I know these posts are several months old but I had the same problem on my right side. It started after I had a surgery, my neck felt stiff just under the base of my skull but I had full range of motion. Then one day it felt like there was just blood being pumped at a high and intense rate of speed up my right side of neck and then the pain spread out at the base of my skull and over the top of my head, mainly on the right side. I could feel a pulsing in the back of my throat and ears. I felt like c**p. Went to Dr and he said I 'strained my neck'. NO I'm a personal trainer and that is not a pulled muscle. My blood pressure ended up being 168/106 and my pulse was 146. He gave me blood pressure meds but no diaretic.

I went a couple of weeks of still feeling bad but the intense part was better. I finally just started googling all the meds I was on and minocycline showed the exact description of the problem I was having. It was intracranial hypertension caused by taking tetracycline for a long time. You can also have this syndrome for other unknown causes. I stopped taking the meds and the next day the intense feeling was much better and they gave me a diaretic. I will follow up w/ a eye dr and MRI/MRA to make sure nothing else is going on. But what all of you have described somes like intracranial hypertension.

in december i got unbelievable tightness in my neck and throat. stress, bad posture most likely culprits. saw doc, test for thyroid, heart, lungs, the works,,, nothing. doc said i was just to tense. ok,, so i went to massage therapy, that started acupuncture and than cranial sacral massage with facial work. Worked wonders,, i can eat again, talk again, and most importantly i can smile at my kids again. I had lost 30 lbs in 5 weeks due to inability to eat. could not go outside as i could not stand to squint in the daylight. could not drive anywhere as the vibration of the vehicle would send my neck into spasm and i would come very close to passing out. It was hell, but the return trip with holistic help and perseverance has been paying off. look into trigger points, and myofascial release. when the doc cant figure it out,,,go to see and old chinese doc,,, they can! good luck

I have around about the same problem. Here are my symptoms

-cant inhale a full breath, get cut short mid way with a pain in my chest

-get the throbbing feeling in neck, hurts so bad I usually have to stop what im doing and just focus on dealing with the pain, usually so bad I scrunch up my face each time a wave hits (every second or so)...

...These waves for me seem to be caused when I move certain ways, and seem to go away if I lay still for long enough, but as soon as I go to roll over, it comes back.

-have experienced that 'toothache' pain someone else mentioned, just last night actually my teeth, particularly towards the back of my mouth were aching terribly.

-just feel 'sick'..i'm very tired, my back/neck/shoulders area feels stiff and aches, overall body weakness, muscle fatigue, hot/cold body temperatures

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

hello, apparently people are all experiencing the same thing.. in my case it feels like a pulsing sensation right below the jaw bone going down.. it feels like a vein but im not exactly sure... im pretty sure its a vein though. Regardless its still a sharp pain that comes and goes every couple of seconds or minutes even... just the other day when i realized this pain it would hurt every time i swallow anything including saliva.. now it just hurts on and off without my doing anything... its driving me nuts and im scared it may be some form of clotting or something... hope someone has some kind of idea about this

I drink and am an occasional cocaine user... My neck and throat sensations are in the muscles and thyroid area surrounding my neck... I have the feeling someone choking me very lightly, the muscles around my neck and chest area are tight and throbbing...(mostly in my neck muscles). I am not tired... Sleeping normal, eating normal and no other strange symptoms...

Just irritating and annoying more than anything? Could this be related to my alchohol and drug use?

I am also going thru a divorce... Been to the doctor, did all sorts of blood tests and physical exam... No problem says doc. Says its stress related. Was prescribed Lorazapram .5 ml... No change?

When I swallow I can feel my neck muscles in the front "Throb"... Hot Tea feels better but the symtoms have been continous for 2 months...

Any ideas?

