actually. ive read a lot about this as i suffered through this terrible infection... one of the effects of post scabies is that it can further intensify underlying skin problems. for instance, i'd had eczema prior to contracting scabies but had barely noticed since i only suffered very mild symptoms a few times. i'd never been able to pin point the eczema until after the scabies traumatized my skin and had intensified my eczema.

This made me feel so much better.  i had the mites for a almost a year before i finally went to different doctors. used 6 tubes of permethrin cream. and a dose of ivermectin. the doctor said she didnt see them anymore when she did the scraping. im so glad i can finally read something about the after effects. i get so nervous when my skin looks irritated for about 30 min or longer. but im not itching like when i first got it. scabies ruined a relationship for me. i cant wait for the day when i can put it all behind me. good luck to anyone who has it. i really do have a lot of compassion for anyone who has to deal with this.

Wow! I thought I was the only one being driven insane by this horrible itching and scarring. My poor legs look as though I've laid in fire ant beds and let them attack me only to scratch all of my skin off. It's been over 100 degrees all summer where I live and I've had to wear pants every single day. The doctor prescribed medicine helps, but not enough! I've used tea tree oil, cortisone cream and many more. Does anyone know what to do about the scars once this torture is over? Thank you so much!

You've described exactly what I've been going through. I out grew childhood eczema and the scabies brought it back with a vengeance. Has anything you've done worked? I seem to know more about this than my dermatologist does.

Is their anything to apply to the nodules to make them disappear? Also were you embarrassed to have sex because of the bumps on the shaft?

Hello Scabies Patient!

You are exactly correct. Post scabies syndrome is often (99%) the issue and NOT re infestation. Permethrin no only kills the mite but also many important skin functions. By adding a second treatment of Permethrin you are going to be in a world of hurt about 4 weeks later. If your itching is local and you have red-localized spots at the itch site, you have PSS. Keep the skin from getting damaged by scratching and in about half a year you will feel euphoric...

This helped me out so much! I thank you so much sir. It hasn't really been this long but I also have post scabies. I have 5 or 6 red bumps on the head of my penis and they don't itch. I've treated for scabies 2 times. It doesn't bother me but the bumps are still there. I hope it all just go away after time!

Something I have found extremely helpful is to take cooler showers. Before I received treatment for scabies, showering was my least favorite part of the day. After showering the bumps were at least 10x more obvious and itchier. Once I started taking cooler showers, the itchiness reduced by about half after showers. Allthough this is not a treatment for scabies, it's just a little tip to help make this torturing experience a bit more helpful.

I've also had problems with post scabies markbumps recurring.  It has been 7 months, and it is getting better and I am hopeful that I'm in the home stretch, although I thought that a couple of times before and then the same bumps would somehow get agitated again and swell up and itch.  During this ordeal I started suspecting that food intolerances were compounding the problem, so I followed an eczema diet and stopped drinking coffee.  It seems like that helped.  Also, most of my problem bites/bumps were on my butt, so sitting caused issues, because of rubbing and could start flare ups all over again.  I would definitely think it would be worse to get bumps on mr happy because naturally it will be hard not to rub him for several months.  Just hang in there though, it will slowly get better.

Thanks so much for this post. It is hard to find information out there about post scabies. It seems like all medical journals say it can last several weeks after successful treatment. I had scabies undiagnosed for about 3 months. Finally saw a dermatologist, was diagnosed and treated with two rounds of oral ivermectin. I was staying at my parents' house and confined to one room during that time frame. After treatment I returned to my home which had been void of humans for at least a month. (I was on an extended leave). My doctor told me not to worry about my house being infected if no one had been in it, since the mite cannot live for longer than 3 days without a human host. Also luckily I did not have carpets or a lot of furniture. Neverthless, I washed all my bedding, put whatever I couldn't wash in the dryer for 45 min on high, left most of my clothing in garbage sacks in a separate room for weeks, sprayed all my daily work clothes with permethrin (I work in the outdoors and do this to avoid ticks). I still found myself itching like crazy. However, it wasn't as bad at night, I was able to sleep, and I hadn't had any new bumps for 1 month and I decided to ease up on my daily cleaning of everything and quarantined lifestyle. I didn't even sit on my couch. After all that cleaning and 3 rounds of ivermectin (the pharmacy screwed up and gave me more than the doctor prescribed so I took the 3rd dose a week after the 2nd dose), permethrin spray, clove, been and tea tree oils, 2 months of no new spots, mind you my existing spots were still there....they would come and go, I noticed new spots. I was so frustrated I took a scalding hot bleach bath and sprayed myself with permethrin (which I don't recommend doing either one of those). Things got worse. I ended up going back to a dermatologist (I live in an isolated area and the closest dermatologist is 3 hrs away) and I tested negative for scabies. They did a second biopsy and said it was an "anthropod bite." Well these damn "anthropod bites" have been in the same spot on my skin for a total of 8 months, 4 of which were after successful treatment. The bumps itch and will almost go away completely, only to flare up again. The doc says it is not active scabies. Sounds like this can happen...that post scabies can last months. Seems like mine sure is. Hope this helps someone.

In continuation....I also am not sure where or how I got the scabies. I don't know anyone who had it or was itching. My best guess is I was traveling for work a lot and staying in hotels. Nice hotels too. But goes to show even nice hotels can have it. And since they cannot be seen with the naked eye, they go undetected and often unreported. Also I did have my dog checked for fleas, mites, ring worm, everything just to rule out. And checked my home for bed bugs. Everything was clear.
