was told beforehand.

Good luck....

Umm, "me too" ! :-)

Competitive cyclist here, I do long (12/24 hr) races, so legs get used quite a lot. My symptoms started a couple of weeks ago. Same as has been described by others...burning/tearing sensation when kneeling down or under full compression, and a permanent numbness on the outside & slightly below my right knee. I don't feel it on the bike, but it does make me wince if I forget about it & kneel down to dress one of the children or something. I'm currently adopting the "don't compress it and hope it goes away" theory.

Having researched this to some degree now, it seems to be one of two things. 1) connected to nerves in the spine or 2) related to uric acid crystals accumulating in the joints. I'm tending to think that it is number 2. I have a high uric acid count and seem to have had a mild attack of gout, so this supports the second option too. At the moment, therefore, I have seriously cut down on sugar (fructose) consumption, and am taking cider vinegar every day. If it gets better, I will post.

Just a quick follow up of my condition... my knee is much better and the burning and numbness are almost gone. I have done a good job trying to not compress the knee and it feels pretty good right now. I imagine the moment I start compressing the knee again... it will come back.

But just staying off the knee does help significantly... it just takes a couple of weeks until the pain is mostly gone.

Good luck...

I have the same numb side knee symptoms. Once it was painful when I kneeled or touched the area but now it's just numb. My wife, a phycisian, believes this is bursitis. She told me to quit putting pressure on it and stop worrying about it it's not a big deal.

I took a lick to the lateral aspect of my knee , just anterior to the fibular head.  (not posterior, where the peroneal nerve runs), and ever since I have a burning sensation at the site of the injury whenever I put the least amount of pressure there.  Then I suffer with constant numbness at this site as well.   This has to be a traumatic nerve injury, with a resultant neuropathy.  Sorta like wacking your funny bone and resulting in a traumatic ulnar nerve neuropathy.  Maybe given time it will heal up, but mine has lasted about a year so far.   As far as treatment goes, I do not know of any.  Try not to injury the nerve again.

You have injured the infrapatellar branch of the saphenous nerve, it is a sensory nerve.  Hopefully , given time it will heal.
