I had a very bad exprience with these kind of cysts.

Finally after 4 days and a whole bunch of toilet paper and pus, it seems to be over. But still its painful to sit. These past three days were prolly the worst days of my life. I couldnt sleep at nights and sometimes the pain grew so much that i started crying (good thing i live alone). But this definately the worst that could happen in acne. When i finally popped the cyst it took my 2 hours to compelety drain the pus. It was horrible! I think there is still some bacteria left so i am going to try to get that out too.

I really wish i never see anything like this again.

I am not sure if I have one or not, but it sounds like what I have. It's right at the top of my butt, and the swelling comes and goes. A few years ago I had something hard there and then it kinda disappeard, but since it went away I have a "mark" on my butt. At some times it swells to be about 2 or 3 inches long and about an inch wide. It's not terribly painful, but it's no picnic. Other times (like now), it's flat and doesn't really hurt. Lately it hasn't gotten much bigger than a dime before I "pop" it and let it drain. The drainage is usually a clear substance with blood mixed in.

Is this a Pilonidal Cyst? Can anyone tell me from that description? Any help would be appreciated!

one year ago I came here after searching 'bump at base of spine' and found what I was looking for- pilonidal cyst- you see, I had called the NHS hotline worried about a bump that my husband was convinced was a hernia and they sent me to hospital. The doctor I saw refused to check me and wouldn't let me remove my jeans- she kept saying there was nothing there and I kept telling her she couldn't see because everytime I started to open my belt she told me not to. I got home in pain and in tears and found this site. The next day I saw a doctor at my GP who said she didnt think it was a pilonidal cyst but gave me antibiotics. within 2 days I couldn't sit, lie, walk or sleep and I saw another doctor at my GP who confirmed it was a pilonidal cyst and gave me the correct medication (antibiotics but stronger). This doctor was very patient, called me back every few days to check it was healing properly and suggested I wait to see if it returns before doing surgery (removing the skin on the area so it grows back on it's own without hair). Recovery time for this is long and it is very painful so he didn't want to do it if it wasn't necessary. After 2 weeks the cyst was goneand I hardly had any pain since then unless I leaned against a surface on the exact spot.

Last week (exactly a year later) the pain and bump came back. I am going to see the doctor tomorrow to discuss the surgery.

I know it's embarrasing but get it checked out- it can get infected and the doctor said it could harm the kidneys if not treated right.

I've actually had these a couple times, I actually have on right now and it is very uncomfortable, I actually have some cream that was used to get rid of one on my back and it really does work wonders. I recommend going to see your family physician ASAP and getting some of this cream, it's relatively new to the market but does work wonders with no painful surgery required.

I have one and just talked to a doctor, because of the fact that mine continue to reoccur, he is saying that it is a glandular issue and he would like to remove the problematic gland. I had thoughgt that they were abcsesses, and it goes to show that only a doctor can tell you whats needed. definently make an appt. to find out whats going on and in the meantime antinflammatories are always helpful with swelling pain and fever.(ibeprofen, naproxen, acetemiphen)

Did the doctor happen to mention what the gland was that was acting up? I would like to hear if you have an answer about it because I'm very curious. Thank you!

I've been dealing with the same problem for about 3 years. I have the curse of being hairy and having folliculitis. I've been seeing a surgeon for the past year and had surgery to remove the cyst in Dec 09. The cyst has came back a couple of days ago and went to see him yesterday. He gave me Augmentin for the next week and have an appointment with him next week. My cyst continues to move from the edge of my butt to my genitals. I asked him about using heat for the swelling and he said the heat will cause the bacteria to grow and will try to draw it to the surface. My cyst have been deep under the skin. I have to push all the bloody liquid out to ease the pain. In the past i've had the cyst lanced and would pack it twice a day with gauze; this has worked well in healing the cyst, but once the cyst has healed to the dead skin it stops healing. Has anyone had this problem? If so has anyone consulted with a plastic surgeon? Has anyone had any success with herbal remedies or creams to help clean the area?

i get the same thing, skin only heals up to the dead skin, and i have these weird holes in my skin. if you find anything else out about it, i'd love to know.. i'm still too chicken to go to the doctor :(

I am a 28 year old female. I just had the surgery to have a pilonidal cyst taken care of for good. I was nervous because I had heard the recovery time was long. I am on day 5 and they think I should be back to work in 5 more days, so anywhere from 10 days to 2 weeks. It is not pleasant, but excited to be done with it for good. Good luck to you all!

I am so scared. Have been experiencing these same type cysts. 3 since January. The pain is excruciating. I always fear the worst, and my issue is that I am scared of doctors too! But I am hoping that all will be okay when I go. I can't believe how many people have this problem. I wish you all well.

when i was 12 I had one on the inside of one of my cheeks. it started out like a small bump then got really big to the point it hurt to move my lower parts at all. so i went to the doctor and they removed it they said for some ppl its genetic and will get them over and over and for some it will happen once in their life. It was painful. first they had to numb it with a big ass needle. then they went it and dug it out with a Q tip like thing. I was screaming like i was dying. afterwards i was numb but i had to get help wrapping it which was embarrasing. It went away and healed completely but now it might be back. I got put the shower and sure enough theres a small bump in almost the exact spot. Its been ten years since I had one. Hopefully it will go away on its own I'm gonna try the heat tip.

Hi. I have one on my butt, and i keep thinking maybe because i'm not as active as I used to be. I sit down a lot of the time. This is like the third or fourth cyst i've had on my butt. I also got one on my thigh once and it left a painless lump. What's up with that? The cysts and all. I never got them before.

my husband has them too they are very painful it feels like ur tailbone is badly burised if its hurting then you have to go to the doc its a small surgry they lance it open and drain the fluid and pack it witth an anitbiotic. if it is hurting then that means that it is puting stress on the tailbone and it could be inflamed. i would deff go to the doc and have it checked out.
