I'm experiencing this as I speak and have been for months.the pain in ya anus and when u want to pass it feels like sharp pins stickin u.But I found out today its your eating habits and exercising. If u don't eat all the healthy stuff r don't take ya multivitamins on the regular, u end up wit trap gas.I truly believe my dr,the pain goes away after 2 days n it eases away when u fart... Trap gas ppl

It's more than just that. I exercise 5-6 days a week and eat very healthy. This kind of pain is new and is out of this world. I don't think that "trapped gas" is the only explanation. I will not accept that as the only explanation when I see my Dr. tomorrow and will insist that it is looked into further.

I am right with you frustrated, its more than trapped gas. The fact that it only happens while I am on my period signals it. It has to do with your bowels being pinched or something by our uterus while on our period. I just went to dr today and she suggested hysterectomy. I have two kids and dont plan to have any more kids, I am 40. I am seriously considering it due to the extreme/paralyzing pain that makes me sweat like I just ran a marathon. I sit on one cheek because I feel like my insides are going to burst and come out of my rectum. Intense pressure the first two days of period with severe pain while passing gas and bowel movements. What is this??????

Try to make a tea with anise and oregano it really helps me. I put a full tea spoon of oregano with a half tea spoon of anise (you can buy it in any grocery store in the spices section) with boiling water and let it rest. It really help me and I have been using it for years now I used to take ibuprofen 800ml. and even with that it wasn't that effective -the pain was unbearable. The oregano helps to distend organs therefore is very good for any cramp (that's why is not recommended if you are pregnant for its possible abortive effects), the anise also helps with the cramps

Please feel free to research the benefits of both for menstrual cramps. :)

Please drink anise and oregano tea! I feel your pain and i had tried so many medicines without luck until I tried this natural and awesome recipe In a cup with boiling water put 1 full teaspoon of oregano and 1/2 teaspoon of anise you'll thank me for this recipe. ( you could find any of those in the grocery store in the spices area) 20 min after drinking this the horrible pain is gone> Try it please and let me know how it goes! Good luck! :D

I went to see my Dr.and he said that it was Dysmenorrhea (basically extreme pain when when on your period). He prescribed me Naproxen and told me to start taking it a few days before my period. If that didn't work he said that going back on the pill might be the next option to try. This month I tried the Naproxen and started taking it two days before my period. Wow! What a difference it made!! While I still had some cramps, it was no where near the pain that I had previously experienced. I'll try it again next month and hopefully the results will be the same. I experienced a little more water retention with the Naproxen but I'll take that over the pain! I was really very skeptical about the Naproxen working like it did because the pain was soooo bad. I had myself prepared to find out that I had something really wrong with me and would possibly need surgery of some sort. Keeping my fingers crossed that this is all I need.

i experience severe lower abdominal pain during any B/M for the first 2 days of my period. My belly swells up a day or so before the flow starts, then comes the severe cramps followed by very difficult painfull bowel movements. I tried laxitives but they gave me gas pains so severe i thought i would die. Someone told me to try an enema but I am afraid to do this during my period.

Wow! I can't believe that so many other women have this problem too! I am relieved to not be alone but at the same time i wish i was because that would mean no one else has to go through it. I've never had kids, but I share the same painful symptoms that all of you are describing. I really found it interesting that a common factor is that it happens the 1st 2 days for most of us. We all seem to experience the painful bowel movements and sharp pain sensation in the rectum area (even hard to sit at times) and we all have had such pain it makes us scream. My periods were fairly easy from 18-24. Then out of no-where it seemed I developed these crazy periods. However, it didn't happen every month until I was 26 and then after that it was every month like clockwork. It was so bad I missed at least 1 day of work every period. I would be bed ridden most often. I also got constant (not severe) pains in my lower back at the base of my spine, thought i'd mention that since i haven't noticed anyone else say it. I've never seen a doctor about it because when I read up on it online endometrosis fit my symptoms and when I consider the surgery I read up that it doesn't guarantee that it will improve your symptoms. So i started looking for other alternatives. I also read up that caffeine and sugar and stress are big factors in how severe the pain can get. So I started decreasing my caffeine and sugar intake 1 to 2 weeks before my period and this actually made a big difference for me. Also, my mom advised I start taking krill oil. I take 4 tablets a day now. I notice that it really really does help as long as i faithfully take the krill oil everyday. If i get lazy and miss a bunch of days then I get the painful period again. However, when I am super stressed it overrides everything I seem to do and I'm back to having painful periods. So, I think it's a combination of diet and stress. I also fast the first 2days of my period to avoid painful bowel movements. I do notice sometimes I start to feel weird the day before i start and if i do i will not eat that day either. I stick to liquids. If you do have the pains i highly recommend getting a torso length heat pad. My boyfriend felt bad for me and surprised me with it one day. I didn't even think of it, but it totally helps alleviate my pain and helps me fall asleep so i don't have to endure it. He got it at walgreens. You can wrap it around your waist, lay on your stomach, or on your back. I usually rotate between all of those until it eases it and/or i fall asleep.

