Did not read the entire comment see section but did.anyone suggest periphal neuropathy? currently being diagnosed for numbness side of knees ripping tearing sensations in calls and tingling painful bottom of feet. will update....
After reading your post, it seems to make sense now. My doc can't find anything wrong. When I was born my hips were dislocated. I spent my first year in a hip brace. About every ten years I have had some sort of problem with my hips, especially my right one and it's my right knee and area around the knee I too have all the same symptoms. Lee
Just read this in search of an answer for this. Mine is relayed to tendonitis which i am working on. My digestion is not compromised and i take vitamin B complex. I think it comes as a result of being put in orthotics. Fine a chiropractor who does A.R.T.
I have MS and also this exact problem with my knee. I received my MS diagnosis in the Fall of 2010, although I was symptomatic since 2000. To put your mind at ease, I do not feel as though the MS is causing this knee problem, rather it is isolated to either the nerve that runs across the front of the kneecap or it is bursitis. Unless you are experiencing other symptoms of MS, please don't worry yourself with any such theory.
I have had some luck icing it, but... if you continue to compress the nerve by kneeling on it, don't expect this condition to get better. All the best to you! :-)

These symptoms- numbness, stinging pain- are gout. If you've had it in your big toe, you will recognize it!! I would not have known except I experienced the symptoms in my big toe before I had it on my knee.

I've got same thing an no one will give me an answer, it also felt like something ruptured an warm fluid ran down inside of skin
after nerding out on many ortho sites and looking at anatomy pictures (because i have the same symptoms, posterior and lateral 'tearing sensation' with hyperbending or kneeling of the knee' followed two months later with a lateral knee patch of numbness), i wonder if it might be ileotibial band syndrome? the IT band distally tracts along the lateral knee and attaches below? im going to try foam rolling my IT band? hope this helps :)

I have the exact same problem! I got onto this site to try to find an answer for it.
thank you it was answered.
Thanks - this makes sense
I have the same numbness on the outside of my left knee and was wondering wha it could be? Any ideas?
I noticed you posted this about a year ago, what has happened since. All my knee issues are exactly the same as you ,so im interested to know if you have found a solution. Clair
I had the same symptoms most people in this post have experienced. A sharp needle-like pain when pressure was applied to the left side of the left knee for about a week, and then numbness for 9 mos. I finally went to a neurologist who took my blood pressure, tested my reflexes, tested my strength on arms, feet, all came out fine. He then measured both thighs about 4 inches up from the knees and found that my left muscle was smaller ( I thought normal since i'm right-handed, but he said too much difference). He said there was likely a problem with my L3 area in my back since the nerve to the thigh/knee comes from there. If something was putting pressure on the bundle of nerves there (called the phylaxis), the nerve wasn't properly stimulating the muscle and it would continue to waste away. He tested the strength in my legs and my left leg was noticeably weaker. He sent me for an MRI on my L3-L5 and fortunately it came out fine. He said it was likely I had a cold virus that ended up near my L3 and had caused some swelling. The pain symptom was important as this was likely when the swelling had occurred. As there was no swelling now, he asked me to come back in 4 mos to measure the muscles again and if it hasn't strengthened/enlarged then it could be something else. I hope this helps someone...