In despair, I googled the words "diagnose my symptoms", and was AMAZED that I came to this link especially considering I have some of the same symptoms. It all began August '07, when one night out of nowhere,, I felt EXTREMELY exhausted where I couldn't move and get enough sleep. My eye lids were experiencing tremors, along with my cheeks, I thought "just a muscle spasm" By the next day, my calf muscles were so weak and trembling I could barely walk. For weeks I went to my primary doctor 2x a week, the ER (they thought I was just having a panic attack -- sure I was, because I thought I was dying from the main symptoms!), and a neurologist who couldn't explain my gait and unability to hold my eyes closed and maintain my balance. After countless tests, CT scans, Lyme, Lups, MS, Parkinson's, etc -- all negative, finally about 4 weeks later I felt better and resumed my normal activity. Oh, forgot to mention during the onset of the symptoms I was in a nightclub and my right arm went completely weak and I couldn't hold my cup. I started to panic on top of it, which exacerbated the tremors that I was having that mimmicked an axiety attack. Rushed to the ER, they just gave me a Xanax which stopped the tremors, but I tried to tell them that whatever is wrong with me Xanax is helping the TREMORS, not an anxiety disorder. Was rushed back to the ER again with NO anxiety present and still was trembling and couldn't walk -- they said probably a virus that needs to "run it's course". They tested my thyroid and said I had HYPOTHYROIDSM (would explain everything right?), next day primary ran new blood work -- thyroid was fine. I felt happy 6 weeks later when it all went away. -- until a few weeks ago. It started with 3 weeks in a row having the flu and a cold (no one around me sick), mucus build-up overnight. Then the muscles started to ache down my right arm and shooting pains down my right leg. Saturday, my husband rushed me to the hospital because my laps started feeling ice cold (new symptom) -- they chalked it up to an anxiety attack, gave me a Xanax and sent me on my way. Monday night, it was worse, now the thickening feeling in my throat (one side), pressure in my eyes, head and chest like it's going to bust open; this "yucky feeling" in my body like venom is inside of it, dizzy, spasms of the leg muscles, arm muscles, eyelids, and jaw; cold hands, lap and feet; legs keep going to sleep, and because of the spasms, frequent urination.

Cogipenny,
You said they tested and it was thyroid and then they tested again it was fine. You need to find out the test results. Request a copy. When your thyroid gland starts to fail you can have wide fluctuations in your thyroid tests, especially the TSH. You can go from euthyroid - normal function to hypothyroid to hyperthyroid in a matter of days and sometimes even hours. Everyone is different. No two people present with the same symptoms. No two people's course of treatment will be the same. You know your body. Trust it and yourself.

Anxiety is a symptom of hypothyroidism as well as the tremors, feeling ice cold, dizziness, spasm and cramps in legs and arms, spasms in the eyelids, cold hands and feet, numbness and tingling in legs, frequent urination, and much more.

If you do some searches on a search engine you can find much information about all this. Get informed and confront doctors about your condition. There are online support boards for thyroid disease.

A normal TSH for an euthyroid person is 0.5 to 2.0 with most people being around the 1 - 1.5 mark. Any test result above 3.0 is suspect of developing hypothyroidism. Many doctors will wait until a patient is well outside that, over 10 [even though the range's top number is usually 5.5], before treating. Some people are very ill by then, I was one of those people. Then there's the need to test your FREE-T3 AND FREE-T4 and Antibodies. As I said before, ask for copies of your labs.

Good luck and don't give up.

To all,
I have exactly the same throbbing in my throat as the rest of you are describing and substantial dizziness (although it feels almost more like being on some sort of narcotic).

Anyway, I am throwing in my two sense here because I have noticed a strong correlation between my symptoms and sitting in front of the computer screen. I will post more information when I can make a more thorough comparison (at the moment I have to do a lot of work on the computer).

Just for your information, I am healthy, young (31), exercise, am not under direct stress, but probably latent stress.

Will post more later! Thanks to everyone for describing their experience.

My throbbing neck and heart area pain developed three years ago. It later was diagnosed as Pericarditis which is fluid build up around my hear. This was possibly due to a virus. I was told that this rarely comes back. Well it currently setting in again with the same symptoms along with periodic flue like chills. I'm confused and concerned since it's back again. I'm being told that it's probably a virus again by my dock. My blood test shows an elevated number (C something) that indicates some sort of inflimation. The pain is getting bad enough that I'll be visiting the dock again soon. I'd love to know what is going on.

I hope you're feeling better--it sounds like we are having something very similar, if not exactly the same. I have been getting these sharp pulsing sensations that come and go at random on either side of my neck. I can't pinpoint any specific trigger or activity. My carotids checked out fine, as did my heart and bloodwork. I've been alternating between worrying about it and telling myself if it hasn't killed me by now (it's been a year), it probably isn't too serious--I HOPE! My doctor hasn't been much help and I have a feeling she thinks I'm overreacting. It's been suggested that it could be my thyroid, although I have no other symptoms. I've also heard TMJ, stress, or a disc problem. I was worried about the clotting, too, but my doctor didn't think it would feel like that. I'm otherwise a healthy 45 year old woman, normal weight, non-smoker. It's hard not to get alarmed by these spasms, especially when no one can explain what the cause is. I could deal with it if I just knew what it was--it's not knowing that is making me crazy!

I have had similiar symptoms myself. I am being treated for Hypotyroidism. Your thyroid gland is in your neck. I definitly suggest seeing a Endocrinologist. My regular doctor was not as helpful. :D