I've been having pain during bowel movemens too. i started noticing that i either get constipated a few days before my period or i get really gassy and bloated. so im sure its my period causing all of this. but what i recently found out  at the doctor was that i have vulvar vestubilitis. i googled  vulvar pain foundation because my doctor told me to -_- and i found a bunch of these symptoms. my symptoms are frequent urinary or yeast infections, pain during intercourse, constipation, dry vaginal discharge, itchiness either on anus or around vagina, pain at touch or simple tug on pubic hair ( so i keep it short). All of these symptoms get worse with my period. Just commenting and letting you know about what i found.

I'm sorry to see others are having this pain, but it does make me feel a little bit reassured.  I am 33, thin  (due to stress) and had two c sections (my youngest is 16 months).  After my second son was born, when my periods came back, I started having heavier periods than before.  Four months ago, I started having horrible, horrible stop me in my track pains when passing gas or right before a bowel movement.  Some blood comes from my bottem.  I also have stinging pains in my abdominal fat quite often, a rather swollen groin lymph node (though the doctors say it is not that swollen and with an ultrasound are not concerned) and right after my period I have sharp pains in my breast.  At my yearly in September, my ob pretty much discounted the endometriosis theory, and he told me my uterus was tilted back.  I had a regular and transvaginal ultraound in october that showed a thicker endometrium than expected based on my cycle, and just had a repeaet ultrasound two days ago.  I"m hoping the endometrium is no longer thick, but I'm also wanting answers!  I also had two utis this summer (only had one in my life before) and had bacterial vaginosis three weeks ago.  I have GERD and notice that it gets much worse around my period.  I'm just so frustrated as I feel the doctors don't seem to have a solution

Does anyone else have bad PMS along with the other problems described here?

I just wanted to share that I received a call from my ob tonight to inform me that my endometrial lining was of normal thickness this time, but my ob suspects I have something called pelvic congestion syndrome.  It is basically varicose veins in the abdomen/uterus.  10 days before my next period, he wants me to take some diuretic pills which is supposed to help get rid of some of the fluid.  Hoping it really does help!!!!!  And hope that maybe this is helpful for someone!

I get this problem as well and at the end of my period I pass alot of wind and I still have achy pain in the lower abdomen and lower back for a couple of days after. I'm thinking this is air that's been trapped in the bowel due to bloating, which is a common symptom of the menstrual period.

I can't believe how many people have posted about these symptoms, have seen doctors, and not one person has been told about what is likely going on!!?? If endometriosis is not likely or has been ruled out, chances are good that there are a lot of retroverted or "tipped" uterus's (uteri) to blame! While it is considered " normal", it can cause problems. Think about it: if your uterus tips back, the top or fundus is pointed directly at your rectum, and in some cases, it squishes it, making it extremely painful to go poo, to use tampons, to have sex, and in my case, even to sit! During your period, your uterus is much heavier because of the built up lining, and the pressure against the rectum much more intense. Google "retroverted uterus", and talk to your doctors!!!

We are not alone :-)

I have noticed the same thing! I used to exercise and my period were getting much better. Now I am so busy but still have to talk with my 5 year old about mommy needing her gym time. So, if I don't exercise I am also in trouble.

Oh my gosh I can't believe other people go through this. I'm so glad I found this. I seriously thought I was the only one in the world. I have been dealing with this pain for 6 years now. It started my senior year of high school. Later that year my first semester in college I got excruciating pain in my right abdomen and went to the ER. They thought it was appendicitis, but did a scan and told me I have cysts on my ovaries and that one ruptured. Since then I have seen 3 different gynos and no gyno has ever seen any cysts on my ovaries. I had been on birth control regulary this entire time. I have also gotten annual paps and never had any abnormalities. I have told the gynos about the pain (it never went away it comes and goes) and she suggested the GI doctor. So now I have my first GI appointment next month. I don't think mine is endometriosis because wouldn't they have found some sort of abnormalities by now? Every pap comes back fine, as well as every ultrasound they've done. I've seen 3 different doctors and same answer every time. Is there anything GI related that could cause this?

I am replying to the post above ^

I am 26 years old and 3 years ago I had my appendix removed after a cyst had burst on my ovaries. Turns out there was nothing wrong with my appendix. In the lead up to the burst I had the same chronic bowel movement on the first day of my period. I would wake up in agony run to the toilet and sit in pain leaning over sweating feeling so sick i put up with it until it burst. i have also suffered with IBS of years which doctors are linking the bowels to be worse around period time because of inflammation. I have had scans in the past and nothing has shown the doctor thought it might be a hernia. So anyways the pain went away for 3 years after the appendix was removed. And now on my last period that horrible sickening pain came back.

I wasn't going to ignore it again, so i went to the doctors today. The doctor explained that the next trial will be to skip the period and see the difference, if i don't have periods i don't have pain. Well hopefully! Now this wont work for everyone but if you're already on the pill what have you got to lose. I had the talk about having children in the future and the effects of coming off the pill, and doctors say the pill is one of the better forms of contraception to come off and try to conceive with no problems. So i'll give this a go and keep you all posted with the outcome.
