Im suffering from this as i am typing this and its awful. I have had the problem with red wine for as long as i can remember and as a result i never drink it, why drink something that will give you pain? However, recently I get it from white wine too.
It really is painful! It feals EXACTLY as when you try to blow up a baloon as a child

Glad to see that I'm not alone on this one!

I get the same tingling pain/burn when drinking alcohol or high 'acid' drink with food (pizza subs or similar mainly).

Energy alcohol drinks such as Four*, Sparks*, Tilt* seem to be the worst.

Wine and beer seem to have a less extreme result.

Some non alcoholic drinks such as apple cider, grape soda, and some other 'fruit' carbonated drinks are similar.

I'm 24 now. This seemed to have started in early high school. Yes, I consumed alcohol in high school, along with most kids my age (welcome to America, not to be disrespectful, but get used to it).

A true medical explaination of this would be great... Until then vitamin C and water seem to be the best treatment.

Thanks for your help!

I am very glad that I found this website! And I thank everybody for posting and sharing information!

My husband said that he had jaw pain, but that it only happened after he drank alcohol. That was just too weird a statement not to look up online. I read page after page of replies and wanted to post the results of our little "experiment". I didn't tell hubby why he should drink the big glass of water - just asked if he still had the pain. He drank the big plastic Solo cup of water (kind of chugged it down) and the pain was gone.

I certainly don't presume that everybody has the same cause to their pain, but it is certainly worth quickly drinking a big glass of water to see if you get immediate pain relief. Hubby agreed that he doesn't drink enough water, so the dehydration theory is certainly looking feasible for him.

Good luck everybody! :-)

I knew I couldn't be the only one having this problem. It's been happening to me on occasion for about 8 years. I too received the same strange looks and one dentist finally told me that some people have a reaction to salt. My dentist said that salt causes some people to have a muscle spasm in their jaw but that there was nothing that could help. I was also told to avoid margaritas, but I just decided to deal with the pain. Now that I've read about the water idea, I'll have to try it. Thanks.

Wow. There sure are a lot of people that have the same problem. I've had it off and on for about as long as i can remember drinking any type of alcohol.. I thought maybe it had to do with some cavities, but i've since had fillings and no cavities to speak of, yet it still occurs. It seems to happen only with the sweeter alcohols.. wine, sweeter beers, hard ciders, etc. I'm a pretty varied drinker so its happened with a lot of different types of alcohol. I read about dehydration and that seems to strike home for me.. I have been told numerous times I don't drink enough water. However, drinking water during the pain doesn't seem to help all that much. What I find does help me is brushing my teeth. It goes away completely most of the time and i can continue drinking as i was before. I just wish there was a solid medical explanation for it all!!

i got same prob. drinking beer and eating something give me a sharp pain at back of my jaw on both sides. it comes on like something is hitting a nerve but pain feels like its coming from jaw muscle to me. it will randomly come and go and cease bout 30 mins after my drink. it only ever occurs when drinking alcohol and eating

I had this for the first time today with food alone. I ate a tin of beef soup. I usually get it with food + alcohol.

Same thing here. Very painful sometimes when I drink wine and eat. It occasionally happens with beer. Mostly when I combine food and drink.

The trouble with this issue is that it's so inconsistent. I could drink wine all night and eat a stack of pizza and not get it. And then the next night, I could take a sip of wine after eating dinner and be in agony (although it's a pain like a cramp, it's intense but it doesn't last long).

Like many here, you can ride the pain out and it will go away eventually. But it would be nice to find some sort of medical recognition of this issue.

I too agree that this pain is very much like the same pain you get from blowing up too many balloons.

I didn't really want to add to such a long thread but I think others need to know how common this seems to be. Lets get a FaceBook group together called "I get a pain in my jaw when I drink alcohol" ? They have one for "Restless Leg" which I also suffer from, usually when I have not had much sleep (no, I'm not a hypochondriac honestly! :-) )

I too thought it may be something in the alcohol, but I can drink the same bottle of wine (same year/same case) and it may or may not occur. I do mostly notice it is when I haven't eaten for a while. So at times I try to eat first then drink later, but still occurs, though once again not as bad.

