I recently had mine surgically removed by a cosmetic surgeon but as happy as I am now, it's not a decision I'd take lightly. I first noticed them when I hit puberty and while some were completely normal appearance in that they were small bumps (if you type montgomery glands into google images, you'll find loads of pics), I also had a fair number that were unusually large (some stuck out as much as the actually nipple) and as a result, I couldn't wear a normal swimming suit growing up as the lumps were noticeable through it and ive always had to wear padded bras and have been horribly self conscious infront of boyfriends. I started thinking about surgery a few years ago but found very little information on line which is why I'm writing on this now, I met with two different cosmetic surgeons who spoke to me in great length about the results ie scarring and after careful consideration, i decided to go ahead. My surgery lasted about 45 minutes and I was awake throughout although the anaesthetic meant I felt nothing, I'm now at the healing stage. I will be left with small whitish scars where each incision was made but because i am very fair skinned, my areola are fairly pale too so the scars won't be as noticeable compared to someone with darker skin. Once I am completely healed (approx 6 months after op), I do have the option of getting the areola area tattooed which is a very common procedure carried out mainly in woman who have reconstructive surgery after breast cancer and is affective in covering scars although it often needs to be touched roughly ever two years. I am not recommending that people should go for the surgery but I wanted to add to this discussion because I remember shedding many tears as a self conscious teenager when I couldn't find any advice helpful to me online. It certainly wasn't a decision I rushed into though, Im 27 and have had enlarged glands since the age of 12 or 13. Montgomery glands are completely 100% normal though, mine were just unusually large.

I'm glad I found this thread! I was worried about the "white heads" on my nipples and areola, I thought I had some sort of persistent acne! Good to know they're just normal glands and not cysts!

However, I have noticed that these glands sometimes express clear or slightly foggy fluid when I do lump checks. Is this normal as well?

Yes, others have stated they are perfectly normal representing a natural source of lubricant and they are called Glands of Montgomery. I have also seen others, extremely self-conscious about them who were trying to pop'em or use various creams and steroid injections. I know Hollywood sets a high bar for both men and women, but please love your body a little more than mutilating it for no healthy reason. I noticed mine 2-3 weeks ago in the shower and although I am one to pop pimples on my face every once in a while, whenever it comes to a sensitive zone I don't push it to any ends. Although I was kind of embracing my new nipple look, I used coconut oil on and off on the pimple as I use coconut as a daily moisturizer for the body. I applied coconut oil for the first 3-4 nights because it was also a little red/bloody looking, it was not just white, hoping it would cure the redness. And it did. After I just used it whenever I remembered. It also dried the "pimple" and it is almost invisible now. You can just google a few of the uses for coconut oil. (There are only about 122 uses for this amazing product). Anyway, if you want to try it, show some love to your boobs and moisturize them with something your body would easily and happily absorb. Peace.

I have bad acne. I get break outs on my face, neck, arms (which now have white scars, so my pigmentation is all effed up), all over my back and all over my chest. The sad part is i think it is spreading over time (shouldn't it be the opposite?)  Anyways, i've had these bumps on my nipples, the look like pimples as you ladies describe, i've been getting more over the years, No i've never been pregnant and yes i'm passed puberty ( i'm 22).. i can pop them and white puss comes out, hence why i never doubted they were pimples until now. But i have acne on my chest, i get black heads everywhere, and sometimes pimples or zits. I'm sure it is possible to have acne on nipples? or are they ALWAYS Montgomery's Tubercles? Mine do not look like white heads, but you guys have already described, they do not go away.. and i'm HUGELY self conscious about them. Who wants to tell a guy they have pimples on their nipples? Nobody. :(

SO glad I saw this post.  My mom is a nurse & told me a while ago they were normal, but I still got worried every time my Dr. would ask about nipple discharge.  I KNEW it wasn't what she meant, but still BC is scary thought.  What I'm really happy to know is that I shouldn't "pop" them b/c it makes it worse.  I sometimes do after a shower b/c they look really bad & I thought it would help.  Now I know I've just been making them worse! Thanks all!

Small question tho, cause I too have had this too and I am sometimes a little weird with skin and pimples, I can't help but pop them (I don't know why), so I am only now finding out what they are, but it's a bit oo late. I have been popping them often, a little white pus comes out like from a normal pimple. However on one of those bumps, more came out and I tried to pop it all out to clean it out or whatever and now the spot sound there is a little harder. Feels like there is a little ball in there of hard pus that I can't pop out. So I'm guessing I may have infected them already, at least this one. And of course I will try to never touch them again, but what do you think, is it infected and could it even lead to something worse and more serious? Also, is there something I can do now to .. you know, fix it? :D

Never squeeze them as they can cause infection. The infection spreads very quickly in breast tissues. Get a dermatologists opinion about this.

I have always had the same thing, I think, but it seems rather than white heads, under the surface of the nipple I have little pockets of whiteish stuff. I always have tried squeezing the stuff out but most of the time not much comes out. But a few weeks ago there was one that was kind of protruding a bit more than the others, so I squeezed it, and a ton of white puss came out. It freaked me out so much, and I kept squeezing it and more and more just kept coming until I finally emptied it. I have no idea what this was about, but all I know is it's extremely embarrassing. Please, has anyone else had this experience? I'm 17 and have never been pregnant or anything.

Wow so glad you posted this.. ! I'm also 27 and have also had enlarged montgomery glands since my early teens. I have a problem with picking at my skin and have struggled over the years not to touch them. As a result.. I made them bigger and now have some that are almost as big as my nipple too. Soo incredibly embarrassing. It has nearly ruined my sex life. I have 10 total I would need removed and I'm at the point where I am 100% ready to be rid of this dilemma once and for all. How much did this procedure cost you? Did they charge you per gland? I have no idea what this would cost and hope I can afford it. Thank you so much for sharing.