After reading through all of these posts, I also have to add that I am very glad to know that I am not the only one that has experienced this. I have never mentioned it to anyone because I always thought that I was just weird! Until reading the other posts I did not put the eating and drinking together as the cause for the pain, but after thinking about it, it does happen regularly under these circumstances. It also happens to me with just alcohol and no food. I have always suspected the saliva glands, and it seems to be a reoccuring theory. I looked for it tonight because it just happened again while I was having a cocktail with dinner. I tried rinsing my mouth with water and drinking a glass and the pain did go away! I would be interested to learn the actually reason for the pain.

Being hypocritical here, but why is everyone posting their details of when it occurs and how long it has occurred for without trying to find out WHY it occurs? Yes, we all have this problem, thus the reason for us searching the net and finding this page (thank you to those who have posted real information about why it occurs and how to reduce the pain). So what good does it do telling everyone your problems without trying to find a solution?

Just to be clear, since there are too many people saying this problem occurs with too many different factors.... it occurs ONLY with alcohol - eating food or not, being hydrated or not, pain occurring from beer / wine / frozen margaritas / name your most recent drink that you had the pain with, standing up / sitting down, talking at a party (come on people, seriously?) are not factors! Just state the facts and move on! We really don't care if you had Thai food that you've had before at a bachelorette party and had this pain with your lychee alcoholic drink...... really......

So, there's my hypocritical post - maybe from here on out we can avoid all the unnecessary details about HOW you get it specifically and start coming together to try and find what works to SOLVE it or what those qualified to give solutions have said about it! Going to dinner tomorrow night with two friends in med school and will ask them to look into this for me if they don't already have a name for it, but don't expect me to come on here and give reasons why I think I got it from the food, the amount of conversation I had with them, whether I was hydrated enough during the day, the medication or vitamins I take or don't take currently, or any other ridiculous factor involved in trying to resolve this painful issue!!!!

This may just be the pain talking right now, but seriously people.... enough already! Thanks

Thank God for this site!! I would like to say that I am 25yo nearly perfect health in every category (blood pressure, h/w, body fat, etc.) I started noticing this within the last 2 years or so and it occurs only with alcoholic beverages. Never food or anything non-alcoholic. And it happens with wine, beer, and spirits and it happens 95% of the time I drink any of them. Hydration is not a factor for me personally. After reading these posts, specifically the med students', it made me think of 2 things:

1. I currently have a cavity that has not been filled

2. I have many calcium build-ups throughout my body (leg, arm, shoulder, back, neck, and JAW!)

I do not have TMJ, just checked last December (09), I have nasal blockage and I am currently on nasal steroids to help open it up. Apparently I am killing myself a little bit, every time I sleep. I have also had INTENSE head-aches, not migraines, on the entire right side of my head for the past year or so and wonder if some of this can be related.

Well, if we add enough cases into this thread, maybe some researcher would finally decide to look into this and give us an answer.

I only started drinking red wine regularly within the past 9 months. However, my red wine induced jaw pain has a peculiar idiosyncrasy: it only happens with I'm eating pizza with red wine.
No, I'm no joking. I can have loads of red wine by itself, with fruit, with peanuts, with pasta and cheese, with hor d'oeuvres, and I would be pink and happy no matter how much I drink. I can eat loads of frozen pizza and I'll fat and happy no matter how much I eat.

BUT, if I have red wine and pizza together, my jaw cramps up.

The ONLY time I had shooting jaw pain was when I'm simultaneously eating my frozen pizza and drinking cheap red wine. No exceptions. Not one. I tried this combination at least three times and every time my jaw pain would come up without fail. No other combination elicits anything close.

The pain goes away after 10 minutes with some water, but I'm still curious as to why the hell this is happening. It makes NO sense.
